I always had my classes say thank you to the bus driver when we were on excursions

We also always wave a thank you for cars stopping at the zebra crossing 😊

So interesting. We were brought up to do it at primary school - it was considered polite and what every good kid should do. Still do it today, 55 years later, I hope the drivers appreciate it :D

We often chew the ear off a cabby too & depending on the cost of the fare we usually thank him/her heaps or give them what for.

Australian here. I was in Japan recently and I always said hello to the tram drivers and thank you to the conductor in Japanese when I got off. I got a few pleasantly surprised looks. I hope it takes off in Japan. Also pro tip. Everyone says crime is low in Japan. That means it still exists. So apply your usual level of awareness as you would elsewhere.

In Sydney, there used to be a bell noise after you pressed the button to indicate that you wanted to get off at the next stop. On hearing the bell one afternoon, the driver called out, "That must be the front door." Without thinking I replied, "Don't get up. I'll find my way out." It's not hysterical, drop dead laughter, it's just brightening the day a little, you know.

I'm from Australia and we sometimes say thank you. There are many times when there are some aggro/tough looking drivers that makes us extroverts want to keep quiet. Quiet bus drivers tend to get less thank yous than loud, HAPPY ones.

We thank the thankless. Although it's their job, they're providing a direct human service to us. The least they deserve is a thank you.

as an Australian I went to New Zealand for our ski holiday we go on every year anyway when I went through the chairlifts I always shouted thank you to the operators and they were so surprised. Multiple people told me it made there day and I was very happy at the small bit of kindness that can make someone’s day. ❤

We did that in Singapore and the bus driver almost cried of joy. He must be having a very exhausting shift and he was so joyful of that small gesture. and Yes… we came from Sydney.

Also, years ago, it was well known that bus drivers had high suicide rates. Saying thank you is a way of keeping these precious people alive.

Funny, I never thought of yelling "THANK YOU" across the bus as being intimidating. I thought, because other people did it, that the driver might stop opening the door for us, especially at the back, if we didn't bother 🤷‍♂️

I say "thankyou" on the way in, and then when I get off I say "Have a good one", which is fairly common too.

Ido it in cafes too lol. As I walk out of the shop I yell back a thankyou. He's arab and took a while but now he shyly says you're welcome every time 😂

When I was in Singapore recently I was with a mate who lived there, and he saw me thank the bus driver… he thought it was so weird! It’s not weird, we always thank people who help us out. Retail staff, taxi drivers, servers and waiters, bus drivers, we appreciate what people do for us!

I've been to the states and always had servers and drivers look a bit shocked before cracking a big smile when I've said thank you. Yeah I say thank you to bus drivers and basically everyone at work (Australian) including the security guard in the shops as I’m leaving and the cashiers watching the self serve section or if any employees make eye contact as I’m leaving. I think most of us average Aussies had it drilled into us by our parents to be polite and have gratitude.. especially in rural Australia. The way you treat the people who serve you reflects on you as a person.. whether it's food, a bus ride etc

American here, when I ride the bus’s I say thank you to the driver when I leave. And it feels weird to not say goodbye to at least the hostess at a restaurant when you’re leaving.

You can always just give a brief wave to the driver, or towards one of the mirrors if you are exiting from the rear door.

Probably normal across the world, but when I was learning how to take the bus, I was double check where the bus was going with the driver and sat near the front. Sometimes the drive would tell me it would be the next stop, or make sure I got off at the correct location. So thats why I say thank you now.

Yes New Zealanders have always done this. I was born and grew up there. My mother always said “thank you driver” as we got off so I learned that from a little girl. I’ve lived in Aust now for about 40 years and to be honest, not all people and especially not some ethnicities say it here. People in Aus never said it when I first got here. My most recent trip home it was very obvious because I heard it from nearly everyone. I’m glad it’s become more the norm here. I remember someone early on saying to me I don’t need to thank the driver. Well no I don’t but it’s friendly and polite. Imagine driving a whole shift and not a thank you for your service. One wouldn’t do that to a waiter.

In Australia in against the the law not to thank your bus driver as you exit the bus. A small wave, nod or salute will suffice.

It would be rude not to thank someone for all the effort they put in. Buses don’t drive themselves. Yet.

I don't even bother since the recruitment for bus drivers is so easy to pass that complete crackhead drivers who can't even drive straight are the most common drivers.
