Hi guys, today we are taking a look at the M7 bayonet for the M16 and other rifles.
These have fantastic blades but terrible workmanship south of the cross guard.
For close up photos of all markings, check out my Instagram page, linked to profile.

Thank you for your video. Regarding 5:47, on the M7 Bayonet there is a gap between the grip and the crossguard and a gap between the grip and the pommel. These gaps were deliberate to allow clearance to mitigate the possibility of cracking on the plastic grip from too tight flush contact with the steel terminal ends. Regarding 11:16 on the locket of the M8A1 Scabbard, the marking “B.M. CO.” was for the Beckwith Manufacturing Company which was located in Dover, New Hampshire. Regarding 12:01, the marking “VP” was for the Victory Plastics Company which was located in Hudson, Massachusetts.

Even recently made M7s by OKC still have those gaps. Doesn't seem to effect utility in any way. The M9 bayonets are better all around utility knives, but these m7s were better combat knives.

The difference between the M5 and M6 bayonet is actually that the M5 has a stud on the cross guard that inserts into the end of the M1 gas tube, while the M6 has a ring that fits around the M14 muzzle device. The M7 shared the same bakelite handle with post-1954 M4 bayonets for the M1 carbine. MIL-B-1309 was the specification for the M1917, M4, M5, M6, and M7 bayonets. In Revision E (08MAY1975), paragraph 3.4, the specification states that, "Unless otherwise specified on the drawings, all parts shall be interchangeable between similar items." When fitted to an AR-15 or M16 with bayonet lug, the M7 ring sits as far aft on the flash hider as possible. Because distance between the M16 bayonet lug and flash hider was greater than the M1 carbine, which had no flashider, the M7 bayonet tang was slightly longer. But because the grip is interchangeable with the M4 bayonet, there is a noticeable gap on original M7s. Revision E of the specification remained current until inactivation on 08SEP2020. Any example of an M7 without a gap above and below the grip is probably not a US contract item manufactured in accordance with MIL-B-1309.

Was issued this item in the USMC in the early issue dates. Reason I commented was my laundry number in boot camp was 19. If you were in the USMC you would know and always remember that. Awesome content my Aussie friend. Subbed.

KA-BAR definitely used since the hated marine stilletos of WW2 and possibly even the WW1 trench knives were issued. They were adopted in 42, but way before that soldiers in the know grabbed KaBar's as general utility knives (sometimes the army would provide bowie's but that is a bit if an overcorrection, most soldiers just wanted a good can opener) However, I've never seem a bayonet mounted KA-BAR (have seen bayonett mounted Bowie's lol) and my guess it that the stilleto/trench style thin stabby blades were much more effective, especially as the guns get lighter (don't want to be using an AR's pencil barrel as a pry bar) You go way back you see some basic utility knife style bayonetts but often they avoid the barrel or it'd so damn solid your not going to hurt it anyway.

Greetings from Arizona, USA. Thank you for your video, as it is very informative. I have a Colt M7 purchased around ten or so years back, which supposedly was one one of 20,000 "new old stock" originally manufactured during the Vietnam conflict which were found in a warehouse. There were a few different online retailers offering them with prices hovering somewhere between a low of $150 upwards of $300 USD each. They sold out at the 3 or 4 online retailers relatively quickly. The last time I saw any for sale (around a year and a half after they first appeared), likely from that batch, they were selling (being scalped) for around $500 or so USD on ebay.

I have one of those. And I always figured that the gap between cross guard and the handle is on purpose to allow for movement/flex, while e.g. trying to break something open, or remove it when it got stuck. edit: my scabbard was made inW. Germany. Germany howerever never used that bayonet

I have a number of these, the best being made by Eichhorn. Another decent quality one is marked "Colt", and "W. Germany". I have one with the hilt and scabbard in desert sand colour, made for the first Gulf War. I was on standby for this conflict, but in the event, it was over before I got to take part. I have been a collector since I bought my first bayonet as a youth in 1968. At that time, most junk shops had a decent selection of bayonets, many being souvenirs from the Great War.

This off subject a little…but here about 2015 I had purchased a Springfield M1A rifle and of course I needed to purchase the bayonet lug flash hider and a M7 bayonet,so at the time Fulton Armory had new in the box unissued M7 bayonet’s and m8a1 scabbard’s for sale alone with the flash hider so I ordered the set up …the bayonet arrived unopened from the factory in a sealed plastic bag with a brown sealed box marked m6 bayonet with a bunch of numbers n stuff and inside the box was wrapped in silver plastic bag of some sort the bayonet…a M7 BOC manufactured bayonet…that doesn’t fit the M14 or M1A …I don’t understand how a sealed from the factory bayonet with all the proper numbers could have the wrong bayonet in it …the date was 6/68 …kinda crazy government screw up I guess….

I have to say, my scabbard broke. I was very annoyed. The entire plastic sheath snapped and it is unusable. I am curious about grabbing an M10 now, as I suspect based on the age of the original design, it probably did not use the most robust plastics.

I want to buy a M7 bayonet and cut the barrel loop off of it so it will be easier to carry as a self-defense knife. I found a new in foil packaged M7 for $100 dollars. ⚠️ Do you recommend me to buy a COLT marked M7 bayonet or a IMPERIAL marked M7 bayonet ?
