The thing about 1500 being “a good rating for a ten year old”, is that it’s putting it on the mindset of a chess player, and not the general public. What a majority of your viewers probably do not understand, is that chess takes thousands of hours of study and practice to achieve an expert level, and super GMs like magnus can beat experts without a queen on their board (watch Hikaru play “odds” if you don’t believe me). The game has an exponential curve of strength, and therefore you can’t put magnus on the same scale as anyone, or the scale will tell you that people who have devoted their lives are weak. 1500 is the strength of a club level tournament player, and it’s nothing to sneeze at. The ten year olds that you’re referring to have been studying the game since the first grade and have played a thousand games, they aren’t run of the mill. At 1500, you are vastly stronger than any unrated player who has never studied and analyzed their games on a tournament level. Don’t eat so much humble pie, be proud of your accomplishment, but be aware that the leagues only get meaner and meaner at every class increment going forward 👍

30:57 Just a bit of instructive moment, you can just leave the knight for free, since the king cannot leave the pawn. If king takes knight, then you just promote the pawn. Very good game and nice find of that f5 move! :)

If you still need a good d4 setup, I recommend the Queen’s Indian Defense. The basic strategy of the opening is to fight for light square control, particularly for the control of the d5 and e4 squares. Your worst piece will be the b8 Knight, so try to trade that off. Also, it’s a fairly simple setup. The one problem, however, is that it’s pretty transpositional. That may not be a problem if you know a lot of opening theory for d4, but it is quite a bit of opening theory to learn. It can transpose into the Nimzo-Indian, potentially the Bogo-Indian, certain lines in the Queen’s Gambit Declined, and white can even force it to be a Catalan. So, if you want to learn it, you might want to consider learning some other d4 openings. Also, if you do happen to use it, remember that if white can play e4, then he will often be strategically better, so fight to prevent that move.

My favourite d4 setup as black is to play an immediate c5. If they take you get a really fun game, if they do something else like push d5 you get a super weird position which at my sort of level favours the side more familiar with it.

I love your explanations, they help me understand how to think about chess way more than just learning tactics or openings or whatever. Trying to think in terms of threat and pressure has stepped my game up a lot.

Hey, NL, when you're trying to figure out why the computer is suggesting another move in analysis, you can also look under the "Ne4 is good" or whatever comment and see the line that the computer takes after that in small gray font. I think you can even click through it. That might help better understand why something is a blunder, mistake, or inaccuracy, without always having to piece it together all on your own (although I love to see you puzzle through it!). I haven't seen you defer to that yet, so I just wanted to make sure you knew. Keep up the great series! I'm loving it and it's reigniting my love of the game. Edit: oops. Someone already made this point. Oh, well.

POG E! nice game dude! Id suggest you do a couple of the default puzzles on endgames situations. If you just see a couple of those end game puzzles and theory, that business with the pawns and king at the end there will kinda just become automatic
