I tested two vintage cookie presses, The Mirro Aluminum Company Cookie Press and the Wear-ever cooky press. I did have some trouble in the beginning, but eventually, I figured out how to make these work.

Thank you for your video! I just picked up a vintage Mirro press at an antique store. Haven't tried it yet. I was having difficulty taking out the disk. I guess it was stuck from being in that position for so long. I used a sharp tool to give it a twirl and was successful in removing it. I could see it had a space to rotate and lift, but appreciated your going over that point. Thank you again.

I have my mom’s Mirro press and remember using it every Christmas. It will be getting used this weekend as a matter of fact!

I have one. It was given to us for a wedding gift almost 50 years ago. It still works. (Things were made much better then) My mother had one and used it for special occasions. My Grandmother had one but her arthritis made it difficult to use. We bought her an electric one. Once she mastered it the cookies were perfect. She was an excellent cook and made things from every ethnic culture. I remember she had a black oil stove and could bake cakes and cookies in it. How, I don't know. For her birthday one year my father and uncles bought her a gas stove and a gas hot water heater. No more smell of the coal oil. In case you thought she was in the boondocks somewhere she wasn't. She was in Brooklyn New York. The building she lived was built in the 19th century and used to have an outhouse for the six families. Bathrooms were created in the apartments but only had a bathtub and a toilet bowl. You had to do everything else in the kitchen sink. Looking back it seems so primitive. It was the 1950s.

Very good information about locking the disc in and knowing there is a top and bottom of the Mirror press. I still have my mothers. In her instructions book it says something about the disc being loaded with the “ number” on it a certain way. ( up or down) 🌷

The instructions say- Select plate and insert in cap, numbered side up ( towards the press handle- yes- or touching the dough- it shows a photo) with flat spots clearing the notches. Then turn plate slightly so notches hold it. Then it says in all capitals - Do Not Force Over Notches. 🙂

I have a mirro I got from the goodwill for $2.99 I had no idea how to use it but it looked like it was never used and it came in a bag with some cookie cutters. I love vintage things and couldn't beat that price, though I haven't used them but I will now lol...thanks

Currently eyeing the Mirro one as someone is selling one that has never been used nor opened; it is a set that also comes with a decorator gun. The thing is, its $60 so not sure I want to make the leap yet even though its an unused vintage item. Thanks for showing the differences between these two models.

Does either of the instructions tell you to insert the disk certain way? Like the stamped number to the outside?

I have several Mirro Cooky Presses (yes, Mirro spelled it cooky on boxes for older presses) that my sister kept on picking up at estate sales and eBay. I'm guessing that they range in years from the 1950's through the 1970's. Some have handles, some don't. A few came with a wooden "shelf" for the plates and some came with a Mirro Cake Decorator. I also have a Mirro Dial-a-cookie press that has 3 rings that you can rotate to choose a pattern. My pride and joy, though, is my grandma's Mirro Cooky Press. Its patent was applied for by ALUMINUM GOODS Manufacturing Co in 1935 and granted in 1936. It looks a little different than any others that I've seen on eBay or anywhere else. It's also heavier. It has a screw-on base, but the little feet are on another ring that clips onto the base. I've seen those before, but the plunger on the one is what is unique. It operates the same, but the black top of the big bolt is flat and perfectly round, and is knurled on the outside. The way the screw cap is mounted is different, too, and fortunately that part of the design was improved on later, because the cap broke off of the screw of grandma's press and it was glued back on. Lesson learned! If your dough is too dry, either add something to it that will make it slide easier or start from scratch. Dry dough is why the handles break off, too.

Thank you so much for posting this. I have decided I am a cookie press nerd! I am currently hunting a SAWA (and I live in Denmark). I have ordered one on E-bay, but they won't confirm my purchase! Anyway, I have a similar Mirro cookie press, but mine has brass on the ends. My sister bought it at a garage sale, perhaps in 1999 for a dollar at a garage sale. I have no paperwork with it, but it came with 13 discs (dies) but 2 are pinwheels, and 2 Christmas trees that are a bit different from each other, though they both have the number 21 on one side. The one that was loaded in the machine (one of the pinwheels) was placed number side facing down when pressing cookies. Pinwheels are number 30. I have not actually used it for baking for many years. I have since purchased a stainless steel modern "Function" press, which doesn't work very well (but I think I can fix it) but I would highly recommend the Marcato press, made from Italy that comes with a 10 year guarentee. They are still being produced. It's absolutely a quality product. It's dies are basically the same you would find with your Zawa. I added ½ a tsp baking powder to my second batch (as I did a test between the function and Marcato) and preferred the height they gave to the cookie. Without it, they become quite flat. I want to try the mirro also, but, one batch makes almost 70 cookies.... so you can't just start making batch after batch. However, they really would make nice sandwich cookies, as they are small but basically the same size etc. I very much enjoyed your video. I am looking for Spring type dies now and the mirro has the best butterfly. Your words on alluminum shavings concerns me somewhat.
