Very good and most importantly an honest review. To many channels only mention the good because they got the machine for free. You deserve more subscribers than you have that's for sure.

The pain points you brought up were nice, though I never see any reviews include going in depth about the level of precision the engravers can obtain. As someone who does 30mm and smaller engravings, it would be a great help to show the capabilities when it comes to engraving text/images at small sizes, so that we get a good idea of not only cutting power, but the level of detail laser engravers are capable of.

Hello, thanks for sharing a great review. One thing I'm wondering is if the stepper motors in the earlier models are capable of the greater speeds made possible by the E80? I have an older Neje 3s Max (without the drag chains etc) with an A40640. It won't go over 1000mm/m. I don't know if the limit is in the firmware etc, or what. I'd be more than happy to just upgrade the laser head (don't need Z axis control)...but there's not a lot of point if I'm limited to the same speeds.

not sure if this will help but if you install laser grbl( github.com/arkypita/LaserGRBL ) and connect to your laser then go to grbl config it should read the config from your laser and you should be able to see what the x and y maximum rate is for your laser and you might be able to adjust the values to allow faster movement. here is an image of the default config from the max 4, the only thing i have changed is the "y axis maximum travel" because i have installed the frame extension, it would normally be 460 but i changed it to 1030. i.ibb.co/CBC1RWx/grbl.jpg the max 4 defaults have the "x-axis maximum rate" at 24000 mm/min and the "y-axis maximum rate" at 15000 mm/min

The honeycomb was too small to fit, but am I incorrect in that you removed the aluminum spacers on your rails to allow better screw depths? Wouldn’t have this modification reduced the inside footprint?
@DnG-Crafts
@DnG-Crafts 8 ай бұрын
no those parts are not spacers they are for the belt tension and they are attached to the outside of the frame. the internal diameter of the frame does not change, you could add spacers but then the rails wont sit in the keyed slots which could allow them to twist/move and cause the laser to be less accurate. the honeycomb panel was designed for the max3 but neje was also using/selling it for the max4. i ended up buying the extension rails and building a bed to sit in the frame

G'day, appreciate the no-BS review for once. There's not a lot of info about the Max 4 and E80 around yet. One thing I'm wondering about, in the description they tout the Max 4's "vertical cutting" ability (ie standing it up nearly vertical on its front edge like an easel.) Seems like it could be a huge space saver with the extension kit on there but I'm dubious about those steppers being up to it. I don't suppose you've tried it, or have any thoughts on how well it might work? Cheers.
@DnG-Crafts
@DnG-Crafts Жыл бұрын
i have not tried it but it does have dual y axis steppers and the gantry is fairly light so i think the steppers would be able to drive it in a vertical position. i think belt slipping could be an issue if it was too heavy and if it skips a tooth mid cut it would throw the whole piece out of alignment so belt tension will be important in that configuration. the steppers on the neje max 4 have no markings but they are 42-34 nema 17 and the gantry with the e80 and my cable chain mod weighs exactly 4kg, maybe with that info you might be able to workout if the two steppers combined can handle the 4kg load. this is the closest match i could find circuit.rocks/stepper-nema-17-bipolar-motor-42-x-42-x-34-mm
@latonc
@latonc Жыл бұрын
@@DnG-Crafts Oh, thanks for the extra info, that's super helpful! I did a few dubious calculations based on Creality's 42-34 and guessing a pulley diameter of 14mm, and really roughly comparing to the torque curves of other stepper motors, these two motors should be able to lift about 5.5kg at peak torque and fall to 4kg at around 20k mm/min best case scenario. Neje recommends a max processing speed of 400mm/sec which is probably just fine. I'm looking to pick this unit up in the not too distant future so I'll know for sure soon. Cheers

Mine came with a cable chain
@DnG-Crafts
@DnG-Crafts 2 ай бұрын
The first units released a year ago had no back bar or chain, they had a silly bit of plastic to hold the cable up in the air. Neje took the advice about chain modification and implemented it onto the max4 frame which is good because the original way they had designed it could have had the cable caught in the toolhead damaging things. It is good they they listened to community feedback and made changes.

Hi, Nice review, very useful. One question though, can the laser focus below the frame? Meaning can you sit the whole thing on a larger board and cut or engrave the board? I'm just wondering if it is possible to work on oversize projects this way.
@DnG-Crafts
@DnG-Crafts 11 ай бұрын
yes you would be able to place the frame on a board and cut/engrave it. the z axis has a fair bit of room to work with and the e80 laser modules focal point is 25mm from the bottom of the module.

i ended up just buying the chain because it was only around $10 per meter for a 10x20 chain. i have the e40 on my neje max 3 and the e40 has been a good laser, i have cut a fair bit with it and it is pretty decent. the e40 is easy to focus because the focal point is 5mm from the bottom of the laser housing so i just cut a few bits of material to act as thickness gauges 5mm, 3mm, 2mm and just place the gauge on the top of the piece i am working on and drop the laser on to it and its done.

@@DnG-Crafts Wow! Quick response, and helpful! I currently have a Snapmaker A350 2.0 that is very well built imo. But, my "shop" is smallish and I'll probably never use the CNC mill capability. It takes some time & effort (OK, not that much) to change from 3D printing to the laser. I actually dusted of my old Monoprice Select and leave it set up to make small parts as needed. I'm looking at possibly a delta style 3D printer with a non-moving Y axis build plate, and now the Max 4 for my laser work - again the non moving build area is attractive. There is a trade off for 3 in 1 machines, but I learned a lot with Snappy and had a lot of hobby fun. Thank you again sir!!!

Thanks mate for the thorough review, I was quite impressed by the new laser ability to engrave different colours on stainless steel. Do you think the old A40640 can do it too? Does it work on other metals such as aluminium or brass?

I have been wanting to try some other metals but i have not around to trying them. Before i had the e80 i tried stainless with the e40 which is a 10w laser and it worked. the e40 is the same power as the a40640 so i cant see why it would not do it.

This one is simple, the metal changes color during the heating process. Any kind of laser can do it. Compared with A40640 and E40 laser, I will prefer E40. This is a very good module. I think it is better for engraving stainless steel.

@DnG-Crafts

it depends what material you are working with but yes you are essentially burning the material to cut or engrave it so it will produce smoke and smells. wood and cardboard are not too bad its the plastic and synthetic types of materials that smell pretty bad and can be toxic to inhale it is best to have the laser in an enclosure with some form of extractor fan to the outside of your work area. i ended up building this for the neje 4 after my frame extension arrived. kzfaq.infoT-_PlwGcQqY

Hi mate, great review, my main interest is because i have the max 3 with the 40640 12w?? module and really pleased with it, after watching your video i think the max 3 chassis is far better than the max4 from the design point. My question is this, you have both the Max 3 and the E80 module, in your opinion if I purchased the E80 is it a straight fit to my max 3. According to Neje it is but i'm always a bit wary, it comes with a new 24v power supply etc. I cannot find any info anywhere from someone who has actually upgrade the Max 3 with the E80 so thought any advice you can give me would help. Also I notice on the E80 there is a second 2pin cable to the module, my A40640 has the 2 pin connection but not used, I have not so far found any reference for what it is for, any info on this? I'm mainly into cutting plywood and MDF upto 6mm, occasionally perspex. My thought is the E80 would allow thicker material and or speed up the process considerably. Any comments greatly appreciated, from an old boy in the UK.

the reason i got the max 4 was for the motorized z axis as it allows lightburn to drop the focal point of the laser each pass which does help with cutting thicker material. i do like that the 4 has the linear rail system too but overall i think both the 3 and 4 are fine. with the e80 and the max 3 from what i have read it will work with the max 3 if your mainboard on the max 3 is v1.1.0 or above to support 24v. something else that i have read was that the air assist on the side of the e80 hits the max 3 frame. this facebook group might help answer some of your questions as it has a few people using the max 3 and e80 facebook.com/groups/662566638925122

one thing i cant find anywhere is that neje keeps boasting that the focal dot of the e80 is .06mm x .06mm which is amazingly small, ive only seen one other company top that and it was with a 6 watt laser. do you think you could do a dpi test with it and really see how true this is? if it truly is that small of a dot it should be able to hit around 400 dpi which would give impressive detail over most competitors.
@DnG-Crafts
@DnG-Crafts 11 ай бұрын
i will try and find something to do a dpi test but looking at the dot of the e80 on a board at 25mm it is rather large compared to the e40 so i am not sure how the result will be.
@timlovegren2886
@timlovegren2886 11 ай бұрын
@@DnG-Crafts honestly that's kind of what i suspected, their website was claiming a tiny dot at .06mm x .06mm and then i heard them say .1mm x .1mm in another video so I'm curious what its true size is, i suspect its really something like .15 x .15mm like most of the rest of the multi-diode units that are out there. it makes a huge difference in high detail picture engraving. it would be nice to find a high power multi-diode cutter that has that fine precision but that would be the golden apple wouldn't it. at any rate it would still be good to know what it actually is. thank you

My solution with the honycomb is to push it to the front all the way, ( the E80 touched the edge of the honeycomb at the front) and put a 5 mm layer under the back edge, because you cannot reach the first 9.5 centimeter of the MAX 4. So bad design, but in this case a solution for the honeycomb. BTW my honeycomb came with an aluminium sheet for the back. Stealing your slution with the dragchains, already ordered toghether with the MAX 4 as advised on the site , but gues what ? To way short. Just as the airslot, you need to widen the holes for the screws on the bracket. The E80 module is 600 gram the bolts the Z-axis are hand tightend after one hour burning they loosen and, in my case the E 80 dropped and damaged my new honeycomb....bummer. Best solution i think is replace with Phillpis screws or something else. By hand is not good enough. And all the rest of the problems you mentioned i had also. So thanks for the info. BTW i'm very impresse with the E80 module, but i came from the A 30 :-). So i sould be!

Hi. Have you lovered the module with every pass while cutting?
@DnG-Crafts
@DnG-Crafts Жыл бұрын
it depends on what you are cutting but for most cuts that require more than 1 pass you lower the z axis by a certain amount to keep the focus point of the laser on the layer you are cutting through. you set it in lightburn to enable the z axis and then the amount in millimeters to lower the module on each pass.
