They’ll complain about Burnes but not talk about how Yelich was basically a no show compared to his mvp seasons. Now he makes a ton and is a wash. Probably was cheating and now gets a ton of cash. That’s who they should be looking at for their struggles. I hope Burnes goes to a team that actually appreciates him.

The fact that he shattered his kneecap the season after his MVP season had absolutely nothing to do with Yellich's decline. He was just cheating. Fun fact, at the time of shattering his kneecap he was the frontrunner to win the MVP back to back. Since shattering his kneecap, he hasn't been close to the player he was.

@@KazeShikamaru Literally the next season was the start of him being bad. Here is the thing, his kneecap "healed" but he clearly hasn't been the same player since. Maybe because he is now physically unable to be the same player he was. He might never return to his pre-injury form. Not because he was cheating but because he can't generate the same power with his legs and can't run as fast to leg out infield singles, doubles and triples. That hurts both his batting average and slugging numbers, which in turn hurts his OPS. Edit: The reduced power will also cause a bunch of balls that would be homeruns to become warning track outs.

For a difference of $750k, I always use the Solomon approach. Split the difference halfway and settle to avoid the arbitration hearing (for the very reasons you see here). Should either side be upset over $375K not to settle? That's less than the minimum wage. That's just good business. The Brewers are a small-market team and I get that they have to control spending but they have to do a better job of salary valuation than to fight over such a small amount.
@Gemnist98

Funny, since Solomon didn’t actually cut the baby in half and instead gave it to the deserving party.
@Battlebum
@Battlebum Жыл бұрын
There is a difference between what each side goes into arbitration with vs what they were negotiating previously. Just for round number examples: Burns might have been asking for say 15 million, while the brewers were only offering 8 million. Once it gets to arbitration, both sides generally move their mark closer to the middle in hopes that the arbitor will side with them. At the end of the day the two sides moved closer to the middle and it was only a 750k difference that the arbitor had to decide between.
@brianeleighton
@brianeleighton Жыл бұрын
You are missing the point. Arbitration hearings are famously contentious. The fact that the Brewers and him were that close, but they still chose to put him through that is the story. Generally, a team will just come up to the player's number or close to it just prior to the hearing if they are that close so as to not damage their relationship with the player going forward. Dellin Betances was supposedly made to cry by what the Yankees said about him during his hearing.
@Neoctix
@Neoctix Жыл бұрын
@@brianeleighton The problem is that those 750 000 could be used as leverage for future or current brewers players in arbitration. I think there was a great video from "Baseball's not dead" that shows the reason why the team has a hard cap on their offer.
@brianeleighton
@brianeleighton Жыл бұрын
@@Neoctix I am sure the Brewers had their reasons. Maybe they thought it wouldn't impact him like it did. Maybe they thought it might but would be worth it in their future arbitration hearings. Maybe they figured it wouldn't have a long term impact on their relationship going forward with him. Clearly, some of those calculations and possibly all of them could be wrong. For instance, he does genuinely seem to have had his feelings hurt badly by the hearing so it appears to have impacted him pretty badly. He also flat out said it changes the way he looks at the organization going forward so it appears to have a pretty bad impact on their long term relationship. My guess is that now the only way the Brewers get an extension done with him is by a significant overpay. He will be a professional through his arbitration years and walk via free agency.

Based upon how arbitration works Burnes was saying his free agency value is about $44 million a year and the Brewers were like, no his free agency value is only $40 million a year. Arbitration happens in years 4,5, and 6 of a players being in the MLB. where as in year 4 it is 1/8 of their free agency value, year 5 is about 1/4 of their free agency value, and year 6 is half their free agency value, but each year is based upon what they made in their previous arbitration agreement, so the more money you made the year before the more you will make this year. If arbitration is mediated, then the player gets either the amount they want, or the amount the team wants, but until the arbitration deadline the player and team can make a deal somewhere in between. Burnes was arguing not just for this years pay, but also next years.
@justinllamas1
@justinllamas1 Жыл бұрын
something tells me that just as much as milwaukee is not interested in winning him in a bidding war for his free agency in 2024/25, corbin burnes himself is committed to reaching the open market as well. the only question I got when milwaukee eventually trades him because they don’t want to lose him for nothing : (1) will they trade him along with a positive asset (adames) in order to increase the prospect haul for him ? OR (2) will they use his trade as an opportunity to offload a negative asset (yelich) and shed payroll ? at the same time, teams can argue … if milwaukee is demanding the moon for him and/or forcing the receiving team to take on yelich’s contract, then why didn’t they think he was worth the extra 750K they fought with him during the arbitration hearing ?

Literally every team does that in a hearing. The Yankees actually made Dellin Betances cry with how mean they were to him. Here is a summary of an arbitration hearing. Both sides walk into a room with the arbitrator at the head of the table. The team sits on one side and you and your agency sits on the other. Your agency then opens up with a PowerPoint presentation pointing out how awesome you are and how you deserve the number you want. At that point, the team stands up for their presentation where they illustrate exactly how much you suck at various aspects of your job with charts and graphics backing up their claims. They might also add you are difficult in the clubhouse or difficult to coach. They do that whole presentation to try to convince the arbitrator of their figure. Even if the player wins the arbitration hearing they often leave with really hurt feelings.

The Brewers' owner has to do this. If you give in to Corbin Burnes' demands, it means more money in arbitration next year and sets a precedent for other players in their organization to possibly command more money. The arbitration system is stupid, but it's also not like the Brewers were going to pay Burnes to stick around after 2024. He's probably not a Brewer this time next year.

Ok fine, don't give an average player that extra $750K but for yoir upper echelon players this never makes sense. Its an investment cost that is easily justifiable especially for a team in a market where its difficult to attract free agents.

The scary thing is that Ashby has better stuff and a higher ceiling than burnes and woodruff... and that hader trade was god-awful. He's been so good for so long and I read the like that month his wife had complications with the birth that he had all those blown saves and bad appearances and I think it was his first kid I just I don't get what the Brewers are doing... Brewers need new ownership asap. Attanasio is a rich enough guy, but their plan of "being competitive every year" as they claimed when Hader was dealt won't work if we can't keep our best players because we're too cheap. It's only be sheer blind luck that the trade tree now has William Contreras on it, and we just have to hope Robert Gasser is the next Burnes. He's put money into Norwich (english soccer for those who dont know) and wants to put more in, so he's obviously seen the financial opportunity there and gives no shits about putting anything into the Brewers. The state of Wisconsin are planning to spend $300m fixing the stadium and extending the lease, but what would the point of that be if the team just becomes a bottom feeder. I get it, there's a budget, I get it, you threw money at Yelich (at the time, nobody cared) and it's been set on fire, and I totally get it when you're on a budget you dont want to spend 20m+ on a closer so you have to try and cash in, but a Cy Young level pitcher that you drafted yourselves? Just pay him. It's just so incredibly stupid to have even gone this far with Burnes. Lowball everybody else, and just pay this guy whatever he wants for 10 years. But no, we'll end up with another Rodgers, another Lamet, another Gasser and another Ruiz from one of the teams that actually pay. It won't be Steve Cohen tho, he'll replace Kershaw in LA, we'll get 5 bums for him. Woop.

Unfortunately, how little MKE values their players and clubhouse was the story all year. If they see a way to save or make money, they will jump at a bargain. The Hader trade destroyed moral, productivity, and almost destroyed Hader in the process. THAT was the biggest reason they didn't make the play-offs. No question. The DFA of Cain didn't help either, yes, his productivity had plummeted, but he was popular, loved, and experienced- he wasn't just A clubhouse guy, he was THE clubhouse guy. When Yellich signed his long contract at the height of his value he truthfully said he could have gotten more money by signing elsewhere, but he loved the Milwaukee system so much and felt so valued, he took the cut to stay there. Just a few short years later, NO ONE would say that now.

which prospect haul do u believe NYM would give up that milwaukee would accept ? and would milwaukee force NYM to accept yelich’s contract and would burnes be willing to do an extension with NYM or would he still be committed to free agency ?
@brandonb9806
@brandonb9806 Жыл бұрын
I think the Brewers should trade him, and should do it ASAP. If Yelich didn't fall off a cliff, I think we are looking at a really nice 2 year window, in which case it would make sense to keep Burnes and increase the WS odds as much as possible. Given that Yelich is eating up alot of money, and the Brewers seem to finally have some young talent on the horizon, I would rather they turn Burnes into more talented players for when Chourio and CO are up.

For those who know about how arbitration works and how teams have hard caps to what they can offer (unless if they want to lose millions each year), nobody should be surprised they didn't move up 750K. Now as for why they didn't agree to a separate deal/extension, that is a bit surprising.
@UniqueUserName123
@UniqueUserName123 Жыл бұрын
You clearly do not understand how to retain talent. If your best player wants $750k more, you find somewhere to make a cut. What this is really saying is “we don’t plan on keeping him around” which is what the fans should be most mad about
@jFudgy_

@@UniqueUserName123 my point proven, you don’t understand how teams do arbitration. If you want a video that would explain everything to you and to why just giving that extra 750K would eventually cost the team tens of millions going forward, I’d be happy to link one. I don’t have enough text room to explain it to you
