The Book of Boba Fett is the 2nd live action Star Wars Series to release on Disney Plus and is a successor to The Mandalorian Season 2. The Book of Boba Fett follows Boba Fett and Fennec Shand as they try to gain power on Tatooine. After the first two seasons of The Mandalorian were borderline universally praised, how did The Book of Boba Fett do with audiences? Well let's just say most people weren't happy. In this video essay, we discuss Star Wars: The Book of Boba Fett 1 Year Later

Back in 1983 when Return of the Jedi released in theaters. Nerds across the word screamed in pain and disappointment when they saw their favorite bounty hunter fall into the sarlacc pit and die. According to Jabba the Hutt, he would be devoured and suffer for a thousand years. Over the decades Boba Fett’s backstory was explored and he was given more depth, but everyone still knew his inevitable death. In the old expanded universe, Boba Fett actually climbed out of the sarlacc pit and survived. So once the canon was rebooted, fans speculated if Boba Fett would still crawl out of the sarlacc pit and survive in the new canon. Flash forward to October 30th 2021, in the premier episode of the mandalorian season 2, we got our first look at boba fett alive and well after the return of the jedi. And then 7 weeks later we were teased to the book of boba fett, the show that would center around the bounty hunter. So not only after all these decades did we learn Boba had lived, but he was also getting his own story that so many people had wished for. The Book of Boba Fett was the 2nd show to come out in the mandoverse. When this show finally wrapped up, how did fans view it? Was it the show of their dreams? Did it match the quality of the previous 2 mandalorian seasons? Was Boba Fett the badass we all thought him to be? Hello everybody and welcome to another video, my name is the gold man and today we’re gonna talk about the book of boba fett.
To begin this video essay, I want to discuss worldbuilding. An aspect of Star Wars I feel isn’t discussed enough these days anymore. To no one's surprise, there are two different sides to worldbuilding in this series. Firstly there's the main part of the series that takes place on tatooine, and then there’s the worldbuilding that focuses mostly on Mando and his journey. So let’s begin with Tatooine. The worldbuilding here is interesting because Tatooine is already the most prominently shown planet in the Star Wars saga. Btw, I’m just talking about the live action stuff here. You guys know how much I love the clone wars and rebels, but a good portion of the people who are watching this series haven’t watched those shows, only the movies and the mandalorian. So how well does this show build on the world that is tatooine? Before we answer that, what did we already know about tatooine going into this series? Based on the movies, there were 3 different sides of tatooine that we saw. There’s mos eisley and the kinda the wilderness of tatooine that we saw in a new hope, then there's the criminal aspect of tatooine that we saw in return of the jedi, and then there’s mos espa that we saw in the phantom menace and attack of the clones. Tatooine was known for mostly having a variety of different species, none that were really native to the planet. The ones that are mostly native to tatooine are the jawas and the tusken raiders. The jawas get a little bit more fleshing out in the mandalorian season 1, but not much. But the tusken Raiders on the other hand, that is where this series really excels. From the movies, the tusken raiders were literally seen as savages. A New Hope treats them as such, and attack of the clones treats them even worse because they are responsible for brutally murdering Shmi Skywalker.

Whats so weird about the show imo is how they got Boba’s personality in mando correct. He’s ruthless by having Fennac aim a blaster at a baby but with a sense of honor as once he gets his armor he helps Din with getting his son back. Then come Book of Boba Fett he’s this kind hearted man. I think it would have been cool to see him become an honorable leader but from what I saw he didn’t go from a ruthless man into a honorable man he’s just honorable now.

Yes this and Kenobi were originally going to be movies but because of the reception of Solo they pulled the plug on them and any future “A Star Wars Story” projects. Which while the movies feel more grandiose then the shows I love that we get more content and worldbuilding in the shows. Though it really hurt Kenobi and Fett as those should’ve been movies. Other stories like Solo or Andor are better suited for a show format.

I find it insane how Dave falloni wrote the episode where both Luke and Asoka act completely out of character saying how grogu needs to abandon his family when they both are the 2 characters who disagree with that and have had whole arcs about that, literally Luke’s whole arc is about him not abandoning the people he loves when kenobi and yoda want him to.

See I interpret that scene very differently. Luke isn't making the same mistake as the old Jedi. Quite the opposite. He isn't forcing Grogu to become a Jedi. Contrary to popular belief the prequel era Jedi never kidnapped any children, most parents have them up voluntarily and if they didn't want to give their children up the Jedi respected their choice. Still, that was the parents making a choice not the children themselves. The Jedi couldn't even fathom that maybe becoming a Jedi wasn't everyone's dream. I mean look at how surprised they are whenever someone leaves the order like Dooku or Ahsoka. Luke is different. Grogu reached out to him for help so Luke helped him. He taught him enough to not be a danger to himself or others around him and to defend himself if the Empire comes after him again. He gives him basic lessons but he doesn't force him to become a Jedi. He let's him choose if he wanted to continue his training and become a Jedi or return to Mando and he respects his choice.
@Ytomany
@Ytomany Жыл бұрын
@@-Maxi.exe03 Its not a matter of interpretation bro, what is luke, the only jedi thats allowed to have a family and loved ones? And the show says none of what your saying bro its just they messed up the script lol. Interpretations are cool and all i love it for the prequels but in this case we know how all over the place the writing is in this era, plus Asoka is telling mando not to see him when in reality she would be the character to go like its good for him to have a relationship with someone while training he considers family, they just wanted Grogu back for season 3 because they think he is what is selling the show, so they made luke and her act out of character to accomplish that.

Excellent points. My heart drops when I think of all the wasted potential in this show as well as the corporate meddling forcing a premature reunion between Grogu and Din. I just can’t believe Favreau and Filoni would have reunited these two characters so quickly and in such an odd way (Luke doesn’t even include a note with Grogu to explain what happened or have a holo-conversation with Din making sure Grogu made it there safely). I have to believe Disney executives forced this reunion on the show, which really makes me nervous for Mando S3.

Imagine a parallel storyline with Cad Bane as a toxic mentor of young Boba Fett. Then Cad Bane is the object of his inner and outer stories. The inner journey is to "unlearn" what Cad Bane taught him, to find himself and let go of the "villain" that Cad Bane turned him into. Developing healthy/positive relationships with Tuskens and other people on Tatooine can be part of that. Maybe even some material in the Return of the Jedi timeframe. And then his outer storyline is the confrontation with his former mentor Cad Bane himself. That gives Boba a proper story arc and makes the fight between Boba and Cad an earned story culmination. You could even have a parallel fight where the young Boba gets his @#$ kicked and helmet dented by Cad Bane - setting the stakes for the rematch. The tragedy is how much the "whole" of the show fell short of the parts they got right and how much potential it had. (Ohh while I'm at it - an army of Tuskens ride in as the cavalry to help Boba in the finale, take out the two Mando episodes, open with them and make them part of a split season 3, maybe even make 3 or 4 episodes, you could easily split Ep 5 into two episodes. And maybe take out the flashbacks and create interlude chapters that can be integrated into a new Mandolarian "watch order" like an episode with Mando and Fennec that you watch after S1E5 "the gunslinger" )

When he was a child, it was just him and his father who was often never there, then as a young bounty hunter he learned very early on not to trust his colleagues. Boba has forever been my favorite character and I always wanted to see his more honorable side that we see in clone wars explored more. Mods drove Vespa bikes, which is what inspired the speeders in The Book of Boba Fett. It's actually a pretty good concept. Every generation of teenagers does something to stand out and break taboo. The execution could have been a little better, but I thoroughly enjoyed the show. Star Wars has always been a bit pulpy and satirical like that. It's part of what makes it so appealing to all age groups and sub-cultures. For example, the Rebels and Ewoks in Star Wars were inspired by the Viet Cong, the Empire by the Nazis, he Emperor was inspired by Nixon, chewie is supposed to represent a faithful dog, many of the titles and institutions are taken from ancient Rome, the Jedi represent the Samuri, Shoalin Monks and the Knights Templar, Han Solo is a cowboy, the deathstar represented the nuclear threat of the cold war etc. etc. etc. I could go on and on and on. Mando and bobas relationship is not as weird/complicated as you think it may be. If you recall in episode 6 when boba meets mando, there is a small, unspoken Scene where mando is searching the wreckage of the razor crest , and boba assumingely realizing that mando just cares about the child AKA his son. Something we all know boba relates to. Mando and boba are both outcasts in their own cultures. And they obviously trust each other. And to a honor bound warrior, trust is everything. So hopefully that helps you see things in a different light.

In fact, the central tenet of the series is five words (three in Mando'a): Aliit ori'shya tal'din -- Family is more than bloodline. Best. "Star Wars" novels. EVER. Anyone who hasn't read them should definitely check them out. The first book starts everything off a little slowly, but from then on, it's all amazing. Action, intrigue, raw emotional rollercoasters . . . cannot recommend them enough. 33:30 -- "How's a casual viewer supposed to know that they need to watch a show called "The Book of Boba Fett" between "The Mandalorian" Seasons 2 and 3?" Because Disney is arrogant enough to believe that they have no casual viewers -- only rabid, adoring cultists who are voracious consumers of ALL their content. 😉

in regard to the Pyke/Pike, I think the reason we don't see multiple different looking 'types' is because its specifically focused on the 'armed forces' of the race whereas With the Tusken, we see the whole community. Also, the series was focused on Boba fighting them, but the series wasn't focusing on that, it was focused on a few different plot lines revolving around Boba Fett.

Here's an idea to make TBOBF better. Add two more episodes between 6 and 7. One episode about Boba, Din, and crew going to Obi Diah to try and stop the Pyke's plot on Tatooine. The other episode that's a set up for the finale and more backstory for Boba set back pre-AOTC on Kamino. The present day scenes can feature the Mos Pelgo militia visiting the palace to help Boba and gang prepare for the fight on Mos Espa and Cobb Vanth recovering from his encounter with Cad Bane. The flashbacks can feature Young Boba, Jango Fett, Lama Su, and Cad Bane on Kamino where Boba learns to be a bounty hunter with Jango and Cad on a training course. Then we get the finale fighting the Pykes in a gang war on Mos Espa which wouldn't be too different from the finale we got except Cobb would play a role in the fight this time and there'd also be a stinger at the end where we see Cad awake and recovered on his ship where his droid Toto healed him after his duel with Boba. Then a Qi'ira reveal on a hologram communicator setting up Crimson Dawn as the antagonists for season 2. Like in your rewrite for the series. Take it how you will. I'd have more details but this is all I can write down for now.

My take on the Boba change (Have only watched the movies, boba and mando shows) was that he took up bounty hunting to deal with his trauma of losing Jango, after falling into the sarlacc and presuming the empire and jabba to be gone, there's nothing left for him to unleash his anger on, which causes him to find a purpose for himself, in this case the tuskens, he's a kind warrior but he still has that bounty hunter fearlessness when the need arises, such as fighting (The fight in Mando s2 being a good example) with Cade Bane, whilst their history could have been more fleshed out, I think acted as a physical representation of what Boba used to be, sort of killing his past self

The issue with the pikes is that the show does show all the culture they have. The pikes are a criminal syndicate that operates almost like a corporation. They deal in rare spices and slaves. They definitely made Boba too much of a “good guy”. He can still be an honorable and a respectable leader, while also being a lethal badass that won’t hesitate to eliminate those that get in the way. Another thing is heavily under utilizing Boba, as well as Cad Bane. Cad without a doubt was such wasted potential. He could’ve been an amazing villain. Introduce him like with his scene with Cobb, beat the everlasting shit out of Boba and Finnic where they barely get away, and then come to the final dual between Boba and Cad where Boba comes out on top (in a more satisfying way than what we were given). Plus, putting in Mandalorian and Grogu re-uniting was kind of a let down. Save that for season 3. I loved it when it happened, but this show is really just Mandalorian season 2.5.

He’s fine to keep living w/the tuskins and knowing where his armor is. Then the bad guys kill his tuskins. He switches back to full Boba mode. Gets back armor. Gets back ship. Acts like crime boss to infiltrate and completely destroy everyone involved in the tuskin deaths. Becomes the town hero. Realizes he likes saving the good guys from the bad guys and is going to continue to do that thru out the galaxy. And that leads to people and warriors flocking to him. And that leads to ruler of new mandalor at his new palace. Seems perfectly simple to me.

9:00 in, you're talking about the "Mod Gang" (Vespa kids)... I have to say, even though I'm less than a month away from being 56 years old, if I were in that universe, AND around that age group, I would have done what they did. I was an outcast at that age, and I remember what it was like to be an outcast in my youth. I could really relate to those kids. Hell, I went to a music and gaming festival recently, and connected better with "young people" (those half my age or lower) because I didn't judge them for their love of whatever franchise they loved. As I said repeatedly, "We are all fans of SOMETHING, and that's why we gather here, and we don't judge anyone for loving what they love." I didn't get a single argument out of anyone for that, because it was true. I think I surprised them, just for my accepting attitude. I was pretty open about having been the "outcast" in my youth, and technically, I still am one. The people I grew up with have gotten old, because they chose to "grow up". I didn't. I chose to remain young in my mind, and while times have changed, not everything has. Outcasts are still looked at sideways, just because they/we are different. It's actually worse for me, because of my age. "Those kids are weird, but they'll grow out of it", they say.... but they look at me as if I've got 3 heads and 8 arms. "What the Hell? Why didn't HE grow out of it?!" they'll say. Because I didn't want to.

The Book of Boba Fett is probably the worst series of all time (not exaggerating) and despite most of Disney's Star Wars being garbage, nothing exept Obi-Wan Kenobi, The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker comes even close to how fucking bad it was.

The Creed is the Reason for Din helping Boba and the fact that Boba helped save Grogu. Din sees Boba for what he is...A Mandalorian or rather a representation of what Mandalorians were. People may deny it but Boba is a Mandalorian, He is what the other Mandalorians are based on. Hell he even comes from a clan that called themselves "The true Mandalorians" The Creed so many Clans have broken is....Mandalorians by creed have to help each other and protect the Mandalorian people. Due to the fact that there are different sects of Mandalorians, A rift has formed and many of the mandalorians have broken that creed basically removing their title as Mandalorians...Even the Armorer who was on the moon failed to come to the aid of the Manalorians on Mandalore during the night of a thousand tears. The Mandalorians have to find a unified code. One that allows for different sects to come together and restore the creed.

So, the BoBF isn’t a stand-alone series. It’s setting up plot points for the future of the entire cohesive story that is the retaking and independence of Mandalore and the downfall of the Imperial Remnants. And how does BoBF tie into this narrative and foreshadow to future events? The same reason that Episode 5 is more about Boba Fett than most would think. In Episode 5, we see The Armorer say, “The songs of eons past foretold of the Mythosaur rising up to herald a new age of Mandalore. Sadly, it only exists in Legends.” As The Armorer says this, she is standing in front of the hanger compartment for her tool cabinet that has a familiar image painted across it’s doors. The Mythosaur skull. However, it’s not just any style Mythosaur skull as we have seen many variations throughout the canon, it is specifically the style that is donned by none other than Boba Fett. And when we look at the scene when The Armorer tells this story, it’s important to pay attention to the message being conveyed. “The Mythosaur will rise up to herald a new age of Mandalore.” And as the Armorer tells the legend, this hints that there is still at least one “Mythosaur” still alive. And being symbolic, as the tales of Mandalorians always are, only one wears the Mythosaur skull, known as the “Mandalorian Crest”, and he lives on Tatooine. The Armorer also specifically uses the word “Legends”. And every time we hear the word “Legend” used in canon, it foreshadows to something in the Expanded Universe being brought into the new canon. From the reintroduction of Death Watch, the Darksaber, the Mythosaur. And the last time legends was mentioned in canon, Ahsoka said “There is always a bit of truth in Legends.” And then we get the reintroduction to Grand Admiral Thrawn into the current canon. And in Legends, Boba Fett takes up the mantle of Mand’alor, leader of the Mandalorians. He restored Mandalorians back to their previously renown strength and power. The Book of Boba Fett has been setting up Boba Fett to be less of a solo, ruthless, vicious bounty hunter and more into the type of leader that the Mandalorians need. And seeing as Din Djarin is reluctant to be a leader, and more so a loyal knight, it’s obvious the direction of the story will be passing the Darksaber to Boba Fett. Who has been actively bettering his mentality, his moral beliefs, and becoming a better melee combatant.

Yes, but let's face it, Boba Fett is no longer a legend, now he is an old man who is anxious about being a bounty hunter and prefers to live in a giant sandbox with emos and banthas, he is not a mandalore, apart from that it seems that they also want to give that position to DIN or grogu by script and favoritism of the author who would not want.

All in all, we now have more Star Wars live action hours than we ever thought was possible. I cannot possibly complain about how much Star Wars we have right now, as someone who grew through the "Dark Ages" between 1983 and 1999, when there was no new live action content for 15 years. Every single live action series has good stuff which makes up for all the shortcomings that the OT and the prequels had, or even for the major shortcoming which the sequels are. The Book of Boba - and for that effect, the Obi-Wan show - only hasthe problem of being a movie script but stretched into a series format, because of how unsuccessful the Han Solo movie was, to cut production and distribution costs and to give some padding to the Disney+ content. I love Book of Boba and no one can tell me otherwise. Obviously it had its obvious shortcomings, but so did the OT and the prequels. Overall it nailed a lot of character traits right, and both had strong finale episodes. As a whole, the quality of the writing and production is obviously inferior to Andor, Ahsoka or Mando Season 1. But that's no excuse NOT to observe the obvious positives.

I think what could've been a good motivation and plot for Boba Fett is to: Control the Tattoine empire/government and change the law to allow Tuskens to become part of their society as a repayment for the past-Tusken tribe that saved Boba Fett. It was already established in S2 of The Mandalorian that the Tuskens and the people of Tattoine hated each other, so it could've been a good way to put aside their differences and unite to survive together or be equals. I'm just spit-balling but that's what I thought it could be.

People have said this alot and its true: you know theres a problem when the only good episodes of a show have fucking nothing to do with the main character

I never really hated it unlike some people although it was not the best show, but it did have some highlights. I really enjoyed the Tusken Raider episodes because for some unknown reason I loved them since I was a child. I think my main problem with the show is that Boba didn't do as much as he should've done, it's almost as they wanted to extend the show but didn't have enough budget for more episodes. It's probably not the case since The Mandalorian should've gotten them some fat stacks, but the series still felt incomplete. I don't think Boba Fett's character is ruined though, they can still do many cool things with him in Season 3 of The Mandalorian as the new Daimyo. Mando visits Tatooine a lot so I think we are guranteed to at least have one episode including him, maybe he will even have a larger army this time around. I would also love to seen more of Black Krrsantan.

The thing that baffles me is why the main theme song for this show is so incredible when the show is kinda just okay.

Over the decades, I knew that Boba Fett falling into the Sarlac Pit was no different than Luke, Leia, Han and Chewie diving into the Death Star trash compactor; he’d be out by lunchtime.

then you're a FANBOY and "SUPERFAN" exactly the WRONG KIND OF FAN that just sends a message to Disney that they can make Starwars in whatever pissy, lazy and unplanned way they like, and Fans like YOU will still just lap it up. All you are is a "Enabler" for Disney to keep interfering in the Creative process of Starwars Stories, preventing them from being "Great."

15:57 I think it will later be revealed that she's force sensitive. 19:04 Cad Bane's death was Anti-climactic because we saw the light flickering at the end hinting that he might not be dead. They like to make us think someone is dead only to turn round say ha! fooled you! Plus, they did absolutely nothing to introduce the character and for people who haven't sat through the whole of clone wars, they wouldn't know who he is, and wouldn't know his relationship with Boba. Same with the Pikes, people who supposed to already know who they are.

I'd say that Luke was subtly pushing Grogu to embrace his passion in order to have him choose the new path that Luke wanted to lead the Jedi towards, almost like Luke was asking if Grogu wanted to continue towards the "tried and true" method which was comfortable, or embrace the new ideology which was supposedly on the table the whole time

I think there's a lot of things in this show that go a lot deeper than we give credit for and we've seen the badass - and we get more in rancor riding, beating cad bane, being shot 60 times and surviving. Plus the renewal of green, red and black in his repaint is a sign of doubling down on Duty, Justice and honoring his father. All that said there's two things that help me enjoy shows like this. F and F are building a larger universe here in which Boba Fett is one character. Because of what happened in bobas canon backstory, there's a limit to what they can do with that character. But when you think about what we saw in the 6 mins of OT from boba... Never see his face, always gets his mark, can be a badass but is kinda clumsy... The Mandalorian is Boba Fett... And through the mandalorian they can do so much more to expand the universe and what it means to be mandalorian. Boba Fett is now once facet of mandalorian culture, as is bo katan, the armorer and the many other elements we are going to potentially seeing in season 3.

With those you mentioned, they are all style with no substance. They don't really earn any of those moments and the moments, when you think on them, are lacking. The Rancor is just for coolness when using Slave I would be far more effective and safer, Din and Boba use no tactics in their standoff and nearly get themselves killed because they want to stand in the middle, Cad Bane's death is done better in a deleted scene and has the worst dialogue in the show. "I'm faster than you" "I have armour" "Lets find out" ??? And no, they aren't expanding on what it means to be Mandalorian. In these 2.5 seasons of Mandalorian, we don't know what makes Din's Mandos different from other Mandos other than "Helmet rule" which doesn't have much depth. Compare that to Legends, even using just Jango onwards shows how complex the mandos could be with the conflict with Original Death Watch and Jaster's Mandos. And that's not even including KoTOR's additions and so on. Boba and Din could have had an interesting conversation on that, with Boba's teachings from Jango conflicting with Din's original upbringing. Plus, that shows the issue. Din has taken all the cool aspects of Boba and left Boba as the empty character we see here. Boba was once the man who said "This is my face" when talking about his helmet, he was the one that led the Mandalorians reluctantly, known as the best hunter. Now that's all gone to Din.

I really love this show sure it had some bad parts but we saw him go through an actual character arc. He was a killer then he found a family (the Tuskens) when this family was taken from him he changes his motive. He just wants a family. Throughout the saga people keep telling him he’s just like his father Cad Bane even says this “You’ve got your fathers blood pumping through your veins.” This show wasn’t about him becoming a leader, it was about him finding a family and proving to people that he can change his fate and be better than Jango. And when he’s in trouble he ignites the killer within not to cause harm but to protect his people. When he’s attacked by assassins he spares them symbolizing that people can change. He doesn’t want to be like other rulers this is shown by his dialogue with fennec. Where she says to him that he should be carried around to show his power and he declines. He faces real struggles with the mayor when he returns the assassin when this approach doesn’t work he becomes the killer we knew him to be. To protect and serve his people. Cad Bane isn’t just a villain but a reflection of his past. And with that he ultimately defeats his past. The show takes his death not as one but as a rebirth and a chance to change.

RE Luke: He shows an incremental improvement over the previous Jedi, but he also sends the kid back to a dangerous planet escorted only by an astromech droid. He can’t be bothered to deliver him himself. In doing that, he puts Grogu in the middle of a chaotic battle between mercenary factions. I’m sorry, but we see in all of this the seeds of his failures with Ben Solo. We see how he didn’t learn enough from the mistakes of the past to understand that emotions need to be processed, not repressed. And the galaxy pays the price 20 years later.
