The game gets bullshit hard around the third level which means you gotta start grinding through the old levels and it SUCKS because this game has a ton going for it

I did a Hard Run of this and loaded it to my channel. I think grinding melee weapons is more important than characters, so try to keep your favorite weapons from breaking or stolen permanently. There are some few extra game mechanics which the game doesn't explain: - Ultimate Field: Press any attack button + long range attack button simultaneously. Your character will unleash an energy aura which damages all enemies in the room. Using this attack will add 1/3 to the MT meter, so don't use it too often. - Counter: While guarding, press any attack button during an enemy's attack. If successful, you character will flash and retaliate with an invincible attack. The counter attack also works on enemies immune to melee attacks (good for saving ammo). You can cheese out super-aggressive enemy mobs or some bosses by just countering. - Attack or Dodge cancelling: Not really a mechanic, but switching any weapon in the pause menu during your character's melee attacks or dodge can cancel their current frame. For example, switching Amber's weapon during her dodge animation will make her recover faster than normal. You can also continue melee combo chains by switching weapons after each combo. My personal favorite weapons barring Rare ones: - Amber: Thundersword. Kadie can use this as well. Can be bought from the merchant and gets good ATK power after each level up. Lightning is a good element which can easily stun enemies for good mob control. Also, about 50% enemies are weak to lightning which the post-game Extra Stage has tons of. If you can't get any Rare swords for Amber, this is the next best option. Bring two +20 Thunderswords to the Extra Stage for an easy time. - Tokio: Thunderbolt. Same reasons as the Thundersword but this weapon is drop or craft only. Amber can use this as well. For long range, his Flame Grenade Launcher is pretty busted. High attack power, good range, and AoE for mobs. Also, he can dodge-roll right after shooting for better coverage. Did I mentioned it can also be upgraded for higher attack and different elements? - Kadie: Personally like the Flare Knife for her which Amber can also use. I have a better time with her equipped with a Knife than her other weapons, and the Flare Knife is really good unless you can find a Rare Knife with unique traits.

I remember this game. I got it as a birthday present and it was quite fun, best part of it was you could farm infinite exp by doing a P+K combo and then P while its midair so it falls shoulder first, from there you just time it with P every time it falls shoulders first since exp mostly drops from combos rather than defeated enemies.

I swear if I ever make a game with an opening text crawl, it’s going to be it one that the player presses a button to progress.

Crimson Sea 2, you won't be disappointed.

If you want another pretty darn good RPG/beat em up, then check out Dusk Diver for the PS4 or Switch. It's sort of like if Persona was a beat em up. One might even call it a hidden gem.

I heard this game was kinda made to be a stand alone version of tobal's and eirngeiz dungeon modes

The first time i saw this game was from a review from Xplay on G4; when the TV channel was about games, and not about Cops

If I remember this the only other game you can unlock new outfits from Darkstalkers for the 3 characters. If I made beat'em up rpg game, I would go for the 2.5D design something like Klonoa on the ps1, or Xenogears or the Strider 2 look. And make the game open world like River city ransom, but make the gameplay and combat be like Streets of rage 3 and Charlie murder. and able to equip things something like symphony of the night or something very old school like diablo or eye of the beholder equipment layout.

I owned this game at age 13 and got it at the swamp meet for $28 along with nightshade and the Simpsons the video game.

Seeing the title reminded me of Crimson Sea 2, a solid PS2 action game no one remembers, but was pretty well received at the time. You should give that one a go, or the first one maybe, but that one was an xbox exclusive so I never tried it
