The Best and Worst Trilogies of the MCU

The first two MCU movies of 2023 and Phase 5 are both trilogy closers for franchises that began during the Infinity Saga with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 adding the Ant-Man and Guardians franchises to the relatively long list of trilogies and quadrilogies that has come out of the Marvel Cinematic Universe which is no small feat considering how low tiers these characters were before the MCU turned them into these big movie franchises and household names.
That being said, one of these movies is far better than the other and it’s clear that while the MCU does have a pretty consistent track record, at least during the Infinity Saga, not every one of these trilogies is equal to each other and with the only remaining franchises from the Infinity Saga, Doctor Strange and Captain Marvel not becoming trilogies anytime soon, the recent release of Guardians of the Galaxy is the perfect time to look at the seven trilogies or quadrilogies in the MCU and rank them from worst to best.

I feel like if they just cut out all the TV shows, people would actually like the universe more and not have as much superhero fatigue. After Endgame, just end all the trilogies (Ant-Man, GOTG, Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, and Black Panther), take a break, and then reboot the universe with Shang-Chi, Eternals, Fantastic 4, X-Men, etc. with Kang as the main villain.

One of the most frustrating things about Disney's influence in the MCU today is the way gore and blood are heavily censored in fights, with "At the Multiverse of Madness" being a rare exception. My List would be: 1. Guardians of The Galaxy: (All three movies are fantastic, the part were they chill on egos planet in Guardians 2 can be a little slow but i think the ending and emotional conclusion for Yondu makes easily up for it) 2. Avengers (Kinda self explanatory, all of these movies are basically the climax of longer arcs that play out fantastically, Age of Ultron is the weak link for me but its not even bad at all. And Infinity War is my favorite MCU movie.) 3. Spider-Man (A super consistent Trilogy with a perfect third movie in my opinion, also some of the best villains in all of the Mcu and Spider-Man easily being a top tier character in all of his trilogies. I also love the different approach to Spider-Mans character in this trilogy, it felt super refreshing) 4. Captain America (Im not a big fan of the first Movie, however the 2nd Movie and Civial war are some of the best, most grounded movies the Mcu has created. With great action and interesting character arcs.) 5. Thor (Hear me out okay. Ragnarok is my 3rd favorite MCU movie and carries this entire thing on its back. I also dont hate love and Thunder, i think it had severe issues for sure, but i also think Gorr is one of the better villains we got despite being underused and the movie was visually still great.) 6. Iron Man (The fiest Iron Man is a fantastic movie with a super interesting character arc and fantastic practical effects, its kinda the gold standard for an mcu movie imo. The other 2 however are questionable) 7. Ant Man (Sadly i just dont care for Ant Man at all. I think Ant Man is the definition of mediocre for me, i think all the side characters are mediocre. I think the villains are mediocre, the storylines are mediocre. Only the Action in the first Movie could really hook me. Ant Man movies are like white bread with butter and a glass of water, you can eat it and its not awful but its also nothing you turn to when you wanna eat something. I rather have some negative and positive impressions about a franchise than just feeling nothing at all while watching)

@@XclusionZone i think its a perfect third movie becuase it has the Highest stakes, Spidermans best growth in the Mcu, what happened changed the trajectory of Spidermans life and changed his character more than anything from the other movies. It set up a different tone for the upcoming movies. Also i loved the action, visuals and Villains. Also the concept of all the spideys meeting each other was great imo and was really wholesome and interesting to witness. Like it just used Spidey how he was established and pushed him and what he can do to his limits changing him and his story in the mcu forever. Thats how i view it at least. Really loved that movie.

I completely agree with your list except for one thing. I think Guardians of the Galaxy is the BEST trilogy in the MCU. I absolutely love these movies and Guardians was a balance of everything that made the MCU a strong connected universe. This movies third entry made me confirm that this is my favorite trilogy. This entry manages to do what Thor: Love and Thunder couldn't. Balance a disturbing and dark story with humor. And on top of that it delivers a satisfying conclusion on an amazing story. The second entry was a wild ride and insanely fun. And finally the first entry was a perfect beginning to something that would eventually become my favorite MCU trilogy/quadrilogy.

If I were to rank them I'd say 1. Captain America - 3 solid entries with one masterpiece that is widely considered the best of the MCU 2. Guardians of the Galaxy - I didn't like the second one, but most people apparently did. Either way, I consider the first and third films masterpieces. The second has gotten better on rewatch for me and I think it fits well in the trilogy, but still not really a fan. 3. Avengers - The first two Avengers honestly look kind of cute now. Infinity War and Endgame bolsters the rating but I consider the first Avengers good but overrated, and Age of Ultron, underrated but still only good. 4. Iron Man - Iron Man 3 is a good underrated film, and the first one is still close to the best the MCU has to offer. Too bad the second one kind of sucks but it still has its moments. 5. Spider-man - I'm going to be unpopular here but I did not care about the MCU Spiderman for ages. Homecoming I found extremely overrated, I thought it was awful. Far From Home was decent enough but still overrated. The trilogy suffers a lot from being stuck in Iron Man's shadow. No Way Home was the one that finally won me over, but even that is only a good movie being hailed as great because of fan service 6. Thor - The first Thor was underrated. I personally think Ragnarok was a mistake, but it was still a fun entertaining movie. Dark World and Love and Thunder are both trainwrecks I want to kill with fire. They drag the franchise down a lot 7. Antman - Fun first film. Should've stopped at one. Everything else is garbage.

I think the reason why iron man 1 was and still is to this day one of if not the best mcu movie is because it is mature with its characters. The story is about a man who sees the wrong he is doing and seeks to amends through change. If you compare that Tony to the one we see in the rest of the mcu, it’s like tony actively regressed and lost that maturity he had in the first movie. That being said, the mcu does address this subtlety which results in Tony’s arc in civil war, but after that movie he still doesn’t feel like the same tony from the first movie.

the thing that irritates me about Infinity War and Endgame is we don't get to see a lot of action that I thought would have been amazing. like when Thor made his entrance in wakanda in IW, it just cuts to a different scene. and when I thought we'll get to see the big three in Endgame fight Thanos, it just cuts and only gave a few action scenes that would've made it really cool. kinda predictable too that the avengers will lose in Infinity War bc we all knew there would be a part 2. nonetheless I enjoyed those movies but kinda felt like I was being punished sometimes when watching it. I felt like Star-Lord was dumbed down too much in the Avengers movies. He was already kind of an idiot but giving him a line like "I'm not from Earth I'm from Missouri" is just too stupid.

He wasn’t an idiot, he was just goofy 😂 The being from Missouri not Earth line was funny to me and it kind of makes sense why he said it. He was only on Earth for the first 8 years of his life before he got taken away into space to live among aliens. So he essentially grew up with aliens in different parts of the galaxy. But I definitely can also see how that’s perceived as him being dumb lol. But he does make up for that by being a great leader and then coming up with the plan to subdue Thanos (before he lost his temper and messed the whole plan up 😒😂).

guardians 3 worked esp well and is a good conclusion to the entirety of the mcu. ud fall in love w rocket more after understanding howd he turn out mean like tht, starlord's wounds and hung up of his lover from a movie not part of the trilogy, mantis's struggle to be heard in the family shown thruout the previous movies and nebula's change after her long deep seated hatred for thanos disappears. everything just concludes perfectly and it takes more than these trilogy to achieve all tht i feel

Here’s my list 1. Guardians of the Galaxy: This is easily the most consistent of the trilogies and I truly can’t pick which movie is my favorite. All the movies are Great. 2. Captain America: The first movie is easily the weakest but it’s decent and a good origin story. It’s a mid tier MCU movie while WS and CW are so strong that they carry it, being my two favorite marvel movies and two of my favorite overall comic book movies after Dark Knight. Had the Russo Brothers directed the first movie as well as the next two, this trilogy would’ve been perfect and would’ve stayed my #1. First Avenger- Decent Winter Soldier- Amazing Civil War- Amazing 3. The Avengers: 1st movie is great and helped change the landscape of superhero movies. Infinity War and Endgame were of course also great and they benefitted from their long run times and being the culmination of the Infinity Saga and the MCU as we knew it. And the trilogy also benefits from actually being a quadrilogy (I kind of consider it a trilogy because Endgame is essentially IW pt 2). Unfortunately Age of Ultron holds it back big time imo. Avengers-Great Age of Ultron-Mid Infinity War-Amazing Endgame-Great 4. Spiderman: This trilogy got better with every movie. I didn’t like Homecoming as much as most other people and I liked FFH more than most other people lol, and NWH most people agree was very good-great. The villains were also some of the best in the MCU. Only thing is the MCU’s Peter lacks where the other ones excelled: they were self sufficient and had Uncle Ben. MCU Peter relied too much on others and every movie involved Stark in one way or another. Homecoming-Good FFH- Very Good NWH- Great 5. Ant Man: This trilogy actually got worse as it went. The first movie was very good and one of the funniest MCU movies, plus was very inventive and different. A&tW was also good but a step down. But it was really cool to see Hope take up her mantle as the Wasp. Quantumania had the best villain in Kang and was enjoyable, but was missing Luis and the crew. And that was a big part of the reason why the humor didn’t hit the same as the 1st and 2nd movie. Overall it was nothing special. Ant Man-Very Good Ant Man & the Wasp-Good Quantumania- Mid 6. Iron Man: The first movie is great and one of the best origin movies ever, which also sets the bar for the rest of the MCU. What drags it down are the 2nd and 3rd movie, unfortunately. Neither of them is necessarily bad but they’re pretty mediocre. And I actually didn’t mind the Mandarin twist in the 3rd one because, at the time, I didn’t know anything about the character lol. Plus it fooled me and everyone else. So by definition that makes it a good twist lol. And with Shang-Chi coming out and wrapping up the Mandarin aspect of Iron Man 3 and essentially redeeming the Mandarin, Iron Man 3 actually aged a little bit better. Iron Man-Great Iron Man 2-Mid Iron Man 3-Mid-Decent 7. Thor: First movie is decent but forgettable. 2nd movie is in the same tier as Iron Man 3 and Iron Man 2, but I actually found it kind of enjoyable. Ragnarok basically reinvents and improves Thor and this movie is much more fun and enjoyable than the first two. The problem was that Taika took Thor’s humor that he gave him and dialed it way up in Love & Thunder. Thor’s franchise suffers hard from this and L&T is arguably the only MCU movie out of all the movies in these other trilogies that I consider a truly bad movie. Thor-Decent Thor: Dark World-Mid Ragnarok-Very Good Love & Thunder-Bad

8:49 it’s more than just Iron Man. There was a very clear quota, for corporate reasons, to make as many references and connections to the MCU as much as possible when it came to Tom Holland’s Spider-Man without making it too jarring. Otherwise, Sony had no reason bringing the character to the MCU, it would have been bad business. The never ending coincidences going on in Peter’s life in this continuity relating to the Avengers takes away his independence that makes his character so rich in other forms of media and constantly suspends disbelief beyond what is believable. He’s a loner and an outcast, and definitely doesn’t need the approval of someone like Iron Man (a rich selfish industrialist) to prove he’s capable of managing on his own. If a new deal between Marvel and Sony is reached, you can expect more “coincidences” happening in Spider-Man’s superhero and personal life, as he constantly finds himself within 100 feet of the Avengers.

My list is as follows: 7. Thor. Strong first film with an incredible character arc for Thor. However, the constant change in directors and writers lead to changes that make the franchise feel incongruent. I haven’t even seen Love and Thunder and most of what people loved about Ragnarok didn’t work for me. 6. Ant-Man. First two are solid and the third one is mediocre. Despite the same director and writers, it doesn’t stay committed to following up on loose ends left by the previous entries. 5. Iron Man. Pretty good at giving a full arc to Tony and the first and third ones are pretty solid. I wish Justin Hammer’s promise was realized. 4. Captain America. This trilogy finds a way to make 3 distinct movies give Steve a complete arc that can stand on it’s own, but at the same time feel a part of the bigger arc in the infinity saga. Great first 2 films with a flawed, but entertaining Civil War. 3. Guardians of the Galaxy. I love the first and third and am not much of a fan of the second one. This trilogy has all the emotions and clever sound tracks you want with a satisfying conclusion. 2. Spiderman. Homecoming feels a little disjointed from the last two and Peter’s crush on MJ feels a little forced, but this trilogy has the best character arcs and best villains. No way Home is a true treat for fans and is a satisfying conclusion. 1. Avengers. Each movie is an event. If Age of Ultron is the weakest film of this quadrilogy, it speaks highly of the franchise. And it has a satisfying conclusion.

i would also consider that the guardians movies have an advantage because they are essentially team up movies. If it was just one of them on their own, starlord, rocket...etc, it may not have been as strong of a trilogy. then you also got to consider, that those movies are not on earth and the massive amount of creative freedom Gunn had compared to other trilogies that are based on earth (except thor). obviously you can make a good movie just on earth but Gunn had alot of toys to play with. so when you look at trilogies with just the main hero, maybe one side kick, i think it changes things. which one is the best then?

Here’s my list: #1. Guardians of the Galaxy: When I first saw the trailer I really didn’t care for the characters and didn’t think I was gonna like the movie at all. But holy shit was I proven wrong, all three movies are awesome and the 3rd one is my 3rd favorite MCU movie of all time, one of the only times I’ve teared up watching a movie. #2. Avengers: I can’t tell you how many times I went and saw the 1st Avengers when it first came out, absolutely game changing to the movie scene and really kicked off the MCU in a path no one saw coming. The second one was alright, not the biggest fan and Ultron could have been made a lot cooler but still fun to watch. Infinity War is my #1 favorite MCU movie of all time, awesome story, plot, best villain that has ever hit the big screen, the ending, the YEAR LONG SUSPENSE, etc. I could watch this movie over and over again. And then of course End Game, tied the Infinity Saga up perfectly and couldn’t have asked for a better movie. #3. Captain America: The first one is very meh to be, it was hard for me to watch the first time when it first came out and I just rewatched all the MCU movies last year and it was hard then too. But then Winter Soldier came out and holy shit is that movie so good. Great action, plot, characters, etc. absolutely awesome movie. Civil War was also great with Zemo being a super underrated villain, literally did all this shit just to fuck with the Avengers is awesome (also introduced MCU Spidey and Black Panther) #4. Iron Man: The movie that kicked it all off, Iron Man 1 had some awesome graphics for 2008 and the plot and villain was pretty damn good too. #2 was not the best and was indeed very hectic but getting to see War Machine was pretty fun. #3 I thought was underrated and I actually liked the Mandarin twist, Tony having to fight without his suit was also awesome because everyone always says he’s nothing without it. #5. Spider-Man: I really liked Homecoming and thought the Vulture was an absolutely menacing. I really didn’t care that much for Far From Home, the villain was cool but it was just too much Stark. Which is really my whole problem with this version of Spider-Man, way too much Stark Tech involved in it and kinda takes away from the actual character. But No Way Home makes up for that with the ending and I lost my shit when Tobey and Andrew showed up on the big screen. It was awesome to see all three together. #6. Thor: I honestly don’t have say to much about this series. 1, 2, and 4 I could really never watch again in my entire life and be fine, I just don’t care for them. Ragnarok was perfect tho and really saved Thor’s character for a bit there. #7. AntMan: I hate to say it but I really just don’t give a fuck about this series. #1 was good but not really great, #2 was super forgettable and I just didn’t like, and #3 was only good because of Kang, everything else about it was really annoying (especially Cassie)

Avengers, Guardians, Spider-Man, Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Ant-Man. This is my personal list. Choosing between Avengers and Guardians was incredibly difficult because I felt like most of Endgame was pretty lazy and relied so much on nostalgia to be good while all three guardians movies were made with extreme care and had hardly any nostalgia to carry the movies yet they were all still masterpieces. But I mean come on. It’s the Avengers. I don’t think anyone could ever put Avengers anywhere but at the top. It’s got all the trilogies characters all at once including the guardians.

@@jasonsenter1646 My ass Endgame was lazy. Also that's a bad example of calling something lazy if it uses nostalgia. @jasonsenter1646
@jasonsenter1646 Жыл бұрын
@@dimensionzone8048 I said pretty lazy AND relied on nostalgia to be good not that it was pretty lazy BECAUSE it relied on nostalgia. Those were two different points. I get where you’re coming from when it comes to the nostalgia. It did deserve it. However when I say lazy I mean when Tony invents time travel over night. And if that wasn’t bad enough, all of the plot holes that ensue because of the time travel that are never addressed because “all of those time travel movies were a bunch of bull shit”… yea ok. No. And the final fight with Thanos was very messy. Thanos should not have been able to put up as big of a fight as he did. He has no infinity stones and he is much younger than he was in infinity war. I can see him putting up a fight against the big 3 which is questionable but tolerable nonetheless. But there is no way in hell he could’ve held his own against captain marvel. And that brings up another issue which is Captain Marvel herself. She randomly gets introduced between infinity war and endgame as this insane powerhouse which completely ruins any sense of a real fight at the end. Realistically she would’ve completely destroyed Thanos in a matter of seconds. And that one scene where he throws his sword and it somehow goes faster than Captain Marvel into the time machine and blows it up.. like come on there’s no way he could’ve thrown his sword to go faster than Captain Marvel when she is literally already closer to the time machine than him. There is just so much lazy writing in Endgame I could go on and on and on.

Thor: The Dark World is great. I’ve always appreciated it. I personally believe it to be the last good Thor movie. Never been a fan of Ragnarok or Love and Thunder. Never thought the humor was funny and really none of it landed for me. I liked the darker tone both Thor and Thor: The Dark World brought to the character of Thor. I didn’t really care for Taika Waititi’s directing style and the route he decide to take the films. I really enjoyed Kenneth Branagh’s directing style however. I know that he didn’t direct The Dark World, but I do wish he would’ve stayed around. I have always thought that The Dark World was very entertaining. I love the action and the story. Sure, Malekith isn’t the best villain and I can admit to that, but there are many MCU films with weaker villains that are still considered better than The Dark World. I really like watching this film with people who have never seen it before. There’s quite a few things that happen in the film that are very important. Frigga’s death, Loki’s second death, Loki revealing that he is in fact alive again, etc. I really like how the film heavily follows up with 2012’s The Avengers. It really deals with the repercussions of that film. I think it does it beautifully. I know it sounds really weird for someone to defend this movie like I am right now, but I’ve always loved it. One of my favorites in the MCU and I’m always excited when I come by it in a MCU rewatch. I can easily watch it by itself sometimes too.

I think the hollowness you described is try of Love and Thunder, but Ragnarok has some great emotional story beats such as Orin’s death, Mjolnir breaking, Thors talk with Loki and Thor unlocking his power. The obvious answer is the Avengers. The first movie had that amazing Battle of New York. Which is the only movie to utilize Captain America as a battle tactician. Plus that one take where it goes from ground to the sky following each Avenger is epic. And it has the single best shot in Marvel with the Avengers circle. Age of Ultron is a slight step down. Ultron could have been a Thanos level villain if properly utilized. But it introduces Wanda and Vision and has the fun Hulkbuster fight. Infinity War is the best Marvel, maybe even the best superhero movie period. Having the story be from the point of view of Thanos was a brilliant touch. His Old Testament view of justice is an excellent contrast to the more modern heroism of the Avengers. It somehow perfectly balances the screen time of all the heroes. Each main character gets at least one moment to shine. The fight on Titan is the best boss fight put in a movie. The moment where he throws the moon rocks at Iron Man had me speechless for the rest of the fight. Plus the spell fight between Thanos and Dr Strange was awesome. Endgame is the best finale and connected all the previous stories to the ultimate battle between every hero and Thanos. Plus the moving ending starting with “I am Iron Man”.

Hot take: I didn’t love the guardians trilogy. Yes, I know they are all fantastic movies. I have watched and enjoyed all 3. But I think they are a bit overrated for what they are. I never loved mantis, she felt unimportant until the holiday special/Guardians 3, even if here character was entertaining up to that point. Groot is a great character, but I find it jarring to have his size and shape change so much and so drastically. It’s hard to get attached to the character when he’s designed so differently in every appearance. And these movies in general aren’t without their problems. The love story between Gamora and Quill suffered a lot because of the events of infinity war/endgame. The characters from rockets backstory feel a bit cliché even if the backstory was done well. Plus Adam warlock was criminally underused in guardians 3. Again I think these movies are all atleast an 8/10. But I’d personally rank it 4th out of the 7 trilogies.
