In this MCU Video Essay we discuss Ant-Man Quantumania and how it proves that the MCU has completely lost its mind. Ant Man 3 was not the Avengers level film that it was supposed to be, instead the introduction of Jonathon Majors Kang was the only shining light in an otherwise awful film. Quantumania goes to show that Marvel still hasn't shaken off the disappointment of Phase 4 of the MCU. Is the MCU doomed to fail from here?

In regard to the idea of Antman's death, even MattPatt from Film Theory thought it was a good idea. Linking his death to the motivation of uniting heroes against Kang.
@SpottedHares

Ant man is kind of the 9 to 5 super hero. you couldn't make the argument that if he fails then the polices or some other normal agency could just fix the problem. When he not on the job he just doing normal stuff, keeping out of prison being a dad you know normal thing. When its in a bigger move he dose a good job of showing what a real normal person is going to be like. But the wrong pick for Kang, Kang kind of needed a heavy hitter that we normal would assume would win... only to loose no contest really sell how dangers he is by letting him win right at the start no problem. Should have been multivers of madness, Kang vs multiple Dr.strange and a not badly written scarlet witch. And Kang wipes the floor with then, no contests., the got slapped and had no chance whats so ever. Seven million realities and in one they last a few second longer kind of beat down. The only reason the heros make it though is Kang has more important goals then confirming the kill against something that isn't a threat on any level.

They need to incorporate more practical effects and sets. My favorite scenes from phase 4 have been the more grounded & emotional moments. Like NWH’s Green goblin vs. Spider man fights. Another example are the flashback sequences from Shang Chi. Also just the writing for the most part sucks. I keep seeing hints of a compelling story buried underneath the lack of nuance, awful jokes and bad dialogue. The over reliance on generic and simple story devices is killing these movies. Plus overall the multiverse plot thread is messy. That stuff was poorly planned. unfortunately. even the movies from this phase not related to the multiverse sucked. They should have at least excelled in those films. And I don’t want anymore tv shows unless they’re given a minimum of 10 episodes + well thought out. There’s too much sub par or plainly bad content being thrown at the audience.

@@OogaBoooga I mean, I agree with the quality of those two shows; however, they're 2 good things in the middle of a lot of meaningless ranging from bad to average content. This is something Disney is doing with all its properties. For example, they are making a prequel movie of The Lion King about Mufasa... why? It is so unnecessary, it serves no purpose other than making money out of the nostalgia of people, and most likely it'll suffer the same problems as most of the Disney content has been presenting in the last 4 years.

Oversaturation is definitely a huge factor. But even if they only averaged 2-3 films a year like their earlier phases, I still think they'd really struggle due to the general repetitiveness of everything. At the end of the day Kang is just Thanos 2.0, and the phases are setting up for another big villain takedown like the last one. There's nothing really "new" about that. I'm sure most of us say it, but I miss the old phases. It was so fun watching things like the first Avengers meeting or the Civil War happening. Now all the films and shows just feel grey.

There have been similar issues all over film these days. The feelings of discovery and wonder are gone from most movies, and it just seems like everyone's rehashing the same territory these days.

@@EmptyZoo393That's not actually the problem, the problem is that you people _feel _ like the sense of discovery and wonder are gone. I had experienced every variation of every story that could ever be told by the time I was sixteen years old. I did my school work within minutes of it being handed to me and then spent every class reading books I liked, on t of books that were assigned by my literature teachers, and then I went home and binge watched as much tv as possible before doing the same thing the next day. Comics, plays, novels, sitcoms, dramas, films, I watched and read everything and because of that I saw the same stories rehashed thousands of times over. The point I'm building to is that despite the fact that I'm over a decade out of school I can still enjoy a film despite it not telling a 100% original story, we've been out of original stories for generations. If a Pop-culture black hole like me can enjoy movies, all of the regular viewing public who have only ever read three books and haven't managed to hit four digits in their number of movies watched can stop pretending that they're above it all and have seen all there is to see. I've been watching movies just to shit on them through the widest smile I can muster for most of my life. If someone thinks movies are dead because no fun can be wrung from them they're just lying and being purposefully obtuse.

Could you imagine if Quantumania had Avatar-level special effects? Could you imagine if it were competing with Avatar: Way of Water for its CGI hype and buzz, and if it were a real contender (if not winner) at the Academy in that category? I think people would be talking about Quantumania differently. It still has tone and story and character problems, but Marvel knew going in to Quantumania that they were going to spend the whole film in the quantum realm--they should have known upfront to invest more heavily in VFX so that we don't get CG fatigue. Imagine the discourse on this film if people were gushing over its VFX creativity and how immersive and stunning the quantum realm is. That’s because you don’t pay attention. People like you only enjoy a movie when things are made obvious to you. Sometimes a movie dialogue needs deeper analysis. My favorite movie of all time is called Chaos starring Wesley snipes. That movie has some of the best dialogue and bank heist iv ever seen in a movie. Yet people rate that movie poorly just because unless it’s super obvious to them they don’t want to dive deep and uncover things in the movie. A line in the movie that one of the bank robbers tell the detective after killing a hostage. He says “you can’t expect to keep hostages in check if you let a bad deed go unpunished, chaos has some order to it” that line was just brilliant

If they started to shift the tone of every project to be more serious making the character development and writing a bigger priority while connecting every story with the rise of Kane in someway I think Disney would have a chance at winning audiences back over. Also, they need to be more selective with choosing which directors get to shoot these movies / shows or else we get another phase 4 mess lol
@BrokeredHeart
@BrokeredHeart Жыл бұрын
I'd be willing to remain optimistic. Another comment I've read points out that this fourth phase has emerged during a lot of corporate changes at Disney, with Chapek pushing their content to the newly launched streaming service right as the world went into pandemic lockdown. Now that streaming competition has taken away that lustre from Disney+, and Bob Iger is back in the driver seat, the changes to their productions should be palpable. I think the slowdown in title rollout will help to not only improve their graphics, but also won't drag them through pointless rewrites and edits that make these shows and films unwatchable. Hiring directors like Gunn, Coogler, Shakman, and Herron shows to me that they trust their artistic direction and creativity, which has paid off in terms of audience reception. I have my fingers crossed that they won't go the same route as Warner Brothers and HBO Max with their slash and burn tactics to try and get their franchises back into profitable margins. I think they were lighting the candle at both ends by pumping tv series to the platform while rushing to return films to the theatres, which stretched their production teams too thin and abused their talents in unforgivable ways. I would much rather wait longer to see the films they have in the pipeline than to have routine releases of MCU titles every 4 to 6 months, knowing that they have some time to breathe and really focus on the storytelling, rather than overwhelming the viewers with over-the-top CGI and lackluster dialogue. Given some space, there's a lot of material to work with as they move into the next phase with new actors, in ways that are particularly sensitive to the films that came before it.

For a very simple reason. To compare it with videogames, the MCU is right now in that stage where you are playing an open world game or RPG, you just finished the main story and you are now just doing side quests. Sure, there can be a fun side quest every now and then, or have fun fucking around for the sake of it, but nothing takes away the feeling that the game is over, that the ending happened and the credits rolled. The MCU is in here but even worse because it also got rid of not just it's main characters, but what have always been the most important Avengers like Cap and Iron Man. It happened what I think many people feared: that they had no plans after Thanos.

Glad you mentioned the over reliance of CGI because that has become a HUGE issue in phase four. The early MCU films look infinitely better then all of phase four and some of phase three because they used practical effects and filmed on location, making each film look and feel unique. The almost exclusive use of CGI has made everything look cheap and devoid of any character or feeling. It’s all just a grey, poorly animated mess. And I don’t fault the CGI artists and animators for this at all, they are doing all the can do. I blame marvel and Disney for underpaying, overworking, and exploiting them, having them animate an insane about of content in such a short amount of time because it’s the cheapest option for Disney

The only downside was the stupid Boner joke and all that Mephisto teasing without it going anywhere. The few shows after Wandavision were kinda okay, but at some point, everything just turned boring. Idk when that point was reached. I remember enjoying the Hawkeye series and Moon Knight (tho I did wonder how tf Moon Knight would tie into the rest in the future), but then...nothing. I hated Dr. Strange 2 for what they did to Wanda. I was annoyed at Thor 4 because they just wasted the God butcher (and Bale) and the tone and humor were awful. Black Panther 2 was boring as hell and so was the villain. I can't even remember what shows we got. I liked Ms. Marvel, but it just didn't feel like it belonged to the MCU und it doesn't fit in there. She Hulk was an abomination (pun intended). Warning wall of text incoming :) This seems like a problem on paper, but honestly once you start interpreting the MCU in a way that got comic book fan interprets comics it quickly goes away. What I mean by this is that there are... SO many comics. Such a vast array of content produced for a vast array of characters. Us comic book fans don't read everything that comes out, we read what interests us. I've always seen the MCU the same way. If you decide to view the MCU is something you need to see every individual piece of, that's you exhausting yourself. If you plan to stick with the franchise (and if you don't, that's fine) I promise you that you will be much better off cherry picking what interests you rather than watching everything marvel pumps out like homework. You will have a much more fulfilling experience. I don't really agree with the consensus of the video that you should feel compelled to watch every bit of scrap you're fed in case you miss anything. If you don't want to, don't. It's your time, your spend it. I wasn't interested in Thor 2, or Black Widow, so? Didn't watch it. Didn't watch WandaVision or Loki or What If, and I'm not gonna watch Ironheart when it comes out this year. If something comes out with a character I like who I missed, I make the choice to go back and watch that. This doesn't really fix the quality problem, but it does mean you can live your life. Just my two cents.

He's the last one who can honor what the 3 of them were able to accomplish but he's getting his legacy totally butchered. He is still alive, he has the weight of Iron man and Captain America on his shoulders. He's the last one. Do you know the care and responsibility that has to go with that? But nope, fuck all that.

I agree with most of the factors you mentioned but was shocked you thought Loki was a good show, I had to force myself several times just to get through each episode individually, my cousin gave up on it and told me to give him a rundown of what happened. In my opinion, WandaVision was the best by far, and if I HAD to choose a runner-up, surprisingly I enjoyed Falcon and the WInter Soldier. But most movies so far have been mid except Shang-Chi surprisingly. I though I would enjoy No Way Home more but most of it was underwhelming, like even when the three spidermen came together, everything was just mid. I'm about to watch Eternals this weekend and then Multiverse Madness. But for the most part you right, it feels like homework watching all these series and movies, rather just stick to movies, the series feels like homework.

I think more comic book movies should be animated. If the majority of your effects can be real, make them real so it FEELS REAL. I think huge problems that people don’t want to talk about are that Stan Lee died and wasn’t involved and Disney became way more involved. Disney couldn’t care less about the quality of the product they’re releasing anymore. They just care about generating mass amounts of revenue by pumping out as much product as possible, hence phase four having more content in a shorter period of time than the first three phases combined. To me, Disney has WAY too many other balls up in the air to dedicate the proper time, focus, and budget to the MCU so now it’s cheap laughs, poor character development, and mass production.

Not at all saying that _this_ was the right direction for her character, just acknowledging the fact that Cassie should realistically be far different than the spunky little girl we loved. But if the movie doubled down on THAT…picture an emotionally cut off, edgier Cassie. One who struggles to feel anything at ALL, because of what Thanos stole from her. she probably wouldn’t end up like Clint because she was only a child…however, I imagine she’d have some intense abandonment issues, and that would largely impact her and Scott’s relationship. Another reason it is failing is that they thought the franchise will continue to be successful by itself because it was well established as successful at that point. They were so confident it will keep on going by itself and they removed Iron Man, captain America (and even Thor I would say) without having first established replacement characters that would have the same appeal to continue as leading figures. Let’s be honest, Iron man and cap heavily carried MCU up to this point and I was hoping that Doctor strange would be a viable next leading figure but he was given a secondary role even in his own movie. @@rrando726 Fake consequences?? I'm fairly sure Aunt May dying wasn't a "fake consequence", same goes for Peter losing connection with literally EVERYONE. The little ammount of friends and familly members he had either cut ties with him or died. Peter also lost his connection to Stark's wealth, meaning he ended alone, in a small room.

@@rrando726 Peter also lost connection to the avengers and lost his opportunity to go to college. His life was ruined by the consequences of Doctor Steange's spell.

Something you didn’t mention is that nothing actually happens in the movie if you think about it. No one dies, no character arcs, the movie pretty much ends the same way it started.

No matter what it is, once something is around for a few years there’s going to people on KZfaq making videos about how somethings dying or it isn’t as good as it use to be. The thing I find funny about marvel though is the people who say the put out too much content as if comics aren’t a thing
