I remember being 12 yo and on vacation staying at a motel and I had to completely walk around the pool, and making sure there wasn't a shark 🦈 in it. 😂😂

I'm old and I watched JAWS in the theater back in 1975 and it was the scariest movie I'd ever seen back then.

The reason for the sign was because in the early 1980’s someone broke into one of the Hillside Mausoleum’s and stole the head off of a corpse. To bad you didn’t venture in further, The hillside graves are creepy. Plus that Cemetery is in Weird NJ as the most haunted Cemetery in New Jersey.

True Story: In 1998, my father was a commercial fisherman, and ran trot lines in the St. Johns river in Green Cove Springs, Florida. One morning he was out running his line (taking his catch off), when a shark swam up next to his boat. We are assuming it was after the fish on his line. My dad said it was the length of his small fishing boat. The boat was 14 feet long. My dad had run these lines, in this river for 30+ years and it frightened him so badly he dropped the line and headed for shore. In all his time running lines, he had NEVER seen a shark. Note that the St. Johns river where his line was located is 38 miles from the ocean. 38 miles! The St. Johns is brackish, so there is a low salt content, but 38 miles?? And yes, it was definitely a shark. A tiger to be specific, because he noted the dorsal and the striping. Unbelievable!

Matawan Creek is a saltwater tidal creek and is certainly deep enough for a white shark. Eyewitness accounts of individuals who witnessed a shark within the creek in 1916 also describe a shark which is more similar to a white rather than a bull shark.

I saw Jaws in the movie theatre when it came out in 1975. The audience jumped and screamed throughout the movie. It was extremely suspenseful and scary for the time and still holds up to new viewers of the movie to this day. Thanks for the tour of Matawan New Jersey. This 1916 shark attack story sparked Peter Benchley to write the Novel Jaws. Hence, the movie was made from it. From tragedy the world received a masterpiece!

This is a great true life story of 1916 New Jersey Shark Attacks that inspired Jaws. If I see a great white shark on the beach I would’ve been freaked out and swim back to shore. I used to live right next to this creek/canal l in matawan up until last year. Literally a stone throw away!! I walked past this shark painting everyday and would always get so creeped out by it especially when the water was higher and in the evening, it looked like an actual shark from a distance. This story and that of the crocodile attacks on Japanese soldiers on Ramree Island during WWII give me the willies. I've read and heard stories about bull sharks found in the Mississippi River, hundreds of miles from the Gulf. The thought of bull sharks leaving the ocean and swimming up freshwater creeks and rivers make ya think. Rest in Eternal Peace, Lester Stillwell and Stanley Fisher.
