Each year, the Hermelin family of Detroit come together to celebrate Passover (pesach)-honoring the liberation of the Jews from slavery in ancient Egypt-by eating Gefilte fish, the meal that stars in New York-born director Rachel Fleit’s new film.
While simple on the surface, Gefilte is stuffed with history and meaning (just like the recipe itself, which includes a paste of fish, salt, vegetables and egg). However, “Gefilte isn’t about the fish,” suggests the Brooklyn-based writer and director. Instead, “it becomes a lightening rod, in which we project all of our feelings about family, identity, tradition, struggle, loss-and as always, love.”

"My husband said to me, 'Our kids are not going to be Jewish because of the Holocaust; they’re going to be Jewish because of the joys of Judaism!’" There I was thinking that I was clicking a link to watch a video about an occasionally delicious, sometimes mediocre, and often just plain awful appetizer. This is, in fact, beautiful.

I love gefilte fish with a little whole grain mustard, and some horseradish. Delish! It was my grandmother’s favorite. I sure miss her.

Beautiful video! Don’t know how my grandma prepared the gefilte fish, but loved having it, and her homemade matzo ball soup, as a child. All wonderful memories ❤️

Still not ready to go from Italian specialties to the Gefilte fish which is not part of the Italian celebration of 7 fish Friday Many of the people just really serve seven fish usually have if you have any family left you are lucky to have a wonderful and special evening which strengthens your faith And me and is so very much and I do know because I no longer have that valued family

I always loved gefilte fish. I always like them a little sweet. I hope to try making my own this year....I think the fact that you can get the ingredients de-boned and ground up in the store makes a big difference. Not like you have to club a carp and butcher it in your own house.

Not Jewish. But I have close friends that are Jewish. And I live in a community because that is very much Jewish. So I will say my experience with Judaism from the lens of a Hindu person. He’s very interesting. I’ve met all different types of people from various branches. Ranging from orthodox to more liberal if that’s the terminology. A group eating gefilte fish and I had plenty of Jewish friends. Now these days because life has gone in the way! I have not had access to the filter, fish partially because it was sold out partially because food prices these days

@@safir2241 you sound like you're more angry with it than your brother is. Chill out. The love of being part of the Jewish nation, is the faith in God and keeping his mitzvot/commandments. A bris/circumcision is one of them; a MAJOR one of them. Your mom did right. Now go have a Lechaim 🥃

When fishing with a rod and rell, how do you identify the gefiltes? Look for the ones with a carrot on the nose.

With the addition of so many gentiles(interfaith spouses) to the seder table few will try gefilte fish or like it! You have to grow up Jewish to appreciate it!
