I'm a little late watching this, but as an EMT who often arrives on scenes like this one with cops/detectives/etc, I can confirm that my place of work does provide a certain amount of free therapy to all of us first responders. What's scary, and something I certainly find the longer I work there, is that only a small amount of people will actually accept it. We are encouraged not to dismiss our feelings but we do it anyway. It's one of the worst parts of the job, learning to live with those ghosts you couldn't even begin to save. I can't imagine what those who discovered this scene went through, especially her poor mother.
@jackiechild9740

If it's being offered for free everyone should seek therapy, if having to deal with anything like this case. You need someone to talk to that isn't connected to it in any way. Trauma will have a negative impact on your life, whether it is current or historical. It's easier to deal with when it's current... after some time it is so much harder

First responders I know chose to not have the help offered because of the stigma the think they'll face from peers, wanting to feel like they have it together, and fear that the therapist could recommend they take time off work (to the boss). People seek help when it feels safe. A system where you could lose your income and reputation is a big ask for these folks who are already absorbing so much.

When it comes to perpetrators with traumatic backgrounds, it’s okay to feel bad for the child version of them but it’s important to hold the adult version of them accountable for their actions. But accountability can also be done with empathy and consideration of their traumatic background, which Bailey does so well.

When I became pregnant with my 3rd child it was a total surprise bc i was on birth control. I jokingly told a friend that she could keep my baby. My husband (at the time) made it clear that i was joking but just a few weeks later this woman started buying baby clothes!!! We noped right out of that and moved away! I am from the same county as Lisa Montgomery and had an infant daughter when this event occurred. Typically the statute of limitations for average crimes (statute of limitations being the amount of time after a crime that a person can begin a trial over) is anywhere from 1-6 years in the US, however higher offenses like child abuse have anywhere from 30 years to no limitations for opening a case/beginning a trial. Some of the states have laws specifying that the statute is unlimited if the survivor/victim filed a complaint within 1-2 years of abuse. Hope that explains it.

Phantom pregnancy are very very real and extremely traumatic. After I had a miscarriage I went through a phantom pregnancy. I had phantom kicks, gained weight, mood swings, started producing breast milk, and even though I was going to an OB and therapy I started believing maybe I was pregnant. It was only 3 months after losing a baby at 7 weeks. Maybe baby was a twin, maybe I got pregnant again, or maybe I didn't lose baby at all. I also didn't take a pregnancy test because I didn't want the truth. Idk how to fully explain it, but once I came to the realization there was no baby, about 6 weeks later or 4.5 months after the loss of baby, it was like I lost another baby and went through another miscarriage. Positive ending, we have 3 beautiful girls. 🥰

Instead of putting so much energy on locking up and executing people I wish the focus can be shifted to *helping* the human race so we don’t have to bury another person and imprison or execute one, for Pete’s sake when will this country help the children! Fact is you could rehabilitate Lisa to feel remorse she is permanently damaged, that remorse and empathy was supposed to be demonstrated to her when she was a beautiful innocent little girls, fact is she still is a little girl always will be she stopped growing up when her innocence was stolen, it serves no purpose to keep the system the way it is, but there is no hope in this country is there. this empathy we all can’t help but feel for Lisa WILL serve a purpose one day. It will be the drive that motivates us to PROTECT the children so we’d potentially be saving lives.

It's hard to even define "at fault" clearly, here. We don't know what's going on in people's heads when they are that severely damaged over the course of their entire lives, the formative years in particular. Who knows how much control she had of her decision making? The prefrontal cortex isn't even fully developed until we're 25. What if due to physical and psychological trauma combined with substance abuse, all for YEARS and long before 25, that part of her brain responsible for decision making just NEVER developed adequately? I don't think premeditation proves anything though it's the best measure we really have... If she was dissociated from reality and had multiple forms of brain damage, that premeditation was done by a mind playing by rules we don't understand. She could never continue to live among other people but if she didn't want to die, I don't see any way we can determine (beyond a reasonable doubt) that she was ever capable of making a decision that warrants execution.

Hi, Bailey! When I was pregnant waaaaaay back in 1975 we moved into a new neighbourhood. The lady across the street was also pregnant. Or so she said. As I kept getting bigger and bigger she did not. Finally it became apparent she was not pregnant. I was terrified. If she thought she was pregnant, why couldn't she think my baby was hers? Everybody pooh-poohed me. Remember - 1975. True crime was not such a popular topic, no internet, etc. The only person who thought I could be right was the VON who visited me (home nurse). Anyway, the lady had a breakdown and ended up in the psych ward where she called me every week to come and get her. We moved away shortly after and I don't know what happened to her. But as the years go by and I have heard similar stories to this one, I know I was right to be careful

There is also another argument I’ve seen about why we should humanize bad people: if you go around thinking that bad people are monsters rather than humans, then you don’t believe that you or any of your friends/family/acquaintances etc. can be “monsters” or do the sort of bad things that “monsters” do. So like, anyone who thought like that could’ve seen Lisa Montgomery and been like “no way, I know Lisa, she’s not a MONSTER, she would never do something like that” and people inadvertently DO wind up excusing bad behavior because they don’t believe their friend is a monster. I guess Bailey gets a lot of hate for trying to explain where these horrible people come from, but honestly, I think she has the right idea. These people don’t just come out of the ground, or fall from the sky-they’re PEOPLE, who came to be people in the standard way. By othering people like this, we close off the ability to maybe solve future problems of why people are like this, after we make more advancements in neuroscience, psychology etc. and can really start nipping these things in the bud.

I’ve watched this video a few times, but this is the first time I’m thinking - though she most likely wasn’t in pain due to extreme adrenaline, when she had regained consciousness I bet she had realized her baby had been cut out of her body and she knew exactly what was going on. And she truly couldn’t do anything about it. Imagine that.

I like hearing the back stories because it’s where you realize how much the state, judges, and police also failed. Like yes, the criminal did something awful but there’s always hundreds of ways that authority figures also did awful things. These true crime are the outliers but imagine how many other people are going through something similar

Bailey to answer your question. I'm a crime scene investigator. There are internal counselors. Some are given evaluations after traumatic events. However, if I'm being honest, some scenes never go away and some times it becomes too much. It's very awful to see things like this.

Agreed! As a first responder (SAR) I find that some things, the shock and panic feelings get less and less over time with help, but the images stay. I have one case (my first body recovery) that pops into my head every so often and I’m thankful to be at a point where when I think about it, it’s more just a matter of fact “yes that happened” feeling or acknowledgement rather than feelings of grief or obsession anymore. CISM REALLY helps though and I’m super thankful to have an excellent CISM program in the province where I live.
