Super helpful tip for a shorter axe is to do the wood processing from your knees. A lot safer and more controllable. If you’re on your knees and miss the log you’ll hit the ground instead of your leg like if you were standing! Cheers boys

I took a northmen carpentry course. We used their axes every day for ten days and they only got touched up probably once each the whole time of days of use building a frame. And they preformed incredibly well in all aspects of carpentry. The general purpose axes were amazing, the specialized axes did what they were designed for perfectly. Overall both their tools, and their courses I cannot speak highly enough of. I have yet to buy and axe from them for myself but I do want to after using them. If you are at all interested you will not be disappointed. That goes for their courses to.

To cut up a round with a small ax, you should "rind cut" it. Just like you would peel off the rind from an orange, you cut off the outer layer of wood reducing the size of the round. Start by laying the round on its side. Now cut a line down the center, from the far end of the round to the near end. Now you have a cut line running away from you down the center of the round. Now make a second cut either to the right or left of the main cut 3 or 4 inches (8 to 10 cm) away. Cut towards the center of the round not vertically. Start at the back end and bring the cut towards you. As you get to the last cut the wood chip will fly off the round with some force, so be careful to not have your face too close. This is why you cut from far to near end. You don't want your hand over the wood as it flys off. Now, roll the round over and repeat a cut 3 or 4 inches (8 to 10 cm) from that, and continue rolling the round and making new cuts. Eventually, this will reduce the round to a size you can split down the center.

@@bushmaster8912 if you want 3v. Get it from someone who heat treats it well. Bark rivers are pretty good. But they don’t honor their warranty half the time and their customer service sucks. So if you do end up having problems, it’s a headache to get it taken care of. Nathan carother is without a doubt, the best 3v knife maker. But it’s a struggle to get a knife from him as he does small batches and sells out fast. Thus I recommend Bradford knives. Excellent knives. Great heat treatment and a solid warranty. A bit pricy but well worth it. Hope this helps.

For sure a work of art with a price that shows. It would have been better to compare it to the GB Wildlife hatchet since they are both hatchets. Lifting the log over your head is of course not energy conserving. Better use a baton. There's a lot of 'knife stuff' you can do with a good hatchet but not all. Of course a hatchet is better at splitting prepared logs but that's more a homesteading situation. Out in the bush it's rare to find prepared logs and a prepared chopping block to split them on. For the proper use of the ax and hatchet I recommend Mors Kochanski's (RIP) video's on the subject.

The hard work/R&D was done by our forefathers... They were masters of the axe and associated edge tools - A small hatchet is a useful tool for light processing/fire preparation along with other duties like carving while a bigger half/boys axe are a more suitable tool more substantial duties. If you're going to split wood do it with a splitting axe.
