Fun fact: cats will naturally form colonies with sisters and their offspring, communally sharing their kills and taking care of each other's kits. So, the reason your cat brings back excess kills is that they see you as part of their family-either as a sibling or parent-and want to feed you and take care of you.
@saytammm
@saytammm 5 жыл бұрын
Id like to add that these's also alot of solitary cats that didn't evolve to be social or form colonies (which is the case with I guess alot of housecats). In that case, the reason they bring their dead prey is because the hunting instinct and the feeling of hunger are not tied together (which is why they like to play and stuff, even if most cats are kept well fed). They simply hunted something and bring it home to eat later (or share, like you said)
@spellwing777
@spellwing777 5 жыл бұрын
@@saytammm That's not...no, they DID evolve to be social, but IN CERTAIN CIRCUMSTANCES. Like the aforementioned 'sisters and their offspring'. Basically very close family. Toms roam from one colony to the other, fertilizing the females, and then getting driven off so they don't kill the offspring not related to them (which is why it's recommended to neuter toms to keep them from wandering off) and unrelated females are also driven off as well, because they're not part of the family group and they would compete for food. This is the behavior of the feral felis domesticuss, which while not exactly the same, does share similarities. Also while some cats are sociable than others, that's called personality, and you don't exactly 'evolve' one of those.

This just happened with my car Loki- he’s normally indoor but got out, coming back later with a ‘present’ overnight and when I went downstairs in the morning, I could smell the odor of death...which, in a split second, my non-discriminatory idiot French bulldog scarfed down before I could grab him. He stayed outside the rest of the day.

@@marlonmoncrieffe0728 It's a common enough concept now, but the notion of "extinction" was fairly new in the 1800's, and considered to be heretical by many naturalists. After all, if God saved them on the Ark, they must enjoy some divine protection... Right? Well, it turns out that not only do entire species go extinct, but genus, family, order, class, and phyla go extinct too! Kinda goes against the notion of intelligent design if 98% of every species that has ever been ain't no more.

@@marlonmoncrieffe0728 A bird corpse couldn't exactly be airmailed from a new-zealand island to london and to a certain extent on some islands it's not a simple (or cheap) operation now either. A one way journey to england from a large port in new zealand in 1894 could easily have taken several months; they had telegraphs but the message would have to make it across to stephens island too. Add to that some arrogance, ignorance and/or a little jesus dust and SHAZAM! It's gone...

@@marlonmoncrieffe0728 actually, "Scientists" also cause species to go extinct. Like the "Great Auk" (the penguin of thew north Atlantic) in the 19th century, when it was realised it's number were dropping and heading for extinction, "scientists" rushed to kill specimens so they could have it as part of their "collections". The last of them was said to have been killed by such "scientists".

I live in a very rural area and I have two cats. Voles, shrews, and rats are plentiful in the woods behind my house, they destroyed my neighbour’s garden. Then I moved home and started letting my cats outdoors. Now the garden is thriving. If there was a threatened species in my area, I wouldn’t let my cats out, they’re really good predators. But since their prey is very plentiful locally and not threatened globally, I feel no qualms about it.

And the American mink in the UK and Europe! They have decimated all the wildlife in our waterways since they literally eat everything. From small birds all the way up to adult mute swans. They will even kill fish, frogs and water voles. And they don’t just kill once like most predators, they will often kill one animal as well as any others they find in the area, which can have severe negative effects on the ecosystem. Of course this isn’t the minks fault and they have had a pretty sad history in the UK being used on fur farms

My cat brings me gifts from time to time also. Mostly ground moles and field mice. (I live in farmland in Florida) During the January cold snap, these mice come indoors to nest in the relative warmth and protection my human abode will provide. They also like to forage in my pantry. That's when the cat likes to spend more time indoors with me. He lays in wait in the kitchen and snags the furry little morsels at all hours, sometimes feeding on the fresh kill and other times searching me out to gift me. He thinks I'm a lousy hunter I guess. We used to have a maid service come out weekly to really keep the place scrubbed and clean before us kids got older and started moving out, but Minnesota winters often drove some mice into the basement. Hey Hank, you said cats don't meow at other cats and I was astonished I had never noticed, even told other people this amazing fact, however I have since learned my cats do indeed meow at each other and the strays outside my porch. How can I be a proper crazy cat lady while spewing false information?
@ZombieBarioth
@ZombieBarioth 5 жыл бұрын
Are you sure what you're hearing is a meow and not yowling or some other vocalization? Cause cats really don't meow at each other for the most part, its typically juvenile behavior. Meowing at the cats outside is more likely than not meant to get your attention, much like how a kitten does to get it's mother's attention, not the other cat's.

Lol it's true tho. Sadly, cat lovers are irrational about how problematic a cat is. We have finite resources and meat is very environmentally harmful, having cats that are carnivores escalates this problem. They carry disease as well as mind altering parasites. Try to tell people this and they'll lose their minds telling you it isn't true. Their cats are purrrfect. Now humans also need to consume less meat, corn is super harmful to produce (doesn't help the bees any for sure, drains water tables), we need to include more insect protein as well as more flowering plants in our diet or we're all screwed anyway.... Needless to say a cat is just a resource waste unless you live in mouse infested... or pesky flightless bird infested areas.

There was a large predator in New Zealand called the Haas Eagle but it was huge and mostly consumed Moa an equally huge flightless bird. This has been theorized to be the reason why a lot of bird species are Nocturnal as well as having camouflaged feathers (see Kea, Kaka and Kakapo) even Kereru (or Woodpigeon) flies very close to the ground (which has problems with modern roads).

So why didn’t the Europeans just keep plenty of cats around to kill the rats and thereby reduce the incidence of the plague? They had cats at the time. They were originally brought to Europe by the Romans, who had discovered the felines in Egypt. Keeping pet cats as mousers had become popular in Europe by the time of the first plague. To fully answer that question, you need to understand the belief system of medieval Europe. Based on historical accounts and medieval art, people during this period were prone to many superstitions. The Catholic Church was the most powerful entity in Europe at the time, and the masses were consumed with the presence of evil and eradicating it in any form it might be believed to take. Because of their secretive nature and their ability to survive extraordinary circumstances, the general population came to fear cats as consorts of Satan. The innocent cats began to be killed by the thousands. The cats ultimately got their revenge, of course. Since there were few felines left, the rat populations increased unchecked, and the plague grew even more widespread. You’d think that the humans would make the connection by this point, but instead, they made things even worse. They began to associate the plague’s new vigor with the cats and even with dogs. They believed that since both of these animals typically harbored fleas, they must be the cause of the plague. Subsequently, cats were outlawed in many parts of Europe, and huge numbers of cats and dogs were killed. In fact, at one point in the middle ages, there were barely any cats left in England at all. Even though cat ownership was illegal in some regions, a few people kept their felines. Other people finally noticed that these cat owners often seemed to be immune to the black plague. Word spread quickly, and more observations of this phenomenon were noticed. This resulted in research, crude as it was during the time. Eventually, it was decided that the rats, not the cats, were responsible for spreading the black plague. Then, of course, everyone wanted to own a cat or two. And since cats are prolific breeders, it didn’t take long for the demand to be satisfied. The laws which had been the cats’ death sentence were repealed. In many regions, a new law took its place - one that protected felines instead of banning them and almost causing their extinction in Europe.

Michael Leers TNR simply isn’t suitable in these circumstances, as the video states these wrens where wiped out it only 12 months! Here in Australia we have sucsesfullh eradicated cats from large fenced reserves which have become the final strongholds for a wide variety of species I don’t believe there is a single example of TNR working on such wide scales It is however the perfect solution for urban and semi urban areas where we arnt racing the clock to save a species
@MikeBMW
@MikeBMW 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you, for the response, however if Tibbles were fixed, a limited amount of damage would have been done and the needless suffering of the birds, cats, and the animals might have been mitigated. Wide scale TNR can work, if enough people care to do so.
@WickedWildlife
@WickedWildlife 5 жыл бұрын
Michael Leers the issue is Tibbles was alive in 1890, long before we where able to dears female cats Also here in Australia most cats are in very very remote areas, as in 1 person to many hundreds of square kilometres, I’m yet to hear of any sucsess in these kinds of environments Again I think TNR might have a place where there isn’t a species at direct risk on imminent extinction and where catching 100% of the cats is actually achievable

@@WickedWildlife Exactly, in places where it can be done TNR is a great idea, could help control wild cat populations in urban areas like you said, my city has tons of cats from people that decide a pet is too much work and then they just end up multiplying from there..honestly I feel like if you're not a breeder you should get fined or something if you don't get your pets neutered, especially cats. They're cute and all but they're also a highly invasive predator that kill tons of animals..and while it's not really a problem in most places stories like this show how it really can be in others.

@LeatherNeck1833
@LeatherNeck1833 5 жыл бұрын
Guess you've forgotten about the dozen or so ice ages, super-volcanic eruptions, fires, plagues/swarms, and meteor/comet impacts that sent over 90% of all species to ever live (flora and fauna) into extinction long before humans came on the scene? Not to mention the fact that animals of all sorts seem to have a nack for "trespassing" all on their own (it's how our early ancestors got to the Americas, after all). Rats, reptiles, and of course insects have all ridden natural rafts from island to island and across seas in the aftermath of storms. And if they landed in a place that evolved without them, the food chain got disrupted. So though I understand your point, it's not entirely accurate. While we are destructive, we are hardly at the top of the list; however, we may be the first species ever to directly initiate their own extinction.
