as a Canadian i can tell you this goal meant so much more than any championship, Stanley cup, or world cup. this was our game, played on our soil, playing for the olympic gold. but its the fact that it was on our soil at the highest level that made it so special. to state just how passionately Canadians felt about this game i can say 2 facts about what happened that day. 1 is the entire country shut down, not joking, even planes in airports were not able to take off because the passengers refused to board so they could watch. and the second being that it was the most watched broadcast in Canadian history, over 16 million televisions were tuned in (not 16million people, 16 million televisions), in a country of only 30 million at the time. there was somthing really magic that happened in our country during the 2010 olympics

Twelve years later and this video brought tears to my eyes. Here in Canada all you have to say is "golden goal" and almost everyone knows what you are referring to. We are hockey. Here we are 50 years after the 72 summit series and every hockey fan knows and can visualize the goal if you say "Henderson scores" and game 3 of the 1987 Canada Cup, " Lemieux to Gretzky back to Lemieux ...SCORES". As much apart of us and our culture as the players themselves.

I think this game also highlighted how far America has come in hockey development. The US lost but damn... there was so much amazing talent on the ice for the American side. 1980 will still be the high mark for American hockey but this game showed the talent gap wasn't that far off.

Me too man. Top 5 moments in Canadian History. I was in Van that day, the sound of the cheer reverberated off the buildings. I swear you could hear the entire city cheering. It was an incredibly unifying moment in Canada, I spent the game at a rooftop party in downtown Vancouver and you could hear the roar across the river when that golden goal went in! Every country in the world was watching. I'm from BC, an hour from Vancouver. Everybody on the highway was pulled over listening on the radio, NO one was on the streets, even the homeless and drug addicts were watching in TV stores. (No joke) I remember as soon as we scored windows were breaking all over town from how loud it was. All of vancouver went nuts, boats blasting their horns, every floor in every building was jam packed. Cars honking wherever you went, people screaming at the top of their lungs, I was sadly young and don't remember TOO much of the game nor the excitement but when I look back at it, everything I listed is what I remember.

To put the magnitude of the game into context, roughly 16.6 million Canadians, or about half of the entire population was watching. I remember going out to get some drinks at a convenience store during intermission, and it felt like a ghost town outside. The dude in the convenience store was watching it on a little box TV on the counter. It's still the most watched TV event in Canadian history. Edit: Also, I looked it up, and all of the top five most viewed TV events in Canadian history were part of the 2010 games. The country just sort of collectively lost our minds over them.

Idk if anyone said it yet, but this was actually the most watched televised broadcast in Canadian history. It's estimated over 16 million people watched the game which was more than half of the countries population. In fact I just looked up the numbers and apparently 6 of the 7 most watched tv events in Canadian history all came from this one Olympics. The other one in the top 7 was the 2002 Olympic gold medal game lol

My Irish Fiancé at the time(he’s now my husband of 13 years) he got a severe crash course in Canadian PASSION for hockey during the 2010 Olympics, we were over visiting. He knew how intense we take our hockey, but he saw first hand the seriousness of it, being with my family! Now I was cooking dinner at the time, missed the actual goal, but hearing the screams from the sitting room which included my Déise future husband, I knew I chose wisely!

Lol "2nd quarter? See I'm a professional!" - there are three "periods" in hockey :P. Also yeah game was massive in Canada. Every knows where they were. Canada won gold against USA in USA in 2002. USA isn't huge with hockey but the fans wanted revenge and they are generally pretty tight with Canada and the other top squads (Russia, Sweden) talent-wise. They had a good team that year. Also no McDavid on this team, the NHL hasn't at the Olympics since he joined the league. Thanks for bringing back the memories of this one. Ryan Kesler's tears are delicious. I was in Vancouver, sitting in a tiny restaurant about 4 blocks from the arena, watching that game on a tv that the owner brought in for the morning. Me and 3 friends had driven 12 hours straight to be in town that weekend for the game. When that goal went in, everyone went absolutely nuts. It took us 3 hours to get through the mob in the streets afterwards. I'll never forget that day

Adam they published some stats that showed that 80 percent of Canadians were watching this game, based off of water usage. They literally tracked how toilet flushing went off the charts between periods, across the whole nation, at the exact same time, and then down to barely anything, and then back up again after the first period, rinse and repeat. You can find it online its super cool.

It was definitely something that transcended sport. The pressure to win GOLD started the second Canada was awarded the 2010 Olympics and steadily built for years right up till that moment. Losing was not an option. Everyone, even those who don't follow hockey, felt it. When the puck went in in OT people could exhale for the first time in years. That's what it felt like.

As a Canadian nothing comes close to the feeling of the Canadian hockey team at any level winning. 30 million Canadians lost the minds when that gold was scored. There are a few major moments in hockey that almost every Canadian can remember, Paul Henderson scoring winner against Russia in the 1972 Summit series, (one of the most amazing hockey series ever), Mario Lemieux from Gretzky in the 1987 Canada Cup vs Russia, and Crosby 2010 Gold medal. There are many others but those are the big ones that Canadians still get goosebumps watching. We love OUR game.
