I think what Whitebeard meant about Ace rushing things is different from Luffy. Like, Ace was too eager just to prove himself to the world, just looking for strong people to beat up. Luffy's main purpose is the adventure to become the most free man in the world, aka the King of Pirates. He beats up the people who mess with him or his friends, but he doesn't go looking for enemies.

The problem with Luffy's pirate career is that half his accomplishments didn't make the papers. Enies Lobby and Sabaody are the only two bits that did. And even with Enies Lobby, it's not the Lucci fight that got in, but the fact that they "burned down the island".

So far as we know he's just a very large Human, there is nothing contradicting that even in the most recent SBS and manga. And I feel like it would be reductive for what he stood for and for the man himself if Whitebeard happened to be part Giant. I wouldn't be mad at it but it wouldn't be fitting of The Strongest Man, especially with how Oda writes his story

@@alexjfranco I'm not. I'm not caught up with the manga, so I'm asking if his lineage was discovered. Last I heard, Newgate's from a poor nation, with no way to properly track his lineage. Given Oda's tendency to leave certain ideas open-ended with the intent to revisit it later, I'm typically of the mind that anything not explicitly stated might be intentionally left vague for future reference, like how Kaido and Oars are revealed to be distant relatives by way of a giant "oni" subspecies, effectively linking all non-fishmen horned beings by common ancestry.

Because I get the feeling that they became suspicious when he started to make a name for himself as a young pirate - in a 'I've only seen one other pirate with that kind of skill'. And then rechecked their records of all the pregnant women and young mothers on that island in the South Blue, and noticed there was a record of a woman with the surname Portgas who was listed as having lived on that Ireland but was not on their list of mothers and pregnant women. I guess that's another reason why Garp wanted Ace to become a Marine - he'd have some protection here. They wouldn't look for the son of the Pirate king in the Marines. And if he made a good record there, then if they did find out they wouldn't want to admit that they let Gold Rogers son into their ranks, so they'd keep it quiet.

Well _technically,_ "hige" is just the spoken word for "facial hair." There's no specific spoken word for "beard" in Japanese, nor "mustache," for that matter.

In therms of power, the 1st 2nd and 3rd are basically ranks of power within the group, with the captain being the top. In Using the Mugiwaras as an example, Luffy is the Top, 1st Zoro, 2nd Sanji 3rd we can argue between Robin with her broken fruit or Frank who is the ultimate Tank.

It's weird in the Western world, but the Japanese have such a strange aversion to facial hair, that _"hige"_ can mean beard or mustache. It technically refers to any hair on the face, including eyebrows. They at least have different kanji for beard, mustache, sideburns, brows, etc. But if spoken, it's all just one ambiguous _"hige."_

What I really don't understand about the story. Why was Blackbeard with Whitebeard for so long and had no ambitions even when Ace became 2nd Division Commander. But the moment he saw this DF, he turned on Whitebeard and everyone else and started a crime (according to pirate ethos). Maybe someone can explain that to me. I don't understand what Oda cobbled together here. It doesn't make any sense. Especially since Blackbeard always acts very covertly. He could have had it better under Whitebeard's command! And I have to say that I started watching OP around 2000 (more than 20 years ago!) and at some point I started reading the manga. Still, I don't understand why Oda created Blackbeard so weird and OP! BTW: This is the first time i watched this episoede since longe time!

blackbeard has always had ambition the entire reason he is on whitebeards ship is because he thought thats where he was most likely to find the yami yami no mi. so for decades he kept his true self and goals a secret wating for the perfect moment to make his move

He likely did not want to attract attention to the fruit . For most people even aware of it , it would look like a fruit with immense weaknesses and downsides to begin with , so it was rather far from envy . He probably expected that commanders would not want it as well , and leave it to "clueless" subordinates like him . As for why Blackbeard is that way ... i think the point for him is to just be "evil luffy" ... Someone with the same belief about Pirates being freedom incarnate , and with the ambition of being King ... except without any moral compass . If so it's pretty easy to fathom why he exists ... everyone love dark parallels with villains , it's a trope from eons of fiction

I mean, there was always the chance he'd never find the fruit at all. I 100% believe if Thatch'd never found it, he would've been content to live tge rest of his days in Whitebeard's, then Ace's, crew. It's not a new trope. There've been a couple villains who're fine with being regular people, so long as their dreams are unattainable.

Lol, do u guys think Mihawk could defeat Wb? The Wb u see in this arc is half dead, sick, had stage 5 cancer and multiple heart attacks mid battle, he couldnt even properly use his haki anynore due to all these nerfs. Trust me you will get to see Prime Wb when u get around 1000 episodes into the series, in a flashback, and you will realise Whitebeards true strength haha.
