Imagine having a Batfleck show on HBO Max, canonically happening before Birds of Prey, with all the Batman bad guys we saw in the DCEU, including Black Mask, Joker, Harley, Crock, Deadshot, Deathstroke, Boomerang, Peacemaker, etc…

there was that nightwing mini series with deathstroke that was actually pretty good even though it was too short but black mask wasn't in it

ColdCrashPictures said it it best in his analysis of the movie, but as a fan of Black Mask long before BoP, even I think they got him really right and so many people saying he wasn't "intimidating" enough I think missed the point. They got being intimidating confused with being cool or suave, but I don't think Roman was ever that type of badguy. Even in the comics he was always living with this vengeful attitude towards his parents, he threw fits all the time, and it was clear he had major insecurity issues and felt emasculated. So he did all these horrible things and ruined countless lives to both take his anger out on the world and to make sure nobody would challenge his position of power that he used to get whatever he wanted. Many seem to want Roman to be more like a more modern Joker or Thanos were we got these larger than life grandiose figures whose evil acts are framed as meticulously crafted actions all about a huge message from somebody who knows so much and how everything really works, but that's not Black Mask. And that's what makes him so scary. Roman is not a person whom you can really look up to as any kind of visionary or man somehow ahead of his time. He's a selfish, arrogant, spoiled, monster who can use his power that was basically gifted to him against anybody he wants however he wants. Which is also the story for a lot people we would describe as "monsters" living in the real world. Edit: Wanna know why one of the many reasons reactionaries despised this movie? It's because they saw Black Mask and the movie made it abundantly clear his toxicity, abuse, and predatory behavior is not something noble, genius, or revolutionary. They wanted another Tyler Durden or Walter White to mistakenly idolize, but instead they got a villain who looked straight into their eyes and told them: "This is wrong."

@@Accountnolongerinuse Eh, even in those he was still a manbaby, really. He just did a better job of hiding it. His backstory from the comics was that he was incredibly butthurt about the fact his bad business practices cause the downfall of his father's business. And in the Arkham games one noticeable thing about him is that despite his appearance, he goes down as easily as any other thug in the game when you fight him.

He’s slightly more immature in here than the comics. The only difference is that comic black mask has himself more under control.

Yes very cool the problem is he died so quickly. That’s a big problem with DC it introduces characters says they’re part of the same universe but then kills them off or never reuses them. What’s the point of it all being in the same universe then the DCEU was a mess glad James Gunn is coming around to fix things up.

@@InjusticeJosh I kinda agree but it’s not like he was gonna be reused anyway, that’s probably why they killed him off. I wish he was, since he’s so good, but whatever. Said James Gunn completely ignored Harley’s story in this movie and put her back in the Squad without explaining what happened to Cass. If anything, he’s going to make as much of a mess, so I highly doubt he’s is going to “fix” things. I’d be surprised if his Superman movie is actually good. Anyway, what does all of that have to do with my point?

@@kanyerahming It lessens the character’s importance if he’s dead and won’t return as Black Mask again. All this buildup only for the audience to be robbed of seeing more of that. And sure you can ignore it’s inclusion in a grander universe, but that’s not why I watch these movies. Also not sure Gunn had anything to do with Harley’s characterization if he had no involvement in Birds of Prey. He was not responsible for the disjointed characterization, especially after taking into consideration all the real life drama of leaving Marvel for it. With the DCU he’s now more in charge of his characters and will surely ensure character cohesion. For example I believe he directed the scene where the Guardians show up in Infinity War even though he was not the main director. Stuff like that is what Marvel allowed him and other creators to do. Now I haven’t watched Peacemaker so I couldn’t say whether the characters flow seamlessly from film to tv. That’s a good example of whether his universe will work or not.

@@PautinoPR The crazy thing is that I think Origins has the best story out of all the games and I think it's a damn good origin story for Batman and the Joker...BUT I still think Roman got shafted. Birds of Prey is perhaps my favorite DCEU movie and one of the reasons was that, wearing the mask a lot or NOT wearing the mask a lot, the writers, directors, and McGregor focused on what makes Black Mask so scary and interesting to me. The true horrors of what an insecure feeling of emasculation can bring.
