Funny!! I have been an RN since '96 and have truly come to appreciate males in our profession. Personally, I think the term "nurse" is outdated, yet all the other professional titles have been taken. The word Nurse insinuates a female and somewhat physical and intimate connection. How about "DA"/ doctor's assistant? DIAP? (Do It All Person). ...LOLP (License on line personnel?)....

@@michaelkitchen6000 the female nurses look at you as being less than a physician or even a PA so they do look at you as a lesser man. i worked as a guard in a prison hospital (yes it was a 4 floor prison/hospital and i grew to look down on the ALL the LPNs (every last one of them) and 75% of the RNs as absolute jumped up trash (and i view females as trash to begin with).

Yep Cali nurses make a lot of money but the stuff you have to do in that field is not easy money. There are other fields outside of healthcare that make way more money with less stress.

I've had some female nurses tell me some wild things about PACU and the recovery rooms. You mentioned you work in PACU. Female nurses have told me of a cute guy comes through post surgery, and is still unconscious under anesthesia that a bunch of female nurses will come through and lift up his gown and laugh gawk or mock him. How often does this occur? And is there an atmosphere if you do report them are you gonna be Black balled by female nurses? It does occur frequently and its sexual assault in my opinion to expose unconscious male patients like that just for laughs or just to sexually degrade them. It's sad cuz guys find out about what happens to them under anesthesia and they will just avoid or push off necessary medical treatment because they dont want to endure that embarrassment and will likely die earlier in life because of it. All because female nurses think its funny to degrade unconscious Male patients and nobody reports them. It's sad! REALLY sad!

I seethed after a car accident, the only male nurse in the whole floor was assigned to me!!! 4'8' (short, really, my husband is 8'2' and willing to help. I din´t need a male nurse at all but they insisted. I had to threaten to press charges

does it at least pay well? Im considering the medical industry bc I really like the idea of 3 12 hour shifts plus the good health insurance. I don't have any schooling unfortunately, so Im looking into CNA(which seems like its called patient care tech now) or a cardiac arrhythmia tech or ekg tech.

@@Katie-vy5rd yea I’ve been a cna now at a hospital for two months. Hardest job I ever had. Overworked underpaid under appreciated. Abused from some nurses. A lot of these nurses are overworked themselves and stressed out. Leaning towards respiratory therapist school. Those people seem much happier. If I do that and work and extra shift every other week I’m making just as much as the nurses

I'll have to say though , when I do work with males, mostly , it's a breath of fresh air and since I was raised with two brothers I get along better with most, not all, but mostly. I should've listened to myself a long time ago telling me that I would be working with mostly other females.. oh well.. I can always look into engineering or something maybe somewhere out in nature, just me and the bears..... no charting, that too, for me,has made nursing or patient care such a turn off. I have nonidea what interests you but there's one thing I look back and wonder if pathology assistant p (there's a program at Duke) was something I would have done well at , too late now but ypu might explore if science is your thing.

In North America, most physicians under the age of 40 are female, so a person would have to be quite unaccustomed to the healthcare system to make that assumption.

Nursing is a huge field with many perks and it's a rewarding profession.

The third one has happened to me a few times I’m like no I’m not going to school to be a doctor. I’m a nurse it’s like people can’t comprehend that or don’t want to.

While I'm inclined to agree that I'd pick nursing over warehouse any day, I do feel the need to point out that shipments of goods can be packed, and subsequently broken down, in ergonomical ways. You can put things together in the most user friendly way, and the person who came before you probably did exactly that. Patients can't really be broken down into easy to handle units. The weight distribution isn't ideal. They're awkward, and they have limbs that flop all over the place. Unlike boxes, they can get violent and kick, punch, and bite in the middle of transit, causing you to move in awkward ways to try to balance between moving the patient and protecting yourself. I'd wager that you've never had a 300lb box whose knees buckled on the way to the bathroom, leaving you to singlehandedly catch it and try to haul its ass back to bed. Or the dead weight 400lb stroke patient who you are trying to hold up with one hand because you need the other hand free to wipe their ass and place fresh linens. It's plenty physical, it's 12 hours long, and because of many factors (including the fact that it deals with life and death; hospital admins are bastards who will staff short in the name of profit; and nursing as a profession hasn't really embraced the union), those 12+ hours may be spent on your feet the entire time, without a single break. We try to make things easier on ourselves with adjustable beds, slide boards and mechanical lifts, but at a certain point it comes down to the fact that humans aren't ideal objects to manhandle, and that's just the way it is. Contrast with working in a warehouse where your duty is always to move heavy objects... but you have a lot more control over it. Things are packed into pallets that can be moved with forklifts and pallet jacks. You can practice good mechanics because the goods you are moving were packed into boxes that were designed to be carried by a person. Anecdotally I've know quite a few people who switched from stereotypically physical careers (welding, construction) into nursing who say that they severely underestimated how much it would make their backs hurt.

i was a guard in a prison hospital for 6 years. I had to deal with the same thing, up to and including discovering how many females genuinely enjoy anal sex (my favorite was once a nurse emailed another nurse... an email that included her glowing love of anal sex.....and accidentally had all selected as recipient) why did you let it bother you instead of block it out? i hope you didn't go to management as a man.

@@ciaran1659 Yes, male doctors are fine. They don’t get as up close and personal as nurses do. For example, when I was a little girl, I had to have my appendix out. A nurse would have to take me to the bathroom, and nurses cared for me at my bedside with bed baths and things like that. That’s embarrassing enough, but for a man to do all that, I would have been so embarrassed!

Solution: Work nights. No physician rounding, no working side by side with docs. Most of your correspondence will be over phone or through secure chat, if it happens at all. Still get the dynamic of being a rare male in an overwhelmingly female nursing unit. I think this applies moreso at a small hospital but still. After going nights and seeing the utter lack of admin, physicians, interdisciplinary staff (read: PT/OT), and just coming into work and doing your job, relatively few strings attached... I'll never go back to days
