@@Best_Blake idk, over colored stuff feels more dystopian to me because it is like corporate advertising and overstimulating services designed to keep your attention and keep you constantly engaged. Browns are such underrated colors, and really help create a much more calming environment. And sometimes going without colors can actually be really liberating. I have had my phone on black and white mode for the past month and it is one of the best decisions I have ever made. It's less stimulating so I use it less now. Corporations use colors to manipulate your emotions, so I've found it really fulfilling to break free from them. I suggest trying it out, at least for like a day, and see how it makes you feel. I honestly can't stand turning color mode back on now because everything feels so bloated and overstimulating.

My mom had this fascination with color and textures and after being diagnosed with high functioning autism I think they call it now a days? Asperger’s. She sealed our attic and painted it aquatic themed and had sand to play on the sealed floors with smooth rocks along with a lot of texture into the painted fishes that feel pretty close to scales and sealant pant that made them smooth but slippery. I freaking lived in the attic most of my childhood and I do admit I tend to be more open to textures then my fellow friends with same diagnosis.

I know a person who has a "showroom house". It's very uncomfortable and they are obsessive about keeping aesthetics and cleanliness to the point where they barely use it....What a miserable way to live....
@LilChuunosuke
@LilChuunosuke Жыл бұрын
My parents didnt go anywhere near as heavy into the showroom house as these people do, but I absolutely was not allowed to hang up pictures I wanted on my walls or on the fridge because "it'll look messy if guests come over." I had a couple cute posters in my room that were more colorful than these moms would allow, but they were always super generic things that matched the color theme of my sheets & furniture. It looked like a generic showroom for a young girl's bedroom in the early 2000s. Not allowing a child to have a single room where they are able to express their individuality actually does significant damage. I didnt know what types of things I liked until my 20s because I was not given the space to express myself independently & explore my interests. So it does legitimately cause developmental delays in a child. Just not things that will impact their education. Moreso things that damage their mental health.

I recently watched a tiktok from someone who grew up with a mother very similar to a "beige mum". Growing up not being able to sit on the couch because it would ruin her cushion display, getting in big trouble if you made any mess whatsoever etc. Apparently they now struggle with serious sensory issues due to the lack of colour in their childhood and are also very estranged from their mother. Colours are important! Children need colour in their lives, don't deprive them of it.

They are setting up their children to have issues, and they give no shits about it

As a mom I kind of can see that. I always wondered how these moms kept their house just so with the colors and organization they chose and how important it was to them. I just kind of figured that wasn’t going to work out for me and my family. That’s way sad

My cousin just had a baby and she’s also a child psychologist. She decorated the babies room with colour and made it as happy and colourful as she could because when working with kids she realised that a lot of colours that grew up in a colour neutral or beige home are more likely to suffer with depression. Now that she told me that I also became aware of the adults I know, the ones with beige or neutral homes are usually suffering with mental problems, especially depression. I have a red bedroom and the corridors are a nice shade of pale yellow, I realise it makes me so happy and relaxed.

I have beige walls in my house...because it's not my house, I'm renting. My partner wpuld love to change the walls because it reminds her too much of moving around a lot as a child, but we can't. We've made up for it by hanging up lots of really nice posters, art and wall decorations (including, for me, a hanging frame to put all my jewellery in), but it's the best we could do. Summing up, I wonder if there's a reason that stops them changing the walls that's making them sad, rather than the walls themselves?

I was raised in a really toxic family w a decent amount of $$ and these aesthetics remind me of my childhood home so much. I always felt like it was so cold and uninviting, and my parents would redesign it to make it worse and worse. Sure, it was clean and not cramped, but I never felt at home even when I was alone. It always felt foreign to me. My friends growing up who were lower income or just lived in less fancier parts of town had WAY nicer houses and so much cozier and homier, just based on design alone. I am no therapist but I feel like the beige aesthetic is them projecting their own emptiness, but also their own superiority complex. I don’t have a lot of money to decorate my current place but even on a low budget, I managed to make it cozy, with warm, neutral colours and different textures etc. My crappy apartment now feels more like home than my parents expensive house ever did. Thanks for helping me to see that. I took it for granted and sort of forgot how terribly cold their house was.

Yes! Exactly this! But you also have to understand that babies need certain enrichment and shit to be able to grow into their own people, which! It seems Gothic Babies parents understand very well! Her account was talked about on some talk show where all the women were blasting the mom for having a mostly black nursery, however the mom also had a playroom where her baby spends most of the time in and it’s super fucking colorful. This way the mom gets to have the nursery stick to her aesthetic, but her baby also gets her stimulatory needs met. Also as a side note, black and white are good for very young infants who are barely developing their eyesight! Hence newborn accessories and toys sometimes being black and white

I know right ? I’ve never seen a young child spending much time in their room at all because they need constant supervision, who cares if they have black, white or beige walls as long as they have enough toys and simulation otherwise. You can very well HAVE a beige nursery and just have storage bins to put the toys in when you want it to be clean? I don’t understand this video, there is no mention of research and is just bunch of assumptions based on the belief of someone who, as far as I’m aware, isn’t a parent and doesn’t have childcare experience. A BABY won’t put poster on the walls, a BABY won’t be « traumatised » going out in nature and seeing colours if their room isn’t bright orange or something, because there’s books, there’s kids programs, get this you can literally bring your baby outside as they grow up because aren’t in a science fiction movie, it’s actually good for them…

The thing people seem to be openly ignoring is the fact that a child NEEDS, genuinely NEEDS the stimulation of colors, textiles, sounds, lights, etc for their development, especially in those early baby stages where they're unable to move around freely by themselves or communicate. That sensory simulation is crucial to a baby's development. And no, I'm not a parent, but I took childhood development classes in college (as part of my teaching program). Children go through developmental stages, and some of them are annoying (like toddlers asking a million questions). But this is what they are biologically programed to do in order for their brains to develop and grow healthily. Depriving them of that necessary stimulation can have all kinds of damaging cognitive effects. And that's to say nothing of the emotional damage that growing up in such a strict household will cause, a house where they're never allowed to make messes or noise, never allowed to play freely or express themselves. This isn't a freaking aesthetic choice. It's straight up damaging for a baby/ child

I'll say this again for the beige moms. your aesthetic IS NOT your child's aesthetic! your comfort IS NOT your child's comfort! let them have their own space! let them be comfy in their room. don't push your aesthetic on the room. don't push your aesthetic on the child. thank you for sticking around to this rant.

The sad thing is that you can make beige & white look really nice too. My childhood home growing up had a lot of white & brown. But there was variety. There were other colors. There was detail & things to look at. The beige wallpaper in the hallways were covered in fleur de leis. The sitting room felt like walking into a forest bc it was all deep, rich greens and browns. The cottagecore aesthetic is basically centered on beige, but they make it vibrant & exciting by adding flowers & other pops of color. There are ways they can "maintain their aesthetic" without harming the development of their child. A garden themed nursery, for example. Lots more greens & they can add flower-themed pops of color. But they don't care for the development of their child. They have social media addictions. We already have stories out there of people who felt like they weren't safe to live in their own house because their instagram-addicted partner couldn't enjoy their living space without thinking about their like & follower counts. That's all I'm seeing here. Social media addictions causing childhood developmental problems in the children of addicted parents.

So while the beige/white/new money Kardashian mom type aesthetic is personally not my favorite, I do kind of understand where it comes from (in some cases, not all). I am an early years teacher and have worked in several different settings in different countries. For a long time, the understanding was that children need lots of bright colors in order to engage them and aid in brain development. And children are obviously drawn to very bright colors and shiny textures, possibly because bright shiny things in nature are often ripe fruits and fresh clean water. However, what is really important is variety without over-stimulation in a child's evironment. Children need lots of exposure to different textures, weights, types of sounds, shapes, etc. Color is just one part lf the equation. In the later part of the 20th century, we started to see school and home environments that were very oversaturated with color. We saw loads of plastic in childrens settings because it is easy and cheap to make very bright, shiny plastic materials. Toys became noisier and flashier as a way to grab the attention of children. This led to a very overstimulating environment for lots of children, which can actually have a negative impact on children's creativity, stress levels, attention span, ability to self regulate, and other factors. Not to mention the world at large was becoming an increasingly stressful and overstimulating place for both children and adults. So some early years settings began to focus on less over the top color and lots of natural materials such as wicker, stone, metal, wood, ect for children to interact with. And rather than being overlit like the flourescent classrooms of our youth, there is an emphasis on natural lighting and areas where children can experiment with light and shadow. Schools in Reggio Amelia Italy have inspired many of these settings. The rooms are often set in neutral tones as a way of serving as a blank slate for the childrens ideas. In my classroom the color comes from things like children's artwork, flowers and leaves they have found outdoors, and photographs they or the teachers have taken. Rather than alienating the children and forcing a trendy aesthetic on them, it allows them to take center stage. However, the key point here is that these spaces should nurture a child's development while allowing them to fully express themselves and feel like they belong. In those creepy all beige or all white McMansion play rooms, I find it hard to believe it is all about the childs ability to express themselves. Seems like if a child tried to paint or track mud into one of those rooms it would surely ruin the "aesthetic", which is just so troubling. TLDR: Beige kids rooms are great when they can be modified by the child and serve as a blank slate for them to showcase themselves, while providing enough variety of textures to aid in sensory development.

There's growing evidence that solo sleeping is developmentally damaging to secure attachment, and increases the prevalence of SIDS. Nurseries ought to be for mothers and babies to NURSE and PLAY, not sleep. It's essentially a rumpus/private bonding room. As you most likely know, mum and baby need to be together for the first 1000 days pretty much 24/7. There's no such thing as a manipulative, clingy baby, and the cry it out method also increases the chance of SIDS and maternal emotional neglect. My birth giver said I was a quiet baby, but I've come to realise that's only because she let me cry it out to the point I gave up on expressing my needs. My Nanna even said when my brother was born to let him cry for about 5 minutes but no more, or his lungs wouldn't develop properly.

Im in college right now getting my BFA so I've had to learn color theory and how colors effect mood. It's true that beige is a calming color but literally any color can be calming. Blue is almost universally calming so matter which value you go with. As a general rule though, pastels are all calming no matter the color because they are desaturated, on the other hand, bright highly saturated colors are universally more stimulating. You can introduce so much more color into a nursery and it can still be calming if they're pastel, then you can also add objects into the room that are brighter and more saturated but don't take up too much space so they won't be overstimulating. That way, there's a mix of calming and stimulating colors that your kid can focus on depending on what they need.

There was a whole trend for a while that basically just encouraged homeowners to treat their own house as if they're renting it from whoever ultimately buys it off of them. And now people have to be reminded that if they plan to live in this house for the next 10+ years, they shouldn't be worrying about catering to the tastes of whoever owns it next. It's been taken to such an extreme that the reverse has become true. Every house has such a cookie-cutter interior now that people will pay extra for a home that already has a fun & colorful interior.

I think the most interesting thing to come out of the "beige mum" trend will be seeing how these parents act when their children start developing their own opinions and aesthetics. From what i can gather out of videos like this, is that they treat their kids like a sort of dress up doll and their are two ways this could go: A) they'll act like normal people and let the kid have their own-more colorful-stuff in the room B) they'll throw a temper-tantrum, because the LIVING HUMAN BEING in their house wants a purple notebook or something And taking into consideration the fact they don't care abt their childs stimulatory needs bc it "ruins their aesthetic" theres unfortunately a very big chance it'll be the second option

@@emifukakado-msjoke let me tell you, they WILL shut it down!! My mom wasn't a beige mom but she liked the glam and fancier aesthetic and pushed that onto us when that wasn't my style AT ALL!! Also, I have a lot of sensational problems and sensitive skin so the clothing she made me wear was always stuffy, uncomfortable, and itchy to me and irritated my skin sometimes. I hated it! I'm a very colorful person and also liked a splash of black and was into the emo and scene aesthetic at the time and she hated it. I was only allowed to buy ONE scene shirt that I wanted and 3 years later had to BEG her to buy me these hot pink punk pants that I wanted. I had to wait till I worked my first job at 17 to buy the clothes that I wanted... Also, with our rooms, we had a tinyyy bit more freedom as she let us have a certain theme... As long as she was allowed to pick the pictures, lamps, dressers, etc... So we basically still didn't have freedom and when I was 19 and we moved into a different house, I had to beg and convince her to let me change my theme and pick some stuff that I wanted and that if she does let me, I'll find a way to pick and incorporate her pictures into my new theme. I have 2 daughters, aged 3 and 1.5. When my 3 yo was an infant, I fell into the beige mom trap… I found a niche baby clothes brand and was spending money I didn’t have on aesthetic baby clothes, I was buying only wooden Montessori toys that I also couldn’t afford, and would stage pictures to post on fb. Behind the scenes, I was drowning in depression and anxiety and wanted to be viewed as a good mom bc I was not secure in myself. I think it was when I got pregnant with my second, that I stopped caring about keeping up appearances with aesthetics. I allowed my daughter to wear clothes that weren’t earth toned. Unicorns and princesses and rainbows and color exploded in my home. Toys with BATTERIES (gasp) are in my home now. It’s just crazy because when you’re a first time mom it’s very easy to fall into the beige mom trap. And you waste so much money and time that could’ve been spent on better things…

My mum did the opposite lol. Lately she's fallen into the grey mum trap. My sister and I are both adults but by GOD it feels like I'm walking into an insane asylum whenever she redos a room to grey and white. Like ffs mum if you want people to actually visit you please make the place look inviting. I'm saving to get my own home with my bf and we're planning on having a different room theme for each room for each colour. I've seen a bedroom with nebulas and a black, blue, magenta and purple colour scheme that looks AMAZING, like crystals hanging everywhere, glow in the dark paint, glitter and all sorts of stuff making it feel like an awesome atmosphere to fall asleep in. As for a baby room, I'd be the sort of person to see something in a store at random and be like "need it" even though it looks so out of place with the rest of the house because that's exactly how I had it when I was little and my emotional and cognitive growth skyrocketed as a result. Babies need lots of things to explore and enjoy to grow into healthy minded people. Higgeldy piggeldy is probably the best way to go for little kids because that's what kids are, higgeldy piggeldy 😂

This seems wrong to me. I am not a beige mom (though I am a mom) but the person in the video was right that a nursery isn’t really a kids room. It will probably grow to be one when the baby becomes older (like a toddler) but teeny tiny babies needing support at night do not need anything in particular other than safe sleep surfaces, an adult to help them, food, diapers, etc it is usually a darkish room so colors wouldn’t show anyway and the whole house is probably overflowing with colorful toys and noise etc for the whole family. Having a space that is comfortable for the adults doing the taxing job of late night care etc is not going to make it so the kid doesn’t know colors. I don’t love the aesthetic but it does seem like you are making really big claims off of nothing. Like if someone had no toys or anything and needed the kids to not get anything dirty etc that would be a problem but liking a sort of tan color for nursery walls seems like an unnecessary thing to shame people for.

I grew up in a beige house with various shades of white beige and tan. My mom had a lot of anxiety around cleaness and she couldnt see if it was spotless if the walls and furniture weren't plain as possible. I think my mom would have been 10 times worse had she grown up with social media because she is so easily influenced by other's expectations - just trying to cope with her anxiety and relying on others to tell her what to do so she doesn't have to worry if it's right. However, my bedroom was bright pink flower themed (another idea she got from outside influence). I hated it. I refused to play in my bedroom. It was terrible all the way around and i had "tantrums" frequently about it (no one would listen to my polite requests, so child me would resort to screaming ofc). My bedroom was way too stimulating - all I wanted was dark (or at least light grey) walls so my room could be my sensory safe space. A lot of those beige bedrooms could be just fine if they added regular kids toys, colorful blankets, a rug that hides stains. all my furniture is black and natural wood tones, with colorful decorations, pillows, blankets, and so on. So really, my message here is to find balance. Some kids really do need plain, calming rooms. Other's will need that colorful kid "aesthetic". Other's will need something else. Funny thing, children are individuals and don't think the same way their parents do and could really care less what tiktok thinks 🙃

when my oldest sister was born, my grandpa painted a winnie the poo mural in their guestroom so everytime we visited, we would still feel at home :)

I have synaesthesia where colours have sound and the other way around as well (mostly for music and to a lesser extent, voices) white is loud and high pitched and headache inducing (it's fine with other colours but by itself...no). beige is an overwhelming low grumbling. I hate large amounts of both of them (black is silent for anyone curious and green/blue are the best sounding- calming and not overstimulating, imo basically: white is the most unnatural and unsettling and anxiety-inducing colour to make a whole house.

Im curious about what red would sound like. I have a red/black theme going on, I love it lmao

@@Smiley_Fruitcake Red looks like an intense colour, but maybe it sound different since it has so many interpretations anyway. I guess the type of red matters too. I once knew a colourblind girl who said her favorite colour was red. Didn't make much sense to me until I learned there was more to colourblindness than the Red-Green type.

@@angelicinternetuser this may be disappointing but it mostly sounds like red or blue depending on the shade but with some distortion (like ripples on a pond). regardless it's a nice sound

I have a feeling we might be having a bunch of kids who will be understimulated in their rooms and raise hell for their parents, since babies especially need stimulation for development or they’ll get bored and try to stimulate themselves by yelling or doing destructive things. (This is actually part of why I don’t want to have kids, they could easily overstimulate me and I wouldn’t be able to care for them properly.)

There’s a mom on KZfaq who followed her dreams well. Her and her husband love living as if they were people from the 1950’s. But their son’s room and wardrobe is all modern era because he wants it to be. She doesn’t force her son to live her dream, while also living hers. Like, it’s not that hard. The bar should not be this low. 🤦‍♀️

Kids need colors when they are growing up especially during early development. Even the gothic baby has a whole room just for colors and learning

The beige reminds me of doctors' offices, particularly mental health offices. It gives me anxiety.

Personally I quite like warm neutrals (as long as it’s creative) not because it’s trending at the moment, but because it feels safe and unsurprising. It’s probably the fact I’m autistic and want to avoid sensory overload- when I’m not overwhelmed I love (organised) clutter and colour. As long as you genuinely like it and aren’t afraid of expressing your true self, go for it :)

yeah I have the same issues but I think it still is beneficial to add some colours and textures into a nursery for the sake of the child's development...just more subtle and with the ability to hide especially irritating things in a toy box or closet or whatever.

when I saw all the neutral teddy bears all I could imagine is the kid latching on to a fun stuffed animal but being denied it because it wouldn't match with the rest of the house

Same, I really like warm neutrals, they even make pops of color stand out better! I feel like there is nothing wrong with the walls and mayor stuff being warm neutral as long as the toys are the typical colorful baby toys, for me I like pastel blues in my room because it helps me relax. Also growing up my whole ass house had white walls because it is more expensive to paint every room a different color lol.

I think brown, green, and beige decor is really nice and calming personally. That said color development is really important and bland colors probably don’t belong in a room for a baby. I enjoy the aesthetic but I’d keep it to personal rooms lol
