The Yuba County Five were young men from Yuba City, California, with mild intellectual disabilities or psychiatric conditions, who attended a college basketball game at California State University, Chico, on the night of February 24, 1978. Four of them-Bill Sterling, 29; Jack Huett, 24; Ted Weiher, 32; and Jack Madruga, 30-were later found dead; the fifth, Gary Mathias, 25, has never been found.

This one struck a chord. In the 6th grade, I read a story called Flower's for Algernon. I didn't know this story would become an anchor for my mental health going forward. The story is about a "mentally challenged" man who along with some mice were given a new drug. All the mice but one died, the one that survived went total Rats of Nimh, becoming intelligent enough to understand words. The man, likewise didn't die (immediately anyway) and became a super genius. However the drug's effects were temporary, and "most" of the story describes the man's "fall" back into being a Dullard, the destruction of his ego, and bringing flowers to the grave of a mouse who is the only other being on the planet to understand his pain. I was a Ritalin baby. I have advanced and destructive adhd with extensive disassociation. I would later be a poster child for Borderline Personality Disorder, however the Docs at the time didn't know this, and when I was introduced to Ritalin as an 8 year old, I remember having hourly bouts of crying, aka I "am" the reason they say don't give it to children under 12. at 15 however it was a completely different story. I became.... cool..... I could talk to people, I could interact and be part of the group.... But then my resistance kicked in. Over 20 years I call it my cursed liver, "any" drug I take works great for about 2 weeks and then it all falls apart or I have to double or quadruple my dosing to keep the same effect which is entirely untenable. The line that hurt me the most was my best friend saying "Can we have the other Kevin back again? He was actually cool." Algernon was the only reason I didn't put a bullet in ma brain that day.

Leaving the car in that scenario seems really common, even more so when people run out of gas. I think I saw two separate people had died in the past 2 weeks in Death Valley and they found them on routine checkups around the area or something. One dude was from Huntington Beach, died 30 feet off the highway and less than 3 miles from his car after running out of gas. What was weird to me was that he had already mentioned he was low on gas when he got cited for off-road driving two weeks earlier. But yeah, an extreme place in the other end of the spectrum with a 123F heatwave...

As someone on the autism spectrum with ADHD and clinical depression, this one hits home. Ableism is still alive and well, with organizations such as Autism Speaks being prime examples of awful people disguising their true intentions behind a mask of charity, and even down to the way people act towards neurodivergent people. It's gotten slightly better since the 70s but we have a VERY long way to go... Thank you, DK and Bricky, for handling this case with class and dignity, and raising awareness about the actual consequences ableism can have on people's lives.

I am interested to know what will be next months mystery tale. Edit. The Recent update part Ill be honest I had a FEELING that they were bulled to go to the woods. It honestly didnt make any sense that they went their all on their own SOMEONE had to force them to go their and I had a feeling it was the towns bully. It always seems to be the town bully and I can just see it being all played out like in a 1970s horror film

This story sadly makes a lot of sense as someone who worked and grew up around a lot of disabled people. The thing most people dont understand is that change is the single biggest hurdle for people with disabilities. Things dont change for some of them and its really upsetting when they do. Take a wrong turn and you'll keep going out of panic that any other turn is also wrong. If your car gets stuck its now stuck. The idea they could have unstuck it might not have occurred to them because its stuck. Im amazed someone wrapped him up and kept him alive for all those weeks. Because they found him wrapped up, and he would have died within days of not drinking. The guy with the heart attack probably saw them but either didn't actually call out or only got the memo long after they left which happens when your delirious. The lady at the town is most likely lying and so is the store owner. Trying to cash in when they find the bodies happens all the time. Especially since we have no clue who they tried to call on the phone.

One explanation for the unused supplies, since the one dude’s feet were already ruined by the time they got there, the situation was such that they would die of gangrene with out immediate help. At that point there would have been nothing to do but head back out and hope you find help before necrosis sets in. The shoes being swapped out makes me think that more.

The quality of these & DK's work in putting it together is outstanding. This was very sad, but the addendum made it more chilling. It could be that the heart attack guy shouting scared them, they ran off in to the woods & then couldn't find their way back to the car, got disorientated & walked off in the wrong direction. Then simply having good manners & their disabilities, not realising what the ranger trailer was for, they didn't want to eat 'other people's food' without permission.

My dad and I winged out on a forestry road to look for fishing spots in the middle of nowhere up in Shasta county a couple of years ago. It was snowy, we were in my dad's forerunner, and we were maybe twenty-thirty miles from any actual roads, and we found a couple of college guys that had gotten their dinky little sedan stuck in a snow drift. They were okay, but there phones were pretty much dead and they had like absolutely no idea where they were or how to get out of their. So like, be safe people. Don't count on random fishermen exploring out of the way fishing spots to help you out.

"Where'd they get a half a quart of milk?" That's just a pint. Pint bottles of milk are pretty common. My take is that the 5 boys bought 2 Pepsi's and 3 pints of milk, i.e. one drink for everyone. The cashier may have rung it up as a quart and a half to charge the boys extra, save them money, weasel out of taxes, or some other reason. Could also be that sometime between the boys buying the 3 pints of milk and the official statement taken someone (most likely either the officer taking the statement or the clerk giving it) mentally converted 3 pints to "a quart and a half" and it got into the official statement that way.

The thing with them leaving the car that you have to think about is that even the family of one of them said they lacked common sense in a lot of situations, to someone like that its not unthinkable that they crashed into some snow, then thought "cars stop working when they crash" and then being certain of that decided to not even bother trying to get it out.

Casings - Pistol caliber? People hunt with handguns and those who do often choose higher calibers. Casings in the vehicle AND none of the boys were known to have a firearm of any kind? Suspicious. No Fire -- I lean toward a fear of fire. Especially with that story where the one guy had to be dragged out of the housefire. Being torn between your OC and a danger to your life is traumatic. That sort of trauma can rear up at any trigger. 4-6 feet of snowdrift can easily hide a building like a shed or small to midsize propane tank and the controls for such. That's why they started putting explicit instructions in frames inside of these rescue huts. Lists of what can be found, how often things are checked, when the last check happened, etc. There aren't many places that still use rescue huts, preferring to rely on manned ranger stations, but if you ever stop at one, you can be assured that someone will be checking on it within a regular time frame.

Speaking as a Canadian, that hike in 4-6 feet snow would get exhausting very quickly. The required route march to get qualified for basic winter warfare in the Canadian army is shorter than what these guys did, despite their mental challenges and lack of proper gear to do that

You have to look into the red pickup truck that was seen at 3 locations with the boys, including by Jack’s car before they disappeared. They supposedly got into it and left after buying snacks. This could also explain the surprisingly good condition of Jack’s vehicle. I’m on board with the theory that they travelled there to meet someone and something went wrong either with that person or Joseph Shonz causing them to flee into the treeline. The flashlights perhaps were searching for the boys. It’s a stretch, but it’s possible the body of Gary Matthias is with those people in the red pickup. He was supposedly not seen with the boys at the store.

Taking into account the very driving very carefully thus very slowly the hypothermia might have already started while they were driving which might explain why they left the car. Hypothermia can mess with the mind and cognition. One possibility is also is that Gary might have relapsed into drugs during the trip and scared the boys to abandon the car and flee into the woods.

Great video guys, especially with the new stuff from Mopac audio. There’s another new theory that’s recently come to light regarding Joe Schons, the heart attack guy, and his history. Let’s just say, similar to the town bully guy, joes quite the manipulative character. Joesph Schons lived in berry creek with his wife Cindy and daughter. Joe was well known by his neighbours and even some sheriffs for being “ a wet brain alcoholic and a pathological liar”. Joes neighbours told Mopac audio that Joe would often get drunk and cause trouble at local bars before getting his VW beetle stuck and requiring assistance to get it free. Joe was also known for his temper. One time, after a small dispute with his neighbours, Joe pulled out a rifle and shot at his neighbours property whilst the neighbours kids were outside. On another occasion Joe and his wife’s property were raided by the Bute sheriffs department for growing/ selling drugs. Joes VW would often get vandalised because nobody in his neighbourhood liked him. Joes account of what he saw on Feb 24th 1978 has come into question many times. Joe changed his story so many times that even police took note at the time. Joe told police he got his car stuck on a rock but he then told the press that his car became stuck in snow. Joe claimed he stayed in his car for heat but the VW beetles were known for their air cooled engines and would only generate heat if the car was moving. Joe also claimed he walked back to a nearby lodge called mountain house which was around 5/6 miles away from where he got his car stuck AFTER he suffered a heart attack. The most suspicious thing regarding Joe is what he did/told people on the 25th of feb and 3rd of March. 2 people drove him to Oroville hospital from the lodge on the 25th of Feb and they claimed Joe stated “ A car had followed me so closely it caused my car to bottom out at the snow line”. On the 3rd of March, whilst in the hospital, Joe was being interviewed by a sheriff. The sheriff noted that Joe was moving around the room freely but when asked about the Yuba 5 Joe suddenly started acting strangely. Joe stated “ you think I know more about these men than I’m letting on don’t you?” The sheriff wanted to question him further but doctors refused claiming Joe might suffer another heart attack.

Love these, if you want to keep doing unsolved mysteries but don’t want them to all be depressing, you can do some thing like the DB Cooper episode where nobody knows what happened but at least nobody was hurt Or you could even venture out into the quasi-supernatural with all of the unsolved mysteries like Bigfoot and aliens and stuff

8:40 meds definitely aren't ALWAYS the answer but speaking as someone who takes medication for PTSD related anxiety, meds I never needed before I suffered a year long traumatic experience, they can definitely be a game changer for some. The issue isn't the medication, it's the reason the medicine is prescribed. Some doctors and parents just want to throw pills at a "problem" until it goes away but some doctors, parents and patients themselves know that a prescription can give someone just enough to otherwise manage their symptoms themselves. Don't fall into the Big Pharma trap, kids. Actively talk to your doctor and make sure that it's a doctor you trust if you think medication is the treatment for you and if you don't, if you have a trustworthy doctor, at least take the recommendation under advisement.

One important thing to remember while investing the yuba county 5 is that there are multiple individuals within the community that various community members refuse to name but claim know they committed or had a hand in their disappearance, aswell as the fact that yuba county in the 70s had a huge black market of weed and opiates with deep connections within the local and state police aswell as the forestry service due to much of the grow operations being done on federal land

Well going off that one guy who had to be dragged out of his burning house because he didnt want to be late to work the next day, I bet they got stuck and he just decided to walk home rather than miss the basketball game not realizing the danger he was in. Then the others either followed or tried to find him/stop him.

Very thankful for the addendum. I watched Wendigoon's video on this first, and because of the level of detail there, I had to keep my expectations low for most of this episode. However, the addendum directly stated who the primary suspect was, something that Wendigoon alluded to but didn't do, presumably out of respect for the interviewees intentions. Hearing about the bully, who is still an active part of the community that nobody wants to badmouth, ties everything together. Assembling stuff from both this and Wendigoon's video, there's a strong armed gang presence, probably dealing drugs, in the Yuba County. I do believe in people changing and being redeemed, but the bully jumping to pastorhood in jail after a WILD past few years reeks of getting into a position of power for social immunity. People not being willing to levy accusations till he's dead could be attributed to not throwing the tight community into chaos, but when that carries the undertone that everyone's _certain_ violence will ensue, *including the selectively competent police,* you gotta' draw a line somewhere. Obviously, I strongly recommend Wendigoon's video for anyone interested in more.
