DESCRIPTION
The Alternating Cable Cast On is a version of the Cable Cast On. The advantage of Cable Cast Ons is that they create a very durable edge, which is great for edges that get a lot of wear and tear, such as sweater cuffs, collars, or the bottom edge of a sweater. The difference in an Alternating Cable Cast On is that it adapts the cable cast on for ribbing.
MATERIALS USED
Lion Brand Yarn Woolspun - Taupe

Shouldn't step 5 enter the stitch from back to front to create a purl since the slip knot and the first stitch is a knit ?

My daughter (in the fashion industry) loves your shirt! Thank you for this cast on. I have been searching high and low for a good rib cast on.

Thanks. This cleared up some stuff for me. I need this for ribbing, but this cast on is sooooo dang slow when i do it. I wish there was a cast on as quick as the long-tail cast on that would lend itself well to 1x1 ribbing.

If you need the foundation row to be stretchy, it's better to take the time. You won't be sorry.

@@chillbro2275 Yeah, have a lovely short sleeve sweater I want to make, cotton yarn. But can't find a good substitute. Found something I like, but the gauge won't work. Now I either have to find another pattern, or keep looking. One of the perils of living in a small town. Limited options. Btw, since I knit continental style, I found using a crochet hook instead of the R needle muuuch easier for the foundation row. Like the needle, you just insert the hook from the front/back depending on whether you need a k or a p. (Move the yarn first, then insert the hook.)

Really helpful, but I have a question: Most of the time when you enter the drawn-out loop, you came at it from underneath to put it on the left hand needle. But in one stitch you created, you came at it from the top to put it on the left hand needle. Does that twist the stitch somehow changing the way you place it onto the left hand needle?

I believe the one time he comes at it from the top is a mistake. Always insert the left needle from the bottom.

In my opinion this the most convoluted cast on method ever . I couldn't keep track which way i had put my needles in ,it takes way to long to cast on 100 stitches this way . Cant do it .

Ok. So I was trying to find a clear explanation. But I noticed that you switched back and forth on whether you picked up the front or back yarn regardless if it was a knit or purl stitch. And when I watched another video, hers was more straightforward. And seems to skip straight from knit the first to then purl. Yours includes doing knit first, go through front, then go through back (purl). Is there a reason yours is different on this part? And is there a reason you swapped back and forth on what yarn you picked up in the sense that it didn't matter? I am honestly asking becuase I am trying to understand. What I am making is going to charity. Here is her video. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mNtlrchl0rrKj5c.html

Sorry, but for me, confusing steps; mixed directions on inserting needle into loop. Seems like there are 3 knit sts (cast on st and 2 knit stitches) before the first purl stitch.

This cast on is fun to do, but I am terrible at making it look good for the second row and beyond.

I think you should clarify that you're doing a 2x2 rib instead of a 1x1. That threw me off.

The motions are still the same. Knitting continental shouldn’t make much difference.
