I asked both Japanese and non-Japanese women in Tokyo what qualities they look for in a man. The results are pretty interesting because they chose very different qualities.

That's the opposite; Japanese women like to have fun, which might be why they didn't choose honesty lol. And non-Japanese women themselves are honest, so they want someone similar to themselves.

“Should I speak Cantonese in Tokyo?” I did travel to Japan once, and with a guy friend from German who could also speak Cantonese, and during the trip he taught me some Cantonese, and we both look white. And we walked around talking to different Japanese people in Cantonese and it was quite hilarious. (One time a Japanese older man got really mad at us...he said he could recognize it as Cantonese and he absolutely hated Chinese people.) One time though, it was actually someone from Hong Kong but he looked Japanese, and he responded in perfect Cantonese (and my Cantonese of course wasn’t as good as his nor my travel buddy.) I did feel quite a bit embarrassed at the moment.

Cheers, Yuta for this interesting video. I really appreciate that you took into account about the cross section of foreigners being not necessarily indicitive of their home countries (that and they all cannot be seen as the same, as they are all from other areas of the world), due to being travellers or ex-pats, etc. Relatedly, I have reflected on the idea of some people, who state "Japanese (women) are better than foreign (women) because foreign (women) are (negative description/behaviour)." This MIGHT be true for some, but even if so, that negative behaviour may be due to a "local village" mentality (afraid of new things, unwilling to see beyond their own limited experiences, etc). The irony, then, if true, is that (males) lamenting foreign women back home, might be ignoring foreign women, just like themselves (willing to travel, interested in new things, or similar things as themselves), while pursuing the local Japanese equivalent as the women they found frustrating back home.

I don’t know about Japanese men in an intimate relationship, but the general culture seems to be about putting up a good front and never being directly , which can come off as not honest to other cultures. I would say that the standard/expectation of honesty is different in that culture.

I don't mean this to be rude, but NE Asians (Korea, Japan,China) are actually PROUD of it! "You should know, we dont speak our true mind" they say proudly. It's a huge cultural difference, and they are still brand brand brand new to multiculturalism .In the west that's seen as being 2faced and a sign of weakness and dishonesty. Still, they often at least act very polite. To be fair most of them are extremely civilised and have a 1st class of social order , in their own countries, with their own people .

This is really interesting. I think if I had to choose three, I would choose responsible, honest, and passionate. IF it was just two, then I'd go with witty and honest. Personally, I think some of these traits kind of depend on and sort of work together with other traits and can even produce others given the right circumstances. For instance, someone who is responsible can also be considered to be someone who is smart (using their past experience to make right decisions) and intelligent (someone who managed to learn to make the right decisions). Likewise, witty be would someone who is smart enough to take advantage of situations. So, a type of smartness is definitely relevant there. Therefore, I'm more or less cheating. EDIT: I changed my last third trait from smart to passionate. For me, someone passionate is willing to chase their goals no matter the cost. They're head strong and willing to make sacrifices. That just seems to scream "independence"-and that's something I think I value or see as "attractive".

I guess I would be pretty popular then. XD Although I'm not always passive ... ;) Humor, I find, is a hit or miss. This is because people have different concepts of humor. Some people like dark humor (like me, often times) while others are extremely offended by dark humor. And some find humor in the stupidest of things ... Call me weird, but I get a kick out of grossing people out. I'll pick up bugs and spiders bare handedly like nobody's business, and then laugh at people who freak out over such a little creature. (I'm so mean! XD) (I should watch myself though because I have some fears too! Mainly certain plants, which seems unusual.)

That Japanese Man Yuta. So how come Non-Japanese women had Honest on top of their list while Japanese women didn't have it on their list? If in Japan women no longer have to expect men to be honest in romantic relationships because most Japanese men are already considered honest, why is cheating prevalent there? Thanks a lot for your reply. We really appreciate and enjoy your informative, entertaining and delightful videos, thank you very much.

Because Honesty wasn't in their top 3 priority, simple as that. It doesn't mean that japanese men never lie and it doesn't mean all women in Japan has the same opinion.

Tiziano O Check out Asian Boss videos on cheating in Japan. I'm not comparing it to western countries but rather it was in reaction to Yuta's comment that Japanese men are honest like it's a given that's why the Japanese women in the survey didn't choose honesty.

I was being funny and goofy towards a Japanese girl that I had a crush on, she was really giggly and she would laugh at all of my jokes even if they weren’t funny at all until one day I got enough confidence to stole her a kiss... She never talked to me again

In Japan, there's a certain order you follow to kiss someone. Confess your love--> become lovers--> go to dates --> hold hands--> kiss. I think the Japanese girl just felt uncomfortable because you skipped steps, it has nothing to do with you personally.

So many fedora wearers in the comments who would rather push their stereotypes of what women want than actually listen to the women in the video.

Aren't fedora wearers generally associated with "white knight" type of guys? The m'lady meme is based on that.

Ryushi Shiratori Problem with females is that they tend to be confusing. If you're speaking to one, you can never be too sure whether if she is being honest, or just sarcastic/passive aggressive. They can be in denial as well. Obviously females will tell me i'm stupid or other similar words but, as far as my experience with females goes you can never be too sure when you're speaking to one.

Wow, the white knight is accusing others of being fedora wearers. That's ironic. I didn't see many negative comments, but I'd agree that many women don't honestly know what they want. They certainly don't want to be on KZfaq telling the world they want a man over 6 feet with 6 pack abs that makes over 6 figures. That immediately disqualifies the vast, vast majority of men and makes the girl look vain.

Funny might sound like a frivolous quality at first glance, but my husband and I are quite different in most ways except for humor. It's highly valuable. Humor is how many of us cope with situations that are not ideal, whether big or inconsequential. Having a partner who understands your humor puts you one step ahead in challenging situations. If you've ever made a quip that people around you didn't understand, you'll know what I mean. When your humor is not understood, you do not feel that you belong. I think that's why this attribute always makes it so high on these types of shortlists.
