First off, sorry I have been gone for a while. I have been on vacation so I have been unable to post any more of my series. However, I did have time to put together this video on Doo-Wop music.
Doo-wop (sometimes doo-wopp) is a style of vocal-based rhythm and blues music developed in African American communities in the 1940s, achieving mainstream popularity in the 1950s and early 1960s. Built upon vocal harmony, doo-wop was one of the most mainstream, pop-oriented R&B styles of the time. After finish this video I came to the conclusion that doo-wop didn't evolve much, but it's still nice to have all the top doo-wop songs wrapped up into one video.
Song list:
1953 The Orioles - Crying in the Chapel 0:05
1954 The Crew Cuts - Sh-Boom 0:30
1954 The Chords - Sh-Boom 0:55
1954 The Penguins - Earth Angel (Will You Be Mine) 1:20
1955 The Moonglows - Sincerely 1:45
1955 The Platters - The Great Pretender 2:10
1955 The Platters - Only You 2:35
1956 The Five Satins - In the Still of the Nite 3:00
1956 Frankie Lymon & The Teenagers - Why Do Fools Fall in Love? 3:25
1957 The Dominoes with Billy Ward - Star Dust 3:50
1957 Danny & The Juniors - At the Hop 4:15
1958 The Platters - Twilight Time 4:40
1958 The Platters - Smoke Gets in Your Eyes 5:05
1959 The Flamingos - I Only Have Eyes for You 5:30
1960 The Drifters - Save the Last Dance for Me 5:55
1961 The Marcels - Blue Moon 6:20
1962 Gene Chandler - Duke of Earl 6:45
1962 The Drifters - Up on the Roof 7:10
1963 The Drifters - On Broadway 7:35
1964 The Drifters - Under the Boardwalk 8:00

I'm 79 and sang along with each and every one of these wonderful 50's beauties. I had my radio on every minute I was home as a youth and listened to them on our 9 to midnight local " Cinderella Ballroom" radio show...Jr high rocked with these great songs. Takes me immediately to school dance and that special dance with your first big puppy love. I was amazed I could name the group of each. Thank you for posting this. In the 60's I had a 1957 studebaker hawk and I would pick up Mary-lou and these songs were always on the car radio as we would just cruise the beat and listen to them. both Mary-Lou and my little Studebaker Hawk are long since gone now and I really miss them both,,What I would give to have them both back again and to cruise the beat just once more.great memories,

Omg. At the time i was like 12 yrs. Old . my oldest brother is 72 now and I am 60 yrs old now let me tell you. My brother would play his 45's on his record player. And I would sit around listening to these songs. Boy what a memory. I love my brother.he has early demintia now. But I tell his kids. My nephew and niece. Please play these songs. For him .and I'm sure that he will remember something out of all this. Or at least a smile he may want us too see. God bless you brother. I love you very much. Even for my kids. I have brought this memory to carry in their hearts of their uncle. Now and forever.❤❤❤

I agree. This music, a lot of came from Black singers and musicians, did more to integreate this country than all of the laws put together. I was a real demonstration to us that people are people, and not black or white, or dark or light. Unfortunately, today many have forgotten that message or just plain never learned it. In my late years now, I am sometimes ashamed of just how much America has wasted and gone backwards. I pray ever day this will change but, as much as I have searched the Bible, I have not faound the word America.

When you were born in the 80s, had parents that made you listen to hard rock & metal from the 60s & 70s, but you still somehow end up knowing every song on this list. I think it's because there was a big nostalgia for the 50s/60s music & aesthetics in the 80s. I've probably heard all of these songs, plus a ton of Surf Rock, in 80s movies.

I couldn't agree with you more because Doo wop is really about relationships between man and woman and for me, it also was very pure time with respect for one another. Try to get a man today to express his inner feelings of love or loss without thinking of sex first even though God did wire our brains to procreate in a marriage relationship.

Agree with your comment about the females. I would've included the pioneers of girl groups dating back to '57, The Chantels. They paved the way for all of the '60's girl groups (including Patti LaBelle and the Bluebelles) and all of the Motown groups.

Does anyone remember Hunter Hancock and Margie? I'd listen to them late at night. Was only 13 at the time, now I'm 76. Yes, I grew up with the original voices, disliking the covers. Wish that this video had the full songs. I have a collection of oldies on Pandora, so I'm able to turn in to still get my groove on after 63yrs. Sweet! 🎶

The Closer you are. Great song for the end of the party. Danced to it many times great belly rubber. Thanks Will for helping make the 50's a great time in my life.

Thanks Will. I missed a lot of the early Doo-Wop thanks to my Dad being stationed on Guam in 1956-58. However, thanks to lots of looking, I've got about 5 tracks of "The Closer You Are" scattered throughout my personal collection and hear it often. It also helps that I spent a few years as a Top 40 radio DJ in the '60s and played lots of the great oldies.

So many people wasting time about who is or isn't on the list or what compilation is or isn't doo wop. Just play these, enjoy the music and if raised around the 50's like me...the memories. I remember sitting out on the stoop in the Bronx harmonizing. Tomas Amill Phu Cat 70-71

Yes Betty, it was a wonderful era musically . I was a teen in the 50's. The American and British stars were fantastic. These songs bring back so much nostalgia.

Hey Nathaniel! I was there in the 1950s Nathaniel! I would say you got it right dude! Most of the songs deserve to be in the top 20! Certainly the Platters are well represented as well as the Five Satins and The Drifters and Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers also. Good choices dude!
