Early in the morning in the Amazon rainforest - the air is thick with humidity and wildlife sounds. The insect chorus is deafening, and birds are trying to do their part by calling incessantly everywhere. The raucous atmosphere is delightful and full of little detail, although it can get overwhelming at times. This is not a rainforest soundscape to fall asleep to.
On my trip to the Javari valley in October 2022, I was working hard every day getting to remote parts of the jungle to drop or collect recording rigs. Walking in the thick secondary rainforest was grueling, especially with lots of kit. By the end of the day I was exhausted and ready to crash in my hut. Every day there would be more exhaustion persisting from the previous day even though I was sleeping well. I was also going on night walks so after a week of doing this I was a bit of a zombie in the mornings.
Regardless, I managed to wake up extra early on a few occasions and walk deep into the rainforest to hear the sounds and experience the jungle before dawn. I also did some hammock camping and found it difficult to sleep for more than half an hour at a time because I wanted to listen to the ever-changing soundscape.
Having said all this, you don't have to go through all the effort I did to experience the rainforest (although I'd recommend this, at least as a once-in-a-lifetime experience). You can sit on your comfy sofa put on a pair of good headphones and listen to my recordings while imagining you're slogging through spiky undergrowth in scorching heat and 100% humidity. Enjoy!
