Your advice about the gasket is spot on. 10 years ago I took my Tissot watch to a jeweler in a mall. I asked if he could replace the battery. He said "no problem". Well, he did replace the battery and everything appeared fine. About 2 years later, my watch started acting up. Certain functions just quit. Then, the watch quit completely. Out of curiosity I opened it up to take a look inside. The gasket on one edge was folded over and out of position. Moisture and dirt had been getting inside ever since the battery was replaced. It took two years before the damage killed my watch. The watch was destroyed because I tried to save a few bucks by taking it to a non-professional in a mall. I won't do that again.

Had a battery replaced in a digital Seiko and when returned the gasket was sticking out the watch! At first I was like WTF, but the reason was that jeweler did not have a replacement gasket and by letting it sticking out I would know that the old gasket was overdue and I should not use the watch before a replacement was done. That was actually a professionel move I think.

I have owned a Seiko Titanium Kinetic watch for more then 26 years. Love the way it looks and feels on my wrist. I take it off at bedtime and put it back on in the morning. In my experience the capacitors in these watches last about 5 years before they start to go bad. My watch is currently at a watchmaker for its fifth capacitor. Past replacements were about $100. This time they are asking $220. These repairs exceed what I paid for the watch. No more. When this one fails it’s headed for the junk drawer.

Fun Fact: A Braun/ Sonicare rechargeable toothbrush dock can wake up sleepy caps in you old kinetic watch. I have my Grandfathers old Seiko 5M23, bought in '95 and has sat for almost 25 years. After long bouts of vigorous shaking to charge, the seconds hand would only tic for about 30 seconds before coming to a stop. I laid the watch my Sonicare powered toothbrush dock while being very carefully to set it a position that not slide/ move and start to charge. If positioned right (it takes some patience lol) the second hand should start moving from a dead stop after a few seconds of sitting on the brush dock. I left mine to charge overnight (6-8 hours). The watch was slightly warm to the touch in the morning when removing from the charger but has continued to keep consistent time for last 24 hours with very little wear in an attempt at a battery drain test. I plan to swap my apple watch ultra and go back a few decades. A little polish and she'll be good as new.

Okay - HERE IS THE EASIEST WAY to wind your kinetic watch if you don't wear it every day - Works every time! Take your kinetic and wrap it thoroughly in dish towels or equivelent. Wrap it so that it is completely protected. Put it in your dryer on air dry (no heat) for one hour. Put other towels, etc. in there with it to further cushion it. The continual movement of rising and falling will charge it right up - while you watch a movie or something. Works perfectly, every time for me. Just trying to save folks a bunch of money, time and trouble. The tumbling action of the dryer is perfect - mimicking body motion throughout the day - and if it's properly cushioned there is absolutely no shock to the watch. No damage whatsoever. Try it.

I don't think it's a good idea, with the stem pulled out, it leaves room for moisture & dust to get inside the watch.

Clear and interesting explanations about the Kinetic technology ; and maybe their current niche spot in between quartz and Spring drive. =)
@MrZZooh Жыл бұрын
It's a cool idea executed poorly. The seconds hand has that ugly quartz tick tok and doesn't flow like an automatic watch does. It requires constant wearing to keep the capacitor charged and servicing is probably not as easily available especially if it's a chronograph or something. It's better to either go with an automatic watch or a battery one. Or if you have the money go with Grand Seiko Spring Drive and get the accuracy of a quartz watch with the look and feel of a real automatic watch.

The big problem with kinetic watches is that if you don’t wear it for a week (me) it will lose almost all charge and nothing you can do will ever get the full charge back. What I mean is, if you wear another watch for a week or more, let’s say a month even, no matter what you do that watch is dead and needs a new capacitor. I hate them. Automatics are far better and if it stops in the drawer, just shake it and wear it. No problem.

yes I have had success with this in the last few days. with a ~30 year old 5m22-7a40 i checked original capacitor that was at ~0.2volts. Not knowing anything about the watch at the time I ordered a new capacitor. I installed the new capacitor that arrived at about 1.4v (rated at 2.4v) and with some watch motion, it would start keeping time and voltage was 1.5v. I then put it on a Braun toothbrush charger overnight , trying to align near the coils at 6 & 9 o'clock and next morning it was at 2.2v which was the maximum I could get. When pushing the button to measure capacitor charge, the second hand moved the maximum 30 seconds. In short, the toothbrush charger worked very well. I now wonder if the old capacitor could come back to life, but it is 30 years old.

I gave up on kenetic watches because it is just too much requirement to have to wear them frequently. For someone with a collection, it is impossible. So now I just buy regular automatic watches since they just need a watch winder. Seiko kenetic are great watches...but at this point, I rather have a seiko automatic. Also replacing capacitor is a pain that even if you can change it, you have to find out if the watch has a 'reset' step after capacitor replacement. On mine, I had to charge it for 2 days and then do reset before it went back to per second jump instead of per 2 sec jump when capacitor is dead.
