Acelya Lancaster It would be ironic if this was a song the band wrote themselves to satirize modern pop music. But this song (and video) were decided upon by their record label to sell completely unironically to consumers who they knew would eat it up. It isn’t irony if you acknowledge that something is stupid and then proceed to do it anyway. It’s just stupid

@@VideoGuy232 Thing is, this song isn't just some "stupid" pop song. It critiques both the way young, idealistic romantic people view relationships versus the way older, more cynical people do. At the same time, the story of the relationship in the song parallels the lead singer's drug addiction. The song is deep on multiple levels, but it also has a catchy melody and very danceable, uptempo rhythm. So yeah, there is some irony there. And the band is comfortable joking about that because they dont take themselves too seriously. Also, their names are on the songwriting credits so there isn't any reason to believe they didn't write the song themselves. I hope that helps you see this song in a different light.

@@philipbeadle6446 Have to agree with Video Guy. Acknowledging something is stupid, and then still doing it but saying "yeah, we know" is not irony. It's just self-awareness. They are not the same thing. No matter what the song is about, it is Pop music. Semi-charmed Life is about meth, but no one would argue, that it is not a pop-song. At no point in this video are they doing any hyperbole to show that it is meant to be ironic. This isn't like One Direction saying "we are not a pop band" and then wearing matching outfits and singing to 11 year old girls while playing with puppies. That would be ironic. They are just making a pop-video with hot chicks and saying "well, we don't really want this" but then doing it anyway. It's dumb. The quality of the song is subjective and everyone likes different stuff, so that has nothing to do with it, but it is definitely pop and definitely not ironic.

Just to make it clear, Matty said that the video was supposed to be a mockery of pop videos in general. When some people heard girls for the first time it was heavily criticized as people started accusing The 1975 to conforming to what music society listened to and how the label was forcing them to change the way they played music, so they made the video as 'pop' as it could be, and at the beginning the colours flicker and Matty says 'we're not a pop band' to mimic what some people were saying.

the oddest thing about matty healy's accent is that his talking accent is nowhere near as strong as his singing accent, like he sounds fairly normal and understandable but as soon as he sings he's almost incomprehensible. this is coming from a brit too, like literally even i don't know where the thickness of the accent comes from

1) No one seems to understand the irony at the beginning. 2) They ARE influenced by pop music and are part pop. DEAL WITH IT. There's nothing wrong with it. You'll live. 3) Age doesn't really matter in music. If it sounds good and someone likes it, it doesn't matter how old they are. 4) Everyone is blowing this way out of proportion. Just enjoy the music if you do, and move on if you don't. Sorted.
