Hi guys, and welcome back to yasminecollects! Perhaps it's the popularity of the barbie movie, maybe its because im a barbie girl, maybe it's just the magic of memories...
Today we are looking at this 2001 Barbie Sing With Me Karaoke Machine. I purchased this unit listed in working condition, which I would say most- if not all current listings for this item state otherwise. You'll see in this video if it's actually true. This unit features cassette playback, cd input, cassette recording and cd to cassette recording. It also has a fun echo for karaoke fun. I very much remember this unit being a beast of a tape player as a kiddo, and now we finally get a chance to open it up and see what it's all about! It may not be a cassette deck, but this toy beats my modern (ish) Toshiba TY-CKM39

7:09 there is a trick you can do on mechanical tape decks to get that effect by holding down record and play halfway so that the tape moves faster while recording, resulting in slowed playback.

I agree with the bad power supply assessment. That battery compartment is not bad at all. I’ve had to clean way worse. The worst part is when the metal tabs break off from the corrosion then you are sol. A toothbrush and alcohol will do wonders. Sometimes I just chip away at it with a small pick and then blow it out with some canned air.

As another commenter mentioned, it says "6V DC" where the plug goes in the barbie unit (the input), and that adapter has an output of 15V AC. Long ago I sadly fried a cool piece of retro tech making this mistake. Unfortunately that's maybe what happened here. It's why you always wanna pay close attention to outputs of power bricks and the inputs required by the device. I too had to learn this the hard way 😔

Aw man, I feel like a dumdum for not checking that! wonder where the seller got that plug... I know better than to trust what they send. Hopefully repairing the battery compartment saves it

@YasmineCollects yea i feel bad for ya because I know you said it was the one the seller gave you. If i bought a listing i would have assumed the power brick they gave was the one that actually belonged to it, but apparently they gave you a power block from something completely different which happened to have the same plug. There's no loss in trying some batteries at this point. You can at least be sure it will give out the right power. As someone else also said, the corrosion doesn't look that bad. I personally have seen much worse and still got them to work. Also, the repair to any damage to the circuit board might be rather easy, like maybe down to one capacitor, but I admit that is not something I know much about.

These Things were not built to last that long because its mainly thrown around or Treated like a Toy by kids or teens, but at least this one survived well and is repairable by all means. if the plastic parts are brittle and breaks well thats another story. so far looks to be a conductivity issue and an easy fix. Hope it all works out for you. enjoy your memories !

When I saw the thumbnail I thought that karaoke machine looked familiar. I had the Fisher-Price Tuff Stuff Sing-a-Long Karaoke Cassette Machine, it was designed similarly to this unit with the same front buttons and knobs, it was blue and yellow, but the version I had, had a microphone that snapped to the back and a spot to loop the excess cable. I gave mine up when it ate a tape and a lot of it got stuck in the pinch roller, nowadays I probably would've taken it apart and fixed it like you would. But I didn't before we gave it away. I also agree with the other commenters on the power adapter mismatch. Hopefully cleaning the battery compartment does you good and you can continue using it, or it may work with a different correct voltage DC adapter. Given no capacitors popped on the photo you showed and I don't see any obvious board damage you might have gotten really lucky. I did the same thing with a pair of computer speakers that started humming by using an AC adapter, I was lazy and didn't get the correct DC adapter but the correct voltage, I only had it plugged in and running for 15 seconds but I wasn't so lucky. 😁

I didn't hear any popping/see smoke thank GOODNESS so I'm hoping to be safe. It just quietly stopped playing my tape haha, i'm mad I didn't check and annoyed that a seller would just send a random power adapter. smh

theres alot on ebay for not much money if you just want another machine. I have a large amount of vcrs nad tapes imported from Japan to. @@YasmineCollects

Thats not the right adapter for the unit. Back of barbie calls for 6v DC and that adapter is (was) 15v AC at a very low current. Probably the buzz was from the AC input and the adapter was cooking up because it was being overloaded.

@@YasmineCollects I would try batteries or a correct adapter before assuming the worst. You probably have a 5v adapter from something like a router or whatever you can try and see if it works since thats still in the range of what 4 almost dead batteries will output.

The volume limiter is to limit the maximum volume if you don't want your child to listen to it too loud. That's why it's behind a screw, unaccessable to children.
