I run gnarly trails on our 3 local peaks, several times a week in Vibram FiveFinger Sypridons (since 2012). It literally HURTS to see what everyone wears and has their children in, and I know they're drinking the kool-aid from Are-EEE-eye, and everywhere else. So sad to see these folks lumbering along. I wear Vivo Barefoot Primus Trail FGs as my daily, and as my work shoe as a mechanic. I'd hike or backpack in a pair, without question... if I didn't love the FiveFingers so much. Keep up the great content, and getting the message out there.

Something I've noticed fitting these shoes is that the rubber/plastic reinforced brace connecting the lace to the heel on the magna style shoes gives you a lot more options to control how far your foot gets pulled into the heel. I have the issue that many shoes leave a lot of space at the heel and have my foot kindof swimming in the front of the shoe. The magnas cure this for me, which is a gamechanger for my feet

Very good video! I've got the Vivobarefoot Hydra Esc based on your recommendation. How does the Hydra Esc compared with the Magna Lita and Primus Trail for hiking?
@TheBarefootStrengthProject

Thank you 🙌🏽. Sick, great choice in shoe and a great question! I’d say it’s on par with the Primus Trail in terms of capabilities. The grip is a bit better on the Hydra but the comfort is a bit better on the Trail, so it’d probably boil down to what you wanted to do and over what distance!

thanks for this video, it's really useful to see the two models compared side by side like this. I'm curious as to which model Vivo or otherwise) might be best for wet-weather walking and keeping your feet dry, do you (or anyone else out there) have an opinion or recommendations? - thanks!
@TheBarefootStrengthProject
@TheBarefootStrengthProject 10 ай бұрын
For sure! If it's walking on tarmac or gravel paths etc where you don't need ankle cover, then the Primus Trail All Weathers. If you're planning on getting wet-wet and want some ankle cover then something like the Tracker Forest ESC that you treat well with regular leather waxing to retain it's waterproofing! (Both Vivo)

No worries! They are great boots but yes, I think so. Look into their FG (firm ground) or ESC variants, they’ll hold up much better on concrete and tarmac while still having good grip on trails 🤙🏽

Hello! Thank you for reviews! Great job! Does the support insert in Magna rub ankle too much? I'm currently deciding between Magna Light SG and Primus Trail 3. I have experience wearing the Adidas Free Hiker Cold RDY and they have worn my ankles down to scratches. I understand that Vivo is a completely different story, but I want to know for sure so as not to harm my ankles. Thank you!

Hello! Thank you - I haven’t had any issues but I’d recommend wearing them with socks that cover that section of your ankle if you plan on doing any distance to be on the safe side. The material is very soft and flexible though so had no issues with no socks for this video. I had a bit of an issue with Primus Trail III (5th toe rubbing on raised sole), I’d checkout the review I did when you get a moment

What size are you wearing that the Prius Knit FG weight only 180g? I have this pair in size 45 and they are 350g or 700 a pair, quite a bit difference… Also, Vivo’s website says the Primus Knit are 400g and the Magna Lite are 312g. Not sure what size are they referring to and whether it is for one shoe or a pair.
@Dread221083
@Dread221083 3 ай бұрын
The weight for one shoe is twice time higher. Accordingly the vivobarefoot official site, the magna lite is 324g per shoe, and the primus trail knit 400g ! That's the downside of vivos running shoes. They are quite heavy for shoe with no padding. For strict trail running shoes it is quite heavy. Merrell vapor / trail glove, or mesa trail (even the terraflex) are much lighter. HOWEVER, for hiking shoes, they are amazing.

Is the tread of the magnus lite the same as the primus trail iii sg? How does it perform on road sections?
@TheBarefootStrengthProject
@TheBarefootStrengthProject 8 ай бұрын
Yes it is and it depends on how much road you're talking about. Short bursts every now and then wouldn't be an issue but if you're planning on doing extended sections on road/tarmac then the FG soles will serve you better. With the lugs being spread out so far (for soft ground traction), they build up a lot of heat on tarmac which accelerates the break down of the rubber pretty substantially.

You think the outsole nubs of the Magna Lite would burn out pretty quickly if I only wear them on hard ground?
@TheBarefootStrengthProject
@TheBarefootStrengthProject 26 күн бұрын
Hard like packed dirt, no but a high friction hard surface like tarmac where the lugs will build up heat then yes, quicker than you'd like! Checkout their FG (firm ground) or ESC alternatives as they'll wear much better 🙌🏼

I have a pair of magna sg. I am usually a size 10.5 US i sized up to an 11. However still when going down hill (20% grade) i feel my toes hitting the front of the shoe. So you have any recommendations? I wear smart wool thin socks.
@TheBarefootStrengthProject
@TheBarefootStrengthProject 3 ай бұрын
Proper lacing is generally the best way to fix that. If you're sitting in a chair, try extending your leg till your toes point up at about 45 degrees and heel is in contact with the floor. Then, with the shoe on your foot, push the heel down into the floor, adjusting the lacing to provide a snug fit, particularly from the midfoot into the lower ankle making sure to not make it so tight your feet have no space to swell into. Hopefully that solves the issue for you!

Do you size up in any of these? I've ordered a pair in my normal size to realise that the sizer tool suggested to go size up 🤦‍♀️
@TheBarefootStrengthProject
@TheBarefootStrengthProject 7 ай бұрын
Depends on how roomy you like them, initially I ordered true to size which worked great for me, but after a while my feet actually grew (as all the ligaments and tendons that were locked up from years of normal shoes started to relax) so now I'm consistently wearing a size up from my old shoes

I have the Magna Lites and while I think they're some of the best looking Vivos (their recent models are really nice), unfortunately for me, they are by far the worst fitting. If I cinch the down enough, they dig in over the top of my foot, if I don't cinch them down enough they'll give me horrendous blisters on the ball of my foot on even short walks. And the laces are 3 miles long. WHY? I love my Magna Forests and my Trail SGs, so thought these would be a no brainer. I regret not sending them back when I had the chance. Had they been a good fit I'd be looking at buying the new colour which look awesome. Vivos are a bit hit and miss so I'd always advise to try them and if you're not happy with them use their 100 day returns.
@TheBarefootStrengthProject
@TheBarefootStrengthProject 11 ай бұрын
That sucks… I haven’t had any of those issues (despite wearing them with zero socks and varying degrees of tightness ) so unfortunately can’t relate but you’re right, the 100 day return policy is a god send - I’ve had to use it a couple of times (tracker Decon low top and I think the all weather soft grounds)

Hi! I recently found your channel and have been learning more about the barefoot shoe transition. Super informative. I just moved to Boston so I'll be walking on concrete a lot and was wondering if you have recommendations for good barefoot shoes if you live in a city. I saw that you said you may need a bit more heel cushion for hard surfaces (egg demo) and was a bit lost on where to look first.

That’s a great question and there’s definitely some great options out there. One would be to buy a traditional pair of barefoot shoes, like vivo, then double up on insoles. The other would be to buy a higher stack option - I have a video coming out on a pair made by a company called ‘Bahe’ this weekend so keep your eye out for that!
