I was extremely lucky to have been given a copy of GW's BOFA, in this video I take a quick look in the box, then ramble for ages about what I plan to do with it.

That’s brilliant! I just finally started painting my set myself, long overdue, so I’ll be following your project closely. Love your channel, also starting with Epic Waterloo and your painting videos are a great help!

Thanks for sharing this Stewart! As a lifelong Tolkien fan with an extensive LOTR and Hobbit book collection and movie collection, I absolutely love this! I will make an attempt to get a copy of this, even if I have to pay Ebay prices. I remember back when GW released this, and I should have grabbed it then. But I was too busy with the 25mm scale LOTR and Hobbit GW games. But maybe I could try to get a hold of the copy of just the rulebook, and then use the Copplestone and Pendraken for all the minis. Terrain seems fairly universal, I've already got rivers and roads cut to these widths for Epic Scale, and I think 15mm trees would work fairly well for this. 10mm scale is so great for this iconic battle! Awesome!!

I’d been keeping an eye on on eBay for ages, sometimes something a closer to a ‘bargain’ comes up. I was looking for just a rule book like you’ve suggested, but I couldn’t find one, not even a pdf. But if you can the Copplestone range is more than good enough for the miniatures.

Sweet! Very cool. I’m completely addicted to these super tiny fighting men since I got into Epic. Would loooove to see a rendition of Helms Deep. Favorite scene of mine from the movies. Glorious!

I did some quick research on this. Wow, I didn't realize it came out way back in 2005! Also, from looking at various photos of the box contents, it appears that the modular hill pieces it came with are identical to the 28mm scale "modular gaming hill" that GW sold way back for the larger scale Warhammer Fantasy Battle. Kind of interesting that they multi-purposed a terrain kit that served in games of two different scales.

Yeah I guess with the cost of plastic production it makes sense to use existing stuff where possible.

Great stuff. The existence of this game had totally passed me by, so great to hear about it and have a look at the contents. I like the Warmaster system although not played it much. Will be great to see how this project develops over the next couple of years. 👍

I've really no idea why I never bought this game. Love LOTR's and was big into Warmaster back in the day. I wish they would re-release this game. The idea of the mixed campaign with 10mm and 28mm sound like loads of fun. Definitely would need to be a weekend thing though, as that type of thing takes a lot of time. Look forward to hearing more about how this develops.

Cheers Don. Would be amazing to see it come back, can’t ever see it sadly. Warmaster is alive as well, but most people are using it to play old school armies, or recreate the armies around at the end of Warhammer Fantasy - have a look a the stuff Excellent Miniatures and Forest Dragon are doing (make sure your wallet is not nearby 😂).

Rather late to this bu justto say that Chris Wakes (Wakes Emporium) is doing a load of LoTR stls in 10mm for 3D printing. Very nice!

I'm sure you're up to speed on all the other stuff, but Forest Dragon (as you mention), Cromarty Forge (got loads of John's stuff and it's excellent), KMFP, Green Skin Miniatures, MiniRat Studio, Red Nebular, Ankylo Miniatures, and various others are all banging out amazing stuff. As I keep telling my wife when my Patreon bill arrives 😱. What we really need is someone to do the same at 10mm (and hence re-scalable for 8-18mm) for Napoleonics. Lots of nice 28mm but not too much in the smaller scales (and some of what there is seems very pricey). Thanks as ever for the vids. Very interesting.

@@MiniatureRealms Yes, I hope so. Once you've bought the printer, sworn at it repeatedly, had it die on you repeatedly, obsessed about scale and had divorce proceedings served . . . it's all so cheap thereafter!

I've had this video queued up to watch for ages now but just not found the time - really glad I did now - such a good watch! I've got a box of this in the attic waiting in the 'one day' pile - no chance of me painting it anytime soon but this has got me thinking... I may be in touch ;-) Can't wait to see how this develops, I've always loved Warmaster so the combination of a great game with a great IP is hard to resist :-) - Damian

A game that was produced 15 years ago...that's just not fair, but I'm a big Tolkien fan so I'll definitely watch the videos. Now if I can only find the core game.

I’m going to be doing some research into how easy it is for others to start playing without resorting to crazy eBay prices. I think Copplestone miniatures and a copy of regular Warmaster/Warmaster Ancients will probably suffice, as I think army lists will be be easy enough to come by. I found some written for all the ‘Film factions’ a couple of years back in a Facebook group, so will have to try and dig them out.

I'[l never understand why companies sit on material they spent money developing, and that they still have the license for. It's not like they are making any money off the higher prices charged by resellers. I might go the 3d printed route, I've got the printer, and there look to be a fair number of 10mm fantasy designs available.

I really need to get into 3d printing, I’m finding more and more stuff I’d like to print all the time. There’s some amazing ‘Warhammer style’ Warmaster armies from Forest Dragon and Excellent Minis, I’d love to find something the same quality with a Lotr theme.

I must admit I’m always tempted to recreate my love of Fantasy through Warmaster, I love what Forest Dragon and Excellent minis have released. I’m not sure we will see anything from GW though, at least not for a very long time at best. I think Specialist Games are more likely to do an Epic 40k release to link with the success of Titanicus. With the ‘Old World’ project bringing back ‘Fantasy’ I can’t see them doing a version of Warmaster now. That’s a shame, as would have been a cool way to bring back ‘square(d) bases/rank and flank’, Warmaster with all the new minis and fluff they’re working on for the old world, and not in a scale to compete against AOS.

@@MiniatureRealms With the old gang now running Warlords I suspect there are major issues with GW reprinting games created by the competition now. They may not even own the rights even if they do own the IP.

GW retains all the IP to their games, so I don’t see that being an issue, they even stopped crediting writers/artists/designers/painters for a while, though that’s creeping back now. It would be a business decision, and sadly (and correctly) they wouldn’t see Warmaster being a money maker ahead of other projects right now. Doesn’t mean never though, we will see more Specialist Games come back, but I think there will be loads further ahead in the queue and we likely won’t see it.

@@MiniatureRealms BFG was supposed to be on the short list as of a few years ago but we are still waiting. I figure if they ever do put it out again they will change scale/timeline/models or what ever to make us not be able to use the old stuff.

Yep for sure, it will be ‘re-imagined’ and shiny enough to tempt people to buy new stuff. They did a great job with Adeptus Titanicus, I bought into it, but I prefer infantry and tanks, so the game lost some of its ‘scale’ for me. When they do Epic I’m not sure I’ll be able to resist, and they will, I’ve no doubt it will be the next big thing to expand on AT.

Planning to get my bfa painted soon,picked up a few more stands to bulk up the gobbo side so look forward to watching your progress on this,the Copplestone figures are superb and plan to add some to the 10mm collection,trouble is iv already finished over a 1000 figures in 28mm for lotr so feel like doing it all again in a different scale.

Stuart, I’m in and will have to bring my BoFA set back to the painting table to finish it. I think you’ll need a copy of the main Warmaster rules to do a Helms Deep siege as from memory the BoFA rule book is an abridged version. I’ve got Copplestone cavalry to build out the Rohan force beyond the plastic men in the box - which I suppose would be Lake-town/Dale in the BOFA setting. I was fortunate with my set off eBay in 2012 as it came with all the metals, including Smaug, but not the price tag that they can achieve today. My four regiments of elven cavalry are worth more than my pension😉 If you’re looking for ents then I went the Reapermini Saproling route, they match the scale fantastically and don’t have the comic look that some ent models can have. Looking forward to seeing how this little project builds.

I’ve got a set of the standard warmaster rules (the community has an updated one as well now I think), I’ve found a coup,e of sources of army lists for Lotr Warmaster armies as well, will have to dig them out, think I found them in once of the Facebook groups. I’ll check out those Reaper minis, I can’t picture them off hand so may not have seen them before. I’m looking forward to getting started, but it will be a slow one compared to some other projects.

I've just seen this video and... how lucky you are! Indeed, this set is really expensive... I am actually searching on internet for 10mm fantasy minis... for curiosity (I have a lot of projects beside) and I saw that Magister Militum has a 10mm fantasy range with orcs, dwarves, goblins, dragons, etc etc... May worth having a look I think.

Yeah I rushed bits of it, and other parts I’d change completely. I’ve got some plans to fix some of the things I don’t like. Love the Zorpazorp videos, amazing Minas Tirith build.

Nice, I have 2 copies of this along with a set of wood elf Cavalry and Bolg's guard. There are interestingly some errors in the rule book including the rules for support being totally missing.

I think it’s something that might be cool, but probably not for a while. I fully interpret cycle back to this project, I’m just busy with others right now, but when I do a deep delve into the book and rules could be fun.

Amazing man I'm so jellouse, I bought a set when it released but I cant for the life of me find what I've done with it. Small scale lotr is definatly something I want to dabble in on the channel but dont think itll be GW as I cant afford that price tag lol. The Helms deep idea sounds incredible, will there be footage? Will follow the podcast too!

I definitely plan on making quite a few videos on this, mostly on this channel, but some stuff shared with the podcast as well. The Copplestone miniatures are a nice way of doing small scale lotr a bit cheaper that eBay prices for GW stuff. You will have to keep an eye out on the competition for the spare set when I run itz

@@warpaint9385 there's a patreon called forest dragon miniatures that do some great 10mm minis for these guys and on thingiverse there's a bunch of 10mm empire and wood elf miniatures for free. I've just painted up a 10mm chaos army from forest dragon and I'm hooked on the scale now

It's crazy that GW went to all this effort with plastic frames to just ditch the concept within a year. The real shame is the 10mm audience has grown a whole lot since then, and the pretty generic plastic frames from this would sell well now if they were just repackaged.

Yeah it was a strange one. I don’t know an awful lot about what the plan was at the time, I wonder if it was always meant to be a limited release, maybe just making use of a license they had before it ran out or contractually obliged to do something. They obviously were focusing mostly on the New Line/WBros license at the time as well. I can’t see them doing anything with it now though.

@@MiniatureRealms I think GW got in trouble with New Line for releasing this game. The license for Five armies is granted by Tolkien Enterprises and there isn't a mention of the New Line license that the LotR game used. New Line had not yet expressed plans to do a Hobbit series of films but I'm sure they had some option open on it to lock it down and didn't want conflicting designs for characters and races coming out. You'll notice that there is not art or photos shared from the New Line stuff in Five Armies and that the mini design aesthetic in Five Armies certainly doesn't match up to anything in the LotR films. They probably were allowed to move out all the stock but not reprint anything. Remember that LotR is what saved GW in in the early 2000s and made the company rich. They had more money than they ever had before and it lead to the bloated company it is today and changed the entire outlook on their mass appeal and marketing. There's a Rick Priestley video interview somewhere on youtube that goes over lots of the LotR profit deal.

Yeah that’s probably right, and even if New Line/WB didn’t mind, it would have been silly to compete with themselves, and have slightly different licenses on two different games from the same universe. They definitely focused on the right one from a business point of view.

@@MiniatureRealms Rick Priestley had plans to expand the range too. Notice that it's titled Great Battles of Middle Earth. He had to beg GW to get the LotR license in the first place as well. It would have been glorious if they had done Helm's Deep or the ents attacking Isengard in 10mm.

I missed Warmaster at the time, I was at uni and saw the releases, wanted it, but just wasn’t gaming at the time. I’ve got the rules, always planned to pick an army up, but my love of lotr means this came first.
