In this video, Paul Antonio of @pascribe makes us question EVERYTHING we know and do when it comes to calligraphy.
WHY are you holding the pen the way you do?
WHY is your paper positioned on a certain angle in front of you?
WHY are you sitting the way you are? Are you hunched? Are your legs crossed?
WHY is your line on a 50 degree slant, and not a 55?
WHY are you practicing your strokes, but not correcting them?
WHY are you using a nib, if you can't even produce a proper line with pencil?
And SO MUCH MORE!

Becca - your video interviews with Calligraphers are great. This one with Paul Antonio is very important because most of us either do not realize how badly our body mechanics are while lettering something. I also appreciate how he stresses the importance of knowing what you are doing with each stroke of the pencil or pen and paying attention to how you hold your writing instrument. His Studio is AMAZING - Imagine all the wonderful pens, papers and inks he has there .... I loved seeing it.

In an era where we want everything to be perfect fast, it is great to have people that bring us down to Earth, and help us understand the importance of practicing the right way, to eventually improve and fix our mistakes. Definitely going to pay more attention to the pre-basics! what a great interview!

I think I'm one of the 3 people in the world who didn't know this man before this video, but as I'm just now really diving into calligraphy (much deeper than I had been in the past), I hope I can be forgiven! I'm glad I know who he is now. As a fellow lover of history, I loved his perspective on how we have to adapt the traditional/historical aspects of writing in contemporary settings. I'm looking forward to diving deeper into his work, and getting my pre-basics down before I start learning pointed pen!

Thank u for bringing Paul Antonio... I watch his youtube videos... but in ur video.. he talked about the very basics of straight lines and giving thick strokes on th edges and thin in the middle.. which i have never seen... also, when he told that after completing every group of lines, we need to analyze where did we go wrong n correct them by practicing it again and leaving the incorrect start of line the moment we get to know that we have made a mistake n starting fresh line...a great learning for me today... thank u so much once again...

Wow! I watched Paul Antonio's three videos on Posture, Position, and Placement earlier tonight and I learned that the way I hold my pen contributes to my shaky strokes. After practicing strokes for about 45 minutes while holding my pen properly, I saw a noticeable improvement. Paul is amazing in his grasp of the tiny details that bring success in calligraphy, as well as his ability to explain them in a way that is almost mesmerizing. I'm almost done with week three of Show Me Your Drills and I know that this is going to be a tremendous help. I later realized that you had a video with Paul, so I've just finished watching. I think I'll be looking at your video over and over until all the wonderful information sinks in.

I am late to the game here as this is years old. As a child my mother began teaching me calligraphy but I was too impatient. As an adult I’d like to learn. I’ve been searching KZfaq but find only this brush lettering art that doesn’t interest me. This interview blew me away. Paul is to be revered and I’m in awe. I plan on red watching this interview now again but one thing that blew me away was that if we begin something and we do it wrong, if we continue doing it thinking we’re correcting it is still wrong. If I begin something and do it wrong, stop, begin again right. This part of the interview was so profound to me. So obvious yet so profound. I love this interview and now have you and Paul to follow. Thank you both so much

I watch tons of artists and calligraphers on KZfaq, and I swear I always cringe when I see inproper pencil or pen grips. Penmanship was a huge thing when I was in school, and everything he says here was drilled into us from first grade. These are the same principles I try to instill in my art students. Calligraphy and drawing should be taught concomitantly.

Paul talks a lot about breathing, and controlling your breathing to help achieve better strokes. What are his thoughts on using a metronome?
@PAScribe
@PAScribe 3 жыл бұрын
The metronome is too monotonous our breathing doesn’t work like that because we are not machines. There is a lot of variability in the writing of the letters so too our breathing needs to adjust.

I am fascinated by Paul Antonio, yet I have a hard time actually getting any digestible information from any of his KZfaq presence. He has a lot of statements "I have found..." or "This thing will revolutionize the way you..." which is a manner that makes me question the content. I hope to find a way to get a look through his manual of copperplate some time soon and see if that is comprehensive since it's a done product and not a sneak peak that in and of itself cannot show a holistic view of a subject. I hope, and I'm sure there is, there is actually more to the buzz around this guy than lots of talking about things to change or not do. I'd love a really basic series from him, that comes full circle into a process, rather than a session of inspiration while someone is presumably going through a very thorough study of all the intricacies of some script.

This video was just very good! Loved the editing and the good quotes. So nice with the ring story at the end. Nice to see a bit more of the human side of him, not only the professional trying to put out as much information as possible out there.

I would suggest you get the copperplate course on Teachable. My approach is mine, it is not regurgitated information. I developed it myself and it is innovative and revolutionary. Many who use it say is completely changed their approach. I don’t say that because it comes from me by from my students.
