The Westman Islands are a remote group of islands in the southwest of Iceland. On the only inhabited island - Heimaey - in a former boathouse right next to the harbor, Gísli Matt and his family run a restaurant that serves gourmet Icelandic delicacies. It’s a real challenge, and not just because of the climate - but with an average annual temperature of around 5 degrees Celsius, the weather does play a particularly important role. The ingredients thrive on his doorstep: His father catches the fish (19 different types of fish are served at Slippurinn), and unusual ingredients such as the oyster plant or lupine flourish in the lava soil, offering up plenty of flavorful surprises.
