The Breguet 940 Integral

Louis Breguet has always wanted to master the technical problems. In 1948, he had an idea in mind: to design a plane with the ability to land and take off on short tracks: it was the birth of the concept called "STOL" in English for Short TakeOff and Landing.

Très intéressante vidéo sur un appareil peu connu. J'ai conservé les pages d'un magazine qui présentait cet avion, il y a pas mal d'années, dont un plan en "écorché".

Je me souviens l'avoir vu voler au salon du Bourget, ainsi que son successeur le 941 au Bourget dans les années 60. Mais malgré des performances spectaculaires, ça n'avait pas intéressé les militaires.

This must have been close to optimal. It's crazy that aircraft which take the STOL concept this far are still so rare. Pure VTOL is complex and expensive and imposes high pay load limitations (Fairey Rotodyne, Do 31, Bell Osprey). Therefore VSTOL won the day as far as fighter aircraft are concerned. (Harrier, F35B) On tiny step less far still is extreme STOL. Imagine a WW2 grass field strip surrounded by hidden VSTOL fighter jets. Almost any meadow surrounded by woodland would do. Building expensive air bases was / is however still big business. (Sorry for not commenting in French. In spite of my name I am Dutch.)

You cant make a jet fighter stol, but you can make them vtol. They tried with variable wings, but it dont work for a fighter (but works well for a bomber as the tu-160).

@@polentusmax6100 Ever hard about V/STOL or STOVL? It is actually what made jet VTOL grow up. If you STOL with a VTOL you can take a much heavier load with you. The Harrier does it all the time.

@@marcbrasse747 as you can see from the video, you need airflow over the wings to get stol, vtol uses purely the engine as lift. You cant wash the wings of a jet with a propeler, its too bulky. The alternative is to add carnards and increase the wing area, and reducing the weight. The russian concorde had some retractable canards to help landing. But you cant reduce too much the landing speed because a supersonic jet always will have a small wing.

If you are talking about augmented airflow: What about the Boeing YC 14, In general: As soon as a VTOL jet starts rolling it also starts to produce lift via airflow over the wing. EVERY STOL plane works on that principle. The question is only in how far and how this natural flow is augmented.

@@marcbrasse747 thats a transport aircraft, gigant short turbofans over the gigant straith wings. Jet fighters engines are half of the plane, you cant put it ahead of the wing like in the boing yf 14. Maybe, to use detachable bomb bay that can land itself, similar to that of the b58, you can then reduce the landing weight and get some stol, but you cant do miracles. Saab draken used revesible trust to help braking, as the panavia tornado. That may help too. In any case, a fighter will always land really fast. Aircraft carrier recovery system make the aircraft really heavy, like 20 to 30% more, not worth. Its better just to build a lot of wide highways in your country and use that in a emergency than trying to transform a falcon into a turtle. Electric hidden fans that may use electric power may be alternative, since the aircraft have a electric generator to power the radar and equipament. But again, it will use space.

Roland Protoy: : Bonjour, j'ai vu cet avion lors d'une journée porte ouverte à l'ESALAT de Dax (année : pfuuuu ??? 1968,70… ?). Je crois que c'était le 941 démonstrateur de l'armée de l'air. La piste de Dax est courte et l'avion atterrissait sur à peine la moitié, puis faisait de la marche arrière avec la reverse et redécollait avec une pente de montée impressionnante (idem la pente d'approche ) Longtemps.....longtemps après, dans une autre galaxie, j'ai travaillé avec une personne qui était à l'époque électricien sur le 941à Mt de Marsan; entre autre, l'équipe d'essai faisaient des vols avec posés terrains sommaires sur la piste d'Oloron St Marie. Cette personne me disait: l'avion s'embourbait presque jusqu'aux moyeux et malgré cela on posait et redécollait. Que deviendrait ce concept avec les matériaux modernes, surtout avec les calculateurs actuels, car à l'époque les ordinateurs, c'étaient celui que les ingénieurs avaient entre les deux oreilles assisté de leur règle à calcul et en vol, ceux de l'équipage aux commandes. On m'a dit que les américains avaient racheté l'avion ou le concept ???? Merci pour cette très intéressante video.

les américains l'ont testé (et cassé) mais rien acheté, par contre ils ont largement copié certains détails encore utilisés de nos jours sur le C17 voir un peu le V22 Osprey...

I am sure the Americans would have loved 6 of them ready in 1980 for the Iran hostage crisis. Aujourd'hui, on prend les Ospreys ou hélico avec la portée sans limite (refueling avec les Combat Talons). J'adore les 940 et 941, mais aujourd'hui la DEP sera le favori, soit en hybride, soit électric..

les américains ont largement copié certaines solutions techniques de cet avion pour aboutir au C17 actuel...

Bien possible, par contre, les "blown flaps" étaient bien connu (malgré le génie de Bréguet, il faut un peu plus pour qualifier comme copie; l'axe qui lie les 4 turboprop et ts les volets en même temps sont les paramètres convaincant de l'avion... )
