I personally use guitar strings as cymbal rivets. They work pretty well.

I know this is a year old already, but here's a tip for CHEAP cymbal sleeves you might be able to use in the future: Air hose. The small clear plastic stuff usually used for aquarium air lines works great, and it is dirt cheap. You can keep a foot of it in your stick bag or if you have hardware cases, and you cut it with a knife or scissors (usually have a utility knife in the tool kit for gigs). It is simple to cut to any size you need, and you can get larger diameters depending on your hardware. It lasts a good long time before it gets brittle or cut through by the cymbal edge plus it is quite soft on the cymbals themselves. You can get it any place that has a pet section like a WalMart or a pet store, some hardware stores sell it like Home Despot or Lowses, and I've even seen it the Dollar Store before. Usually no more than $2, but often less.

I put dryer sheets in my bass drums so they don't smell musty in the basement. The heat gun trick works great for when a kid gets stabby and dimples the head. Drinking straws for cymbal sleeves don't last long but they'll work okay for the snare strap. Once used two quarters under the screw that clamps the bass pedal to the drum because the rim was too thin for the clamp.

I did a little experiment on my old drumhead where back in the day I used drumsticks with colored tips and the drumhead was so dirty and I wanted to use that again. So I cleaned my drumhead with water mixed with baking soda and it worked.

I know this is an old video, but when I first started playing, I had need for new heads and no money. I took some round cookie sheets, put the heads on them and put them in the oven. That tightened them right up and they worked a while longer.

pen grip cymbal sleeve works well. I'm using it on my ride, and crash ride. and I also don't use felts on the cymbal tops. I think it let's the cymbals breathe better. and ironically I was already using the bottle cap for the cymbal. I love the tips. they help a lot. subscribed. keep the tips coming.

As for the hack around 3:45, if you ever need something to hold you snares on, take an old head, cut out a strip of it and use it just like the original snare holders. Better than shoelaces, and I'd trust my two-ply drum head better than a straw

i have had 3 cymbal companies all tell me the same thing. a tight cymbal is a reliable cymbal. having it tight on top with felt so its not flopping around prevents cracks in the middle at the bell. to tight causes cracks at the edge. a ride being nice and tight is a good thing with felt it shouldnt really dampen sound much. if anything help it be cleaner.

Much better "rivetted ride cymbal" hack just hang any metal necklace/chain from the center post across the surface of the cymbal, i prefer using those round ball type chains that hold dog tags, but you can buy them cheap at any hardware store as a bulb light chain extension(same exact thing) just put a loop on one end, size it to fit, then hang that lil rascal on there, sounds better than rivets and is cheap, easy, and lightning fast to put on and off. ive even done it mid song for just the bridge.

David: I watched a video with Small Faces Drummer Kenny Jones playing live, this would have been filmed around `1965 and on his Ride Cymbal instead of Rivets he had a "small" diameter light fixture pull chain, It was a longer chain hanging down on the cymbal from the post of his cymbal stand. It was the kind of light fixture chain that looks like small round beads but they are metal and if you have 2 separate chains they can click into each other to make one longer chain. , They sounded pretty good.

I've tried heat guns on drum heads... and talked to a veteran drum builder about it..... hey says that it's not good for rejuvenating a whole head, since the tension won't be even anymore. BUT using a small focused heat source to take a ding out of a head is ok.

hey david I have a new hack I have yet seen done I came up with it myself. not sure if anyone else had a video of it but it's a bass drum dampening trick I have 2 versions of the technique. first one on my old kit I took double sided sticky tape (I know bad choice) stuck soft foam on sticky tape and then stick tape and foam inside of drum head bout half inch from edge all the way around the head.. second one 2x5 inch peace of thicker foam just 2 peaces one at top other at bottom duct taped to inside of both heads about an inch from edge of head

@rdavidr
@rdavidr 9 жыл бұрын
Oliver Reichenbach They cut down the reflection quite a bit. That room is pretty shallow to the right of the kit (when facing it) so there is a lot of room flutter. Ive always been skeptical when it comes to acoustic foam, but I got a pretty good deal on them and they seem to be doing the trick. Im sure you already know this, but acoustic foam is for controlling sound reflections, not sound proofing.

Hey man i recently joined your channel, i dig it a lot, love the drum hacks, is something I do a lot too, just for fun why don't you expand a little on this and present sort of more creative drum hacks, like stacking cymbals or using pans, for example I use the "old drumhead" a lot for the the "deep snare sound". Some pleople even use "scrap metal" for different textures. I dont know, I think you can pull it off. Again, thanks for the hacks, I enjoy the editing too! :)
