The Beauty of Flight: winter flying to Big Bear

3 жыл бұрынWinter flying in Southern California can be a beautiful experience. Snowy mountain peaks juxtaposed with blue waters of the Pacific create a stunning backdrop for flying my Grumman Tiger from Los Angeles to Big Bear, California. I feel very fortunate to be able to do this kind of stuff.

That low level cloud layer covering the foothills of the mountains on the way to Big Bear is pretty crazy

The best is when you're flying the coast from the Bay Area and see the fog bank creeping into Big Sur. That's always my favorite...so creepy and beautiful all at the same time.

Love your videos! You bring back many memories learning to fly and living in SoCal... my days at George AFB (my favorite video)/Hi Desert, Highland/SB/Inland Empire, LA/OC etc... many days and nights up/down Cajon Pass and Arrowhead/Big Bear. On and On. Nice summary of a beautiful flight to a beautiful place. I'd love to jump seat and fly with you on many of your adventures. You seem like a real cool laidback guy, smart and focused on safety -- you couldn't ask for more. So glad I found your channel. Safe travels brother, and please keep them coming!

It's amazing how this is all next to the desert. I once spent a weekend in Mojave on the way to Las Vegas from Sydney and had no idea this sort of stuff was going on just to the south. BTW thanks for pointing me at the FB Grumman group, already in contact with some Australian Grumman owners.

Spectacular! I enjoyed the music as well... very fitting. We love flying in winter here in Colorado, however, this year it's been a challenge as we've received more storms that usual, including our last one that dumped 3 feet in two days. Love the views! Fly safe and fly often!

Just curious, what do you use the GPS on the left side for?

That mount for a garmin 496 came with the plane when I bought it and I owned a 496 so it made sense to use it. I like to use the nearest mode on that GPS to know closest VORs/airports etc. The built-in 650 shows that info too, but I find it quicker to access on the 496. I also use the on screen data of the 496 to supplement the 650 by showing different info, because you can only stick so much info on the 650 screen at one time. Is it necessary? Of course not but I like having it there.

I enjoyed the "ride" and try to follow along on Google Earth with this type of video, as that's the only way I can fly. I couldn't figure out what airport you were using in the LA area, nothing I looked at seemed to match up, "help", thanks
