I had a maternity nurse tell me about how she'd hear family in the delivery room react to a newborn boy crying by saying stuff like he had strong lungs and react to a newborn girl crying by saying "she's going to be a bitch". I couldn't stop thinking about it for days. It still haunts me.

I think this is why most little girls go through that “I hate pink and girl stuff” phase whether it’s true or not, cause it’s shoved down our throats for so long that we put our feet down and stop
@MariaTex3

Bro, you're so right. It's also part of the deal with girls that go through an "I'm not like the other girls" phase. The traditionally "girly" things and related things are pushed at them or seem to be pushed at them all the time, and so they end up vehemently rejecting it. It really sucks.

another notable fact: with gendered products, the “female alternative” is oftentimes for expensive than the men’s.

This is a persistent lie. One, different colors of products literally do usually cost different. This can be due to the cost of the dye or how it impacts sales or other factors. Two, SO WHY DON'T WOMEN JUST USE THE MALE VERSION. Actual conversation. Woman: "It's so sexist these deodorants are the same why is the female one more expensive. " me: "so use the male version." Her: "No, the ingredients are different, I would never pay for the inferior male version." (@-@) So maybe that's why they cost different. Her: "See you're sexist."

@@KevinJDildonik I can assume women don't use men's products because... They're too harsh (Just look at 3-in-1 shampoo/conditioner/body wash. It does none of those jobs properly). Aftershave and beard balm are some of the only really 'quality' men's products because women don't generally want to have/groom a beard (with exceptions, of course, as there is to most things).
@real8304
@real8304 2 ай бұрын
@@KevinJDildonik dunno, I actually do just use the male version, when it makes sense (specifically a men's deodorant). Harder with clothes though. What often frustrates me is not only how female clothes are more expensive, but also how often I would find them being of worser quality than the mens even if it's the exact same model of smth (fabric being thinner or not having fricking normal sized pockets in jeans that can fit a phone, omg)... but like, the mens clothes design might not appeal to me or classically - not have my size. Or some products only exist for men, so I won't have my size by default. So that's some unsolvable issues almost discriminative in nature that do exist. Probably there are examples with some products to mirror this from the other side.

My favorite quote is from my sociolinguistics prof who started our course by saying "Gender is a made up construct and you'll just have to accept that and move on". He was great, and great at teaching too. I grew up very conservative christian and the gender norms that were pushed on me as a closeted person made me so miserable up until 23 when I moved out. The only salvation I had was my dad who, after divorcing my mom, always let me wear and play with whatever toys I had. He'd let me join him in the garage and help with his car if I wanted to, but would also help me play with my barbie house if I wanted to play with that. He's still very traditional, but he's always tried his best to never force me to be more feminine than I want to be, and since I came out he's grown so much because I'm his child, whereas my mom won't ever accept it nor be on my side in confrontations with my extreme relatives (if that ever were to happen). I'm breaking the stereotype of lgbtq people not having a supportive dad, and I love that for me.

I also hate when sports are gendered. There are sports for girls and boys, but as a teenage girl sometimes when I say “Oh yea I play soccer too!” to someone they’re like “Soccer’s for men.” (real story btw :) ). It’s tiring to hear people say softball is easier than baseball, yes some parts are, but some parts aren’t THEY ARE DIFFERENT SPORTS! I’m just sick of hearing it because if women weren’t allowed to play it, why’d they make sports for women. Sorry for the vent, that’s just all my opinion.
@MisterMistopher
@MisterMistopher 2 ай бұрын
Here to say I completely agree. As a boy I really felt like I was expected to just know all the sports teams by heart and tune into games and get really into games but during practices I'd always wait for it to be over. I feel like sports shouldn't be treated like a gendered activity. Some people are just not interested in something like that. It turns girls away from something they could really enjoy and forces pressure on boys to do something not all of them want to do, all in great worship of the mighty Y chromosome. Although that's basically the story of gender norms in a nutshell

The worst gendered product I've come in contact with is for sure "Pinky Gloves". It was a product on German Shark Tank and essentially a pink one-time-use plastic glove to remove a tampon with (of course, it was pink), so women wouldn't have to touch their 'gross' hygiene products and (of course more importantly) so men didn't have to see a tampon in the bathroom bin. The male sharks were ecstatic and called it revolutionary, but after the episode aired, the company had to backtrack and apologise pretty quickly. So yeah, women apparently need pink gloves in order not to touch their own bodies or make men feel uncomfortable. Hooray!

dogs arent even sexually dimorphic ffs😭 why are we imposing gender roles onto them as an interesting side note, i have a cat and a snake, and ive noticed that even besides the general rule that unknown gender of animal=male, people are significantly more likely to gender my snake as male and my cat as female, even though in truth its the reverse. i think its because we associate being gracile, soft and temperamental with being feminine, and being primarily composed of muscle, teeth and anger issues as being masculine, regardless of how aware we may be of those stereotypes or how true they actually are. its kinda funny how animals who do not have the concept of gender whatsoever get lumped in with our cultural assumptions about what it means to be a man or woman. I suppose the animals themselves dont really care either way though.

No matter how good your skin is people notice when you’re two shades closer to Trump, and have the same even complexion every morning. By the end of the day it can become more noticeable, especially for people with moderate to oily skin. The concealer is good but it does wear off, again to keep it unnoticeable I didn’t apply heavily. I happily wear it with my mates and for going out. As a woman who worked as a mechanic for years it was one of the most annoying things in the world to see tools marketed towards women that were actually more expensive because they were pink and sometimes they weren't even high quality. Since I was the only woman mechanic in most of the shops that I ever worked in, the only real advantage to having pink tools in the shop would be that everyone would know who the tool belonged to. Of course, I could accomplish this task by just carving my name in my tools or painting them whatever the hell color I wanted. When I got my big toolbox for the shop, all the men expected me to get a pink one but my favorite color was orange so I got the biggest and brightest orange toolbox that I could find. Tools are for all genders.

Trying to get her a mesh glove was such a pain because 'they don't make that for women, it won't be in your size' said the office. As if there's never been a woman in the meat processing industry, like she's the very first one and we're somehow writing history. Eh makeup was first worn by both genders at the same time tens or even hundreds of thousands of years before written history when we were still hunter gatherers as part of ceremony or practical needs, and throughout time has continued to be worn by both genders even to this day, although a stigma of males wearing it came about in the 19th century with the rise of the cosmetic industry as part of the Industrial Revolution, but don’t let this fool you as men in powerful and influential positions all around the world still routinely wear makeup, it’s just not vocally stated, again due to this relatively recent stigma.

so glad someone brought this style of marketing up, was the reason why i had childhood trauma gender wise especially since im not into dangerous stuff nor into sports, cars, and wondered before i got the internet "was i alone on this earth?" then found reddit and felt so heard with hundreds of people saying similar opinions and likes/dislikes, so in a way the internet at one point cured my depression! problem is stuff for boys, becomes stuff for men which makes my gender sound more aggressive or tough which im not in the slightest aside from building thick skin but thats ok. id rather be an approachable person open to any idea than be a person seeking self approval of their fragile masculinity so they surround themselves with useless more expensive stuff. its like putting a smiley face on a can of soda, its still the same soda but with an emotion on it meaning it "must make you happy!" all this gender stuff is just a placebo effect basically, still have no idea how companies/society accepts this behavior for so long. glad to be in the 2020's and not the 1920's its nice to see something so black and white fizzle out although its fizzling slower than id hope, but any tough guys reading this comment, try on some skinny jeans, play some joji, comb your hair, have a fruity drink and realize nothing has changed about you! may feel strange at first but its because like many guys out there you've restricted and limited yourself so you cant ever enjoy all of what life has to offer.

It can be helpful if you think the Bible is only about dudes walking around talking about heaven, because a woman-focused Bible would have more interpretations that are favorable to women and also the always great highlight of the story about a woman stabbing a guy in the head with a tent spike (Jael!).

@@FrenkTheJoy I think then that would be more “woman of the Bible” rather then “Bible for women” because even that shouldn’t be gendered.

not surprising honestly, Christianity is big on gender roles (though more progressive churches do make an effort to move away from that) so it really only makes sense that they try to instill it young. More fundamentalist churches will go so far as to separate boys and girls for separate, gendered lessons.
