Change is in the air. I can feel it. Watchmaking, like many things in life, goes through cycles of evolution, every now and then purging the old and ushering in the new. Around twenty years ago in 1999, Richard Mille was founded, and it changed watchmaking completely. In 2020, Aventi was founded, and it just might be about to do the same.

At the end this video says the watch is as much a statement to the watch making industry as it is a statement on the wrist. And to paraphrase a Rodgers and Hammerstein lyric, it's this: "Anything you can do better I can do almost as good." And that's a powerful as heck statement for us plebians who will never spend $200,000 on a watch. It means we can get something nearly as good for 1% of the cost. THAT is a powerful statement. Look at the Rolex and Patek replicas that are out there now: getting so good (both inside and out), that often experts have a hard time telling the difference, to the point that in some cases the replicas can threaten to overshoot their goal by being more finely done than the original -- not quite there yet, but in one video I saw, the point was raised that maybe a Patek or Rolex has slight "human touch" variation in the workmanship that the Chinese copy failed to replicate, literally microscopic details. The message is that the hyper-luxury outfits (Patek, IWC, Mille, the more premium Rolexes) are struggling to stay ahead of the Chinese imitators ever hotter on their trail. That's good for us, bad for the big shots. Something to celebrate.

If they watched this whole video, the comments wouldn't have been made as the video never praises the finishing nor compares it to high-end swiss companies. The ideology and the concept that the space is changing with Aventi being a forerunner of, is something to take note of, there is a reason why they have been so successful in sales and Aventi will continue to move in the right direction.

Has Richemont bought a stake in Aventi? Because I’m struggling to see how this watch deserves any of the lofty game-changing claims being made in this video. It’s a cheap movement, placed in a poorly designed case and finished to an incredibly low standard. I suppose it could represent the final nail in the coffin of the tourbillon, however I doubt that as much finer examples than this will continue to showcase that it’s still a beautiful, if redundant, complication if executed well.

since you're not the only one to mention this, and i genuinely want to learn about these things - what makes folks say that this watch is "poorly designed"? anything specific you saw that lead you to that conclusion? Also, curious about your comment re:tourbillon. I always thought of them as a bit of a "because we CAN" type of project. An exercise in purely pushing the functional limits. Of course, unlike most of the examples i can think of (mostly smartphones doing this) it never really caught on fully, or died fully. Generally though, is a tourbillon of any value other than the sheer complexity and "that's insane" aspect of it (if that)?
@StuninRub
@StuninRub 3 жыл бұрын
@@TjPhysicist A tourbillon is not even that complicated to make. The reason why people are shitting on this is because the hand which made these watches are not white therefore inferior. Except it's 99.99% there at 1/20th the cost.
@5naxalotl
@5naxalotl 3 жыл бұрын
@@StuninRub absolutely. there's nothing technically impressive about this watch. a tourbillon is less technically demanding than a chronograph. it's less likely to lead to a malfunction than a day-date complication. but it _does_ tend to be exclusive to a high-end mechanism, if only because people expect their tourbillon watch to be supremely accurate, and that accuracy does not come from the tourbillon. the game changer here is that the chinese are prepared to puncture the myth that tourbillons must be so expensive you have to be in the super-rich club. and if so much of the expense weren't absorbed by the case, the chinese are perfectly capable of demonstrating they can make an excellent $2000, or even $20000, movement. *of course* the movement is not at the standard of other $5000 watches! and although aventi are stretching themselves to put out an affordable sapphire case ("i'll take things that look acrylic but made from something far superior for 5000, alex"), the other "game changer", which is actually the steady tick of technological change and the inevitable honest pricing of it, is the recent availability of exotic ceramic materials and high tech machine tools for frivolous uses ... again, largely thanks to china. personally, i'm pleased that a bunch of watch geeks will be able to delay their new car purchase and buy the tourbillon they never dreamed they could afford. but of course the novelty will wear off and, sadly, the ultra-rich market will evaporate, and they will struggle to find a watch that so instantly conveys how very rich you are to someone who doesn't recognise watch brands. honestly, i'm heartbroken for the rich. they'll probably have to go back to covering everything in ghastly diamonds, the true measure of someone who cannot grasp that they have run out of expensive items to aspire to

While I can appreciate the engineering behind this piece, I can't force myself to like any sapphire case watch. They all seem cheap plastic things and in this specific case, the movement itself lacks a lot of finishing with all those not beveled cuts (2:13 over the letter N and 2:44 between the mainspring barrel and the keyless) and residue next to the jewels... No, thanks. Even tho, I've to say, for the price it can be a great value.

This strikes me as a piece that is intended more for fans of unique forms and functions, not just microscopic hand finishing or implied value from centuries old heritage. I, too, have plenty of watches with better finish than this, but they don't strike an emotional response as soon as I look at them. This, on the other hand does. I have spent a couple grand but never $5k on a watch; however, if I ever do, I want it to be something special. No more boring round dials with hidden movements. Thankfully everyone is different and we all have different tastes, you can’t please everyone all of the time especially the purists. Respect where it’s due Aventi are bringing to market a watch which is unique (it’s not an RM!) with technology which has become more accessible and materials that are sexy and new. The owners themselves wear their hearts on their sleeves and are as transparent as their sapphire Crystal watch. They also listen to their customers even implementing changes during the production process based on their feedback! This isn’t a $100k watch it’s a $5k watch and the Blue Sapphire a $10k watch so please keep perspective. You heard in the review that margins are tight these guys aren’t taking the piss with their pricing! Hats of to Hannu and his team for creating this and the stunning A10 .... who knows where their imagination will go next, personally I can’t wait to see... 👍🏼❤️

@@AventiWatch your finishing can't even match watches that are a quarter of your price point. I know establishing a new brand can be very difficult and undestandably there will be mistakes made. But that is no excuse for the movement looking like it does. But maybe people who collect watches are not your target audience and instead you are targeting the consumers who buy brands like DW, mvmt or other not so impressive watches. If that's the case then keep on rocking but never compare yourself to proper Swiss or German brands as it will cause more damage to your image than do any good.

Well, at least it uncovered a little lie about, the RM with the sapphire case, saying that takes a significant amount of man hours to make one case, they were the first to make one i guess, so instead of making more watches with a lower price, they made just 6 or so for 2 3 million each!! smart move RM

Hey it’s Hannu the founder - I see a lot of comments ... Hate and love ... I’m reading all the comments but need some help... I have a few questions for those reading... Please reply so I can improve the watch and brand. 1. What type of finishing should we use? There were a handful of marks on this piece and under the insane macro you can see them - but I’ve seen worse and some even from the most prestigious brands. We opted for the safe option of finishing but I think we could achieve a lot more with a different type of finishing (currently is brushed mainly to have good consistency). Under naked eye the movement is extremely clean and has impressed many critics and supporters we’ve met with.. It’s clear I have some work to do to improve the movement - because my goal is to earn the respect of the harshest watch critics so that’s why I’m here reading every comment and will make changes today. 2. If you could choose a Swiss movement partner to work with who would you choose? Vaucher, Chronode or Soprod? 3. Which type of movement or module would you want to see next: Satellite (urwerk), Swiss made Tourbillon or Jumping hour (discs)? Few points to keep in mind: 1. I had the option to use a high end Swiss tourbillon movement but the barrier to entry was so high (over $1m investment for custom movement and over $500,000 for minimum order of an existing movement) I wanted to use a tourbillon as I always wanted one - and it fits to our whole “a supercar on your wrist” angle - the v12 of the watchmaking world... 2. Aventi is all about ‘having’.. To have something that is normally unobtainable ... So the price point is important for me .. There’s simply no other watch at our price point that compares - Sapphire crystal is extremely difficult to work with .. Most people don’t realise that there is a high breakage rate - so this means that it could take up to 3 pieces or more to make one perfect case - sometimes there are bubbles ... Sometimes the material cracks ... 3. Aventi is constantly evolving. We will improve each week - we are only 5 months old and fighting giants. So it means a lot to get support and criticism to push us even more! Thanks !

Found it :) Nice note about "Aventi is about to "have"", I'm italian and I studied latin back when I was younger, so the root into the "habeo" (to have) makes me smile. Necessary premise: as I wrote upper, I'm more of a traditionalist when it comes to watches, and about half of my collections is made by so called "super replicas" (not the ones you find on DHGate... Those with ETA clone movements or gen Miyota ones, around 400$, with 316L/Ti/Ceramic/real carbon fiber/bronze cases, sapphire crystal with anti-reflection coatings and so on), so I'm not against Chinese movements (especially those from Sea-Gull or PTS or Hangzhou) per se. Also I mod my watches and service/repair them when/if needed. This said, let's come to the questions, with a final suggestion you may or may not take. 1) it depends from the price and customers you're targeting. As from my comment upper, at the beginning I thought this was a 30k$+ watch and therefore I found the problems I put in the comment totally not compatible with price. Then I've seen they're priced at 5k and I added the last sentence about value for money. High level of finishing (see Patek or AL&S) is extremely expensive and, for a new brand, that's a put off. But saving on the machining of sapphire case (which is more something for football players and rappers... As RM watches are too) can free funds to pursue quality in other aspects. Check out Ming watches for instance. They are kind of perfection in every detail. 2) can't answer this, but it's good the choice isn't ETA or Sellita: they are too ubiquitous, too common.Vast majority of people don't know movement brands apart ETA, Sellita and the in-house ones like Rolex/JLC etc, so a well made (and reliable) movement from Switzerland without a common name is already "exotic enough" to be interesting. Also, even if I know Chinese movements can be good, there's still a stigma on them from those that never worked on such movements (and sometimes there is a good reason for that), enough to put off a lot of potential customers just based on that. Also "Swiss Made" is still a very good value, if written on the dial... 3) again it depends of the customer targeted. A flashy watch for rappers should have something super robust as they just don't know and care on how to treat a watch and anything fragile will end up broken in your support laboratory. A more classical refined watch around the 5k$ could have annual calendar for instance. Or a monopusher chrono. In the end it's not the complication that does the watch, it's the design and the details for connoisseurs, the design and marketing (and eventually the "swiss made" thing) for the general public. Just look how much of those crappy DW they sold out there... Also consider that with 5k you can have a wonderfully finished Grand Seiko, which is a guarantee (but yes, totally a different piece in terms of presence of "flashiness"). I think your inspiration now are crazy super expensive watches like RMs, but take care with that: if you end up to be considered "the poorman RM" it will not work well, like it wasn't working well for "the poorman Rolex" (aka Tudor) until they found a proper lineup and become a distinguished brand with its own character, or for the hundreds homages around (which I hate: they seems like wannabe watches... Either go gen or go super replica, but these wannabe things seems just sad to me). My suggestion: why don't you (or some of your people) try to join a watch forum to collect some ideas? Polish Gerlach watch producer did that too few years ago, and they're going fine. Even some replica forum where you can have some different point of view (they are real watch lovers for both genuine pieces -some have impressive collections of gens and replica ones too, in general they are *much* more into details, movements technicalities -as often they need to put their hands into their watches-, and waaaaaay less snob than genuine watch forums). For instance www . rwg . bz (remove the spaces), just beware they can be a bit harsh in their comments :)

Great start. Maybe the next model can have a sapphire case which is less complicated to manufacture. A simpler design. Movements rarely look good under a macro lens, but one in a transparent case will always be judged more harshly. Even if the marks cannot be seen with the naked eye, at this price people expect a better finish. Good luck.

Alex-GenTLe Thanks for the feedback! You wrote you mod your watches- what do you mean by that? 1: yes we’re definitely improving this aspect - the point of the watch is to show value as discussed ... 2: You should look into Chronode they are amazing and relatively unknown but produce for some incredible brands. 3: We never said anything about inspiration from RM - we don’t relate to them not claim ourselves. The relationship in this video is to highlight disruption - that’s what we share with them. Thanks for the suggestion - we are quite close now with some major watch influencers who advise us and also have created an insider group for some customers who are collectors and in the watch industry. I pose the question here to get extra feedback to make sure our finger is on the pulse. Again thank you very much for your comments and I’ll definitely take them on board! Cheers, H

@@hannusiren314 when I say modding for instance... I reshaped the case of a rep drsd Rolex 1665 to make it matching better the shape of the gen, reworking the crownguards and the lugs. Then I enlarged the holes of the springbars at 1.25mm with a cobalt drill to have them accepting gen-like springbars, I bleached the aluminium insert to give it a slight discoloration, I took out the 2836 inside, bought an old 2846 from an ebay sale of a mechanical Swatch, serviced both the movements and from both made a tall pinion 2846 low beat to have the watch beating at 21.6kBph (gen was 19.8kBph, the 2836 is a 28.8), I replaced the tube (and re-tap the hole at 3mm fine thread) and put a new "low height" crown from Athaya, a new plexy from Clarks parts which has a better shape, found a proper black on grey "open 6 and 9" date wheel overlay and placed it properly on the 2846 date wheel to perfectly center the date window, repolished the parts worked and tested it to 6bar of pressure (passed in flying colors)... This sort of things. I love working on watches in my spare time, I find it relaxing, and in the end I've always been a problem solver for my normal work and my other hobbies, so I love this stuff, even tho sometimes I need to take a break (i.e. when the click spring jumps away for 5 consecutive times while I'm reassembling a movement, or when the tilting pinion of a 7750 doesn't want to stay inside the clutch lever...)

Show me another watch with a tourbillion movement and a pure sapphire case under $10k and maybe I'll care what you think about the comparison. You want incredible surface finishing? Great, spend 30 times as much on a Patek Philippe, and you won't get sapphire case or tourbillion movement, but you will be able to crow about the surface finishing. You missed the point. The point is that the kind of watches you are talking about, with incredible surface finishing, are designed for the super rich and nobody else, this Aventi is closer to what an average joe can afford.

Cool video. I have been collecting watches for over 30 years. I own and have owned some of the most sought after name brands pieces (Rolex, Patek, AP, Panerai). I always enjoy seeing different ideas spring up in the industry. The watch collecting is an amazing hobby. One thing I’ve learned over the years is that ideas and companies will come and go. But for me as a collector, I’ve learned to buy what I like. I remember buying a Jacob & Co. 5 TimeZone watch back in the 90’s, my watch friends said that the company was a joke and was a flash in the pan. Jacob had a vision that none of the watch world could see. I remember when Casio G-Shock was a $10 watch today you can pay over $1k for a Casio. I remember when RM introduced those square watches that didn’t seem to catch on. I feel this company has come to the industry to not be like the industry, but to introduce the industry to a new day of doing things. For only being less than 6 months old, they seem to be creating a lot of buzz. Both positive and negative. But as we say in the industry if people are talking you’re gaining interest. I see a lot of similarities with another famous watch company that is marketing primarily through internet influencers and with this "affordable luxury" BS. I guess the real quality of the watches is the same (only in this case, it's not $20 Wish watches sold for $150, it's $500 chinese tourbillions sold for $2-5k). I'm just saying, but that movement is suspiciously similar to a 3450A Movement from PTS, which you can probably get it for under 500usd in bulk. Regarding its performance, I found the following specs from PTS catalogue: Function: 2 hands Size : Ø33.00mm Thickness: 5.30mm Accuracy: +/-25 seconds/day Price: 750 USD Running Time: ~72hours Frequency: 28,800bph Source: www.ptsresources.com/watch_tourbillon_01.htm If they are using this PTS movement (which is highly likely), it would be a disgrace to call that premium time keeping! That accuracy is just total trash. I'm not sure about the sapphire case, but 5k for that movement is way too over-priced. Just think about it, for 5k, you can get a used omega speedmaster or a new grand seiko snowflake, which both keep accurate time and will last you a life time.

I’d love to see how brands like Richard Mille or Aventi would approach making a “dress” watch. Something small but with the crazy modern design.

Simple : they don't, they're not in that market. I love this channel, but the man is wrong on that : they make extremly overpriced watches for shallow millionaires and billionaires who wants to show they have money, and speculators who'll resell them to the ones i've just mentionned for an even higher price. Watch collectors who appreciate these brands are very very rare.

Well, the execution of that movement falls short at many places. And is that some kind of debries inside that clumps around the jewels? I think in this case it would have been better to set the price at around USD 10,000.- and have a movement that adheres to high horology standards.

@@AventiWatch How did you allow this piece to leave the factory?
@Watch-Crazy
@Watch-Crazy 3 жыл бұрын
@@AventiWatch And thank you for taking my comments well! I agree in that there isn't a comparable watch in the price range, and in part that is because of the crazy prices achieved by the likes of Jacob & Co, and the fact no-one else has embarked on this as yet.. I'm also very aware of the sapphire crystal manufacturing/growing and cutting techniques used past and present, and how much easier and cost effective it is to achieve than even 10 years ago. The top tier movements which I'm assuming are from the Tianjin Seagull watch factory are excellent, but are they as good as JLC who supply to the likes of Patek and Audemars? On the other hand you do have the likes of Rolex that only up until recently in the grand scheme of things only started to produce their own movements, and prior to that Gay Fréres made their watch bracelets. But currently there is a vast difference to the Aventi, Rolex and JLC, and that is for the same money from a horological perspective JLC is superior as it is high horology, whereas Rolex is good horology and Tianjin seagull unless you are from China or Russia currently sits well below both of these, rightly or wrongly, I don't know enough about their tourbillions. TBH the thing that drew me to comment was the quality control, I definitely can see a market for these, I have a few friends who would love them, particularly the titanium coloured versions, but at these prices I would have assumed that the finish would be superior to stand out from the crowd, and make Aventis additional mark, unfortunately that was clearly not the case. Sorry.

This is a terrible product. The idea that what's being done with this watch is somehow analogous to what Richard Mille did is pretty funny. It looks like a cheap knock-off... because that's what it is. Really, what is the point of putting a cheap, off-the-shelf, low-quality, Chinese movement in badly-designed, ugly case, and attaching a strap that cost a few cents? The attempted hype about this brand that we've seen from a handful of desperate wannabe social media influencers isn't going to create much demand in the real world.

It's cool if our design isn't to your liking, naturally everyone has their own perceptions of taste. The goal with this piece was to bring our unique case shape to market in a material that was previously thought obtainable only at the upper echelons of watch collection. We've managed to do that and are more than happy with the result. Thanks for watching the video.

Like any watch that isn't precious metal is worth anything in raw material, or worth even close to its retail cost in build hours and craftsmanship. Rolex pumps out tons of watches per year mainly machine made... But nobody would say anything about the costs to manufacture those compared to the prices charged. They're a mass produced machine made product, made from a few pennies worth of steel. They probably cost $100 to manufacture and they charge multi thousands for them. Not sure why its fine for one brand but not fine for this brand.

I thought this video would be for the Aventi watch, instead I learnt so many things about RM! Unless someone wants to promote Aventi as an RM(?). But even when I thought the next sentence could be referring to Aventi, then RM is back again in the game. A strange video that could have been shorter if you remove all the RM details, which belong to another video for another watch (i.e. RM). Or could have been longer, if you told us more about Aventi watch. Gosh, 2/3 of this video is full of RM stuff. I had to watch 8 minutes of RM information to come to Aventi.
