All that stuff, weekends, holidays, clubbing, vacations, all of that is over for me. I'm 66. Been there done that. All I want to do is be of service and make money so I can develop my land for my retirement. I"d like to be able to leave something for my kids. I would take any shift. The travel thing is sounding really good to me. Im always alone anyway. Not married and kids are spread all over the country. I haven't even started yet. I don't have an AS degree and never took the ACT, so I'm at the very beginning of this journey. I'm learning so much from all of you seasoned nurses. I'm super excited! I'll be almost 70 when I finish school! I'm not scared! I'm going to do this!

@@johnnycage2746 At times it was. I am a loner anyway. It enabled me to go to places in between contracts that I could not have afforded otherwise. While in Saudi I traveled to Africa twice, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, England. So many wonderful memories.

Nursing is different for everyone! Sometimes someone’s pros can be someone else’s cons and vice versa, for example, some enjoy overnight shift while most don’t. But yes, nursing is a hard job in general. It’s interesting to hear different take from many nursing professions.

No one is talking about responsibilities or role. I think as a Nurse I know what individuals do and/or do not do. Therefore, my statement is in reference to those who want to divide the profession based on who they are instead of the notion of unit as "NURSES." I do not need a literature on my profession and thank you.

My 2 cents... because of the staffing crisis right now, there are many places you can walk in to a day shift job as a brand new RN because nurses are leaving these prime positions in droves and management will practically do anything to get these new nurses to stay.

I had to have a upper gi Friday, I told my CRNA about how I tried to go to college to be a CRNA after I graduated high school in 08 but it was gonna be too hard because of my cerebral palsy, so I Donate to the CRNA Foundation, he said that’s awesome and took a picture with me, he said when I Donate to the CRNA Foundation that help out a lot

19 and hour about 10 years ago, he said. Like he had been saying, the pay is variable. It depends on your location and the company. Some companies/hospitals are cheap.

I found an unusual gem in Seattle that is a very flexible and team oriented unit. They don’t micromanage breaks and time clocks. If I even want over time I can always get it. If I don’t I don’t have to. Ever. It’s day shift as well. Unfortunately the weekend thing still exists.

Rotating between day shift and night shift sounds terrible! Who the hell would agree to a schedule like that? Sheeeesh! But what in the world! Nurses in Alabama are making less per hour than Target employees. No wonder a nurse went viral in Alabama for saying she was going to quit her nursing job to go work at Target.

Nursing in ca is great. How expensive Cali is dependent on where you are. There are areas in Cali that keep Bay Area wages without the high col in the bay such as sacremento and north Bay Area(rural).

The Bay Area pays a lot more, but the cost of housing is INSANE. I know a lot of people down there who are paying more than $3000 a month for a tiny little studio apartment.

A lot of people don’t like night shift because you’re working into the next day. I have no problems with it now but I feel like I want to transition to day shift once my year is up.

Nursing used to never be about the money, it was about the care, compassion and treatment of the hospitalized. Yes, I have worked and been a patient in specialized units and a handful of nurses were there for the right reason. They were the ones tending to patients without complaint or calling for an aide, or sitting at the desk talking for hours about crap most of the shift. Like any other job with a title...it doesn't make you good at it.

In my area Philly staff nursing in a magnet hospital starts new grads with 40ish after 1 year residence salary jumps up to 49-50ish + shift diff. The cost of living is fair.

I moved to Alabama for one year after living in nyc my entire life! I went to GSU! I couldn’t believe what I saw, how much you got paid, I made more as a PCT! I get sad when I think of Alabama. So few hospitals, horrible beyond horrid pay…. Glad you ventured out!

That’s about how much I was making as a new grad on nights…19$ an hour base and up to 24$ an hour since I worked nights. That was in 2011. I too thought it was a lot of money back then but looking back on it now it was kind of a slap in the face to be paid that little for all the work we did short staffed.

True. It's important to insist on a pay that is fair in relation to a nurses value. Unions seem to be the only way to guarantee this for RNs.

English nurses are paid even less than this would you believe? In 2023 the average Staff Nurse in England is paid about £15 an hour, $19.

I'm currently out of work by choice. I was working 50 hr weeks for the last 5 months, mandatory. I couldn't stand it anymore. When I go back, I'm probably going back part time.

Do not go into nursing for the money. I have found that no matter what job you choose to do, it's very important that you enjoy what you do and get along well with your teammates. That's what matters most. To move around the country chasing dollar signs is not where it's at. If you are not happy, no amount of money will help you. Stop nickel and diming everything and talking about punching in and punching out. You have to punch in and punch out if you want to get paid. It's a necessary evil. Nowadays, they allow people to punch in online for convenience.

Unfortunately people need to pay their bills and student loans and the hospital only sees you as a number for their profits, what other profession would you tell to work for leas money than they deserve ? It's only because it's a female dominated industry. Nurses deserve to be compensated for their hard work, we didn't go to school to be nuns.

My favorite nurse schedule is either A. Two 16-hour shifts and one 8-hour shift a week OR B. Three 12-hour shifts week one and four 12-hour shifts week two. Repeat. This also allows me to get 80 hours a pay period, averaging out to 40 each week.

I used to work the 2/16, they paid us shift differential plus the paycheck was for 40hr without the additional 8hr shift. But we had to work every weekend to get those perks. It was the perfect shift for students.

used to be all about compassion, helping caring, but after dealing with people that are drug seeking, think they are the only one, evil people that over use call light and are not thankful, it has become all about job security cause nurses hardly ever get fired, and the money cause the money is good but the patients OMG can test even the most seasoned nurse for a change in jobs!

There are many different types of nursing, I have been a RN for 38 yrs, I can’t imagine doing anything else. I left direct patient care 8 yrs ago.. no weekends, Holidays, weekends.., work 4 10 hour days, earn 6 figures.. think outside the box. Best career ❤❤

Hey bro, I’m 22 in California and more than halfway done with prerequisites I got a 80 on the teas but I’m studying to take it again. I’m honestly scared about nursing still because of the med error case and I am not a night owl either and just the overwhelming stress. i still haven’t been able to shadow cuz of Covid. You think I should still pursue nursing or is it just too broken of a profession?

I wouldn't try to advise on such a huge topic over a comment. I suggest continue pursuing the path to understand more if it is right for you.

Try nursing assistant first. It'll help you make a decision if nursing is right for you. Start from the bottom up. No one can ever tell you what is right for you. All professions have their ups and downs. But you can't nor won't make it if you are full of anxieties. Procrastinating over what to study wastes too much time. Jump in get your feet wet. If that doesn't work try studying something else.

This was such a good video. Thank you for all of the information and I appreciate your honesty. I’m a new grad nurse, and passed my NCLEX, so this is very helpful. How long, would you say, did it take you before you felt more comfortable as a nurse? I’ve asked nurses that have 2-3 years of experience and they tell me that’s it’s still hard, that there are times when they still don’t know what to do.

I'm sure it depends on the type of work you do (critical care, med Surg, GI lab, ECT) but when I had my first job as a new grad it took me about 6 months to start to feel comfortable. After about a year, I was definitely comfortable. But even nurses of 10 or 15 years encounter new situations where they may not be sure what to do. It's all about trusting your instinct to get to the resources you need to handle the situation.

@@WhattaRiot Hello Brie C, and thank you for your reply and your straightforward answer. I know there can be a steep learning curve for new nurses, on top of all of the everyday stress that this job is well known for. So much of that stress comes from having a high nurse to patient ratio. It’s refreshing to know that even experienced nurses can encounter situations were they might feel unsure as to the best course of action. In a lot of ways, nursing is being able to take a leap of faith, to tell yourself that “you got this”. I want to thank you again for answering and I wish you the best.

Really appreciate video for the new nurses or especially the international nurses which I am one of them... You did mention about the pay rates but it was 2012 Could you please share what is the current rate for new nurses and would you please shed light on how to cope with those issues especially with the management. The pay will vary from state to state greatly, fluctuating to match the cost of living difference. You could earn $50,000 a year in Alabama or $150,000 a year in California working the same amount of hours.

Travel nurses have come to our small rural hospital post pandemic, and basically they are annoying, they are not invested, they basically will do the minimum and they just dont care. Either that, or maybe its because they are young and inexperienced, AKA clueless. A bunch of my coworkers have recently left for other departments or fields and it is me and the travelers. Boy I feel like fool now for not leaving when I had the chance.

Nursing is a great field to go into whats not great is GREED when the places you work whether its LTC or Hospital they overwork you with minimum support/resources. Im a LPN i enjoy working agency 1099 choose your schedule n your pay and where you want to work. I dknt ever want to be on staff with a hospital or LTC

I am in nursing school right now. Listening to all this, it sounds like some sort of modern slavery to me. I am now seriously considering not coming back when this semester is over. At school faculty makes nursing seem completely different. But after a few clinical practices, I am starting to realize how controlling and toxic the healthcare environment can be. I got accepted into an ADN program starting Fall 2022 - however, man it's tough to make the choice to go through with it, lots of discouraging honest information coming out about the RN field right now. I think i'll stay in IT and dive into coding.

I would say you decide what is your passion. Don’t let everyone scare you. I am a nurse and I find it rewarding. Of course every job is tough, not only nursing. And the grass may never be greener on the other side. Just stick with your passion and if you like nursing, go for it. Again, these videos are more PERSONAL take about the nursing job, everyone in nursing field has different opinions too. Don’t let it affect and intimidate your choice!

I feel like he’s just had a shitty experience in his career. My hospital isn’t great, but they treat us decently, and compensate well

The money is nice, sure, but not if you're crap at doing the work. It's not fair to patients that they get a raggedy MD, nurse, or whatever because they've worked over 40 hours that week and are wading through mental oatmeal just to get through it.

You didn't like being salaried or an hourly worker. Are you ever happy? As a W-2 worker, of course you need approval to take time off, but you also pay 7.65% more in taxes. You make me not want to pursue nursing if so many nurses dislike their jobs. Be a nurse because you want to help people, not because you want to be rich.

This outlook is gross, why is nursing the only career where we don’t get to want to make more money? because it’s a women dominated profession? But no every other profession including doctors get to be money hungry 😂 what a double standard. You can want to help people and want to be rich

@@martinmcdonald780 I did not mean that nurses shouldn't make good money. With all the departures in nursing, I suspect salaries will have to increase to attract more nurses. Nursing school is not easy so nurses deserve a great starting salary with upside opportunities.

@@christiantravis1417 I wouldn't let all the negative feedback regarding nursing ever second guess what YOU want to do. Is nursing stressful AF? Damn right it is. You can find certain nursing jobs that will be very rewarding. I do agency and made 69.00 last night.I worked a double. I think Nurses are extremely intelligent, however do I really deserve to make that much money an hour? Probably not. I think pay for Nurses within the ranges of $50/he is very reasonable. Don't like to judge people, but this KZfaq Nurse seems to be money driven. That's his choice, hit going into nursing for the money........you will be 100% absolutely miserable. Guaranteed.

@@martinmcdonald780 I don't think OP's outlook is gross. It also didn't appear to have anything to do with nursing being a female dominated profession. Nursing at times sucks because it is mainly run by women. If men ran it, it would be so much better.

I never really asked for much vacation time, but working the 12hr shifts I would often get 4 sometimes 5 days off in a row without needing to tap into my PTO. How many jobs out there give you this much time off consecutively, not many I'd say.

The homeless in many states probably from Florida + other nursing schools/highway robbery. Please no one attend ICHS international college of health sciences in Boynton Beach (acen accredited). 90% student body are from California and unaware of battles & scheming that awaits. Spread The Word. 100s don't pass exit exam each semester and held there much longer than anticipated. "Contracts" change every semester. With that $$ you can move to any state's community college!! Where goes the money ICHS?? Barely a campus. Little clinical site availability. Students pay proctor most exam. On campus testing is another nightmare. Exams questions completely random and each is at least 30-45% grade. Staff are 'fired' and rehired rotating positions constantly. Staff death from overdoses and fired for sexual favor 'rumors'. Even 'rumor' of students suicides. (I guess death happens in hospitals too, it's just preparation?) Unable to reach staff by phone, email, or in-person and so many LIES. Instructors rotate from agency. Some graduated from shut-down diploma mills. Family&friend-run business racket- there's many if FL. Somehow does DeSantis benefit?!

I'm very proud to be in the nursing field but in this context we're talking about my time working as an RN. My current scope of practice, salary, workflow, responsibilities, are very different than that of my time working as an RN.

I personally think this is the issue with the profession. Individuals always look for ways to divide themselves by education, licensure, degree, certification, position, and more. We are all nurses despite our specialization, and that is the point I’m trying to make with my comment. Unit is such a powerful thing…..you know what I mean right?
