Shi Zhiyong returned to competition at the 2024 IWF World Cup, the last-chance Olympic qualifer, and blew everyone away with the effort and performance he put forward. In what seemed like the closing act of his career, he pushed through pain, injury, and doubt, to put on a spectacular performance.

Best guess would be Shi. With rahmat out and rizki in, Shi's chances of winning is higher compared to Li vs Karlos

Fred I agree with you about Li. In 2021 he was second to Liu Xiajun in the world in the 81s and couldn’t go. This time around he leads the qualifying pack but it’s a much tougher fight. He’ll be 30 in 2028 and hopefully will stick around.

It surely has to be Shi. All he needs is to get slightly healthier and add a couple of kgs to his total and rizki to not be at his absolute best. Li however would need karlos (and potentially a couple of others) to completely collapse or bomb out. I have nothing against rizki but would love to see Shi get a final Olympic gold/golds.

As I understand it it’s lower back pain that’s killing him. I was a split jerker who used power jerks in training but never squat jerks. This is pure speculation on my part but does anyone else wonder if his squat jerks aggravate his back? It seems he bottoms out every lift. To me it seems if you aren’t positioned well in that overhead position you increase chance of injury even if you make the lift. You squat jerkers enlighten me.

You need monstrous upper back strength to even be able to hold the bar and begin to stand up with it with a squat jerk. Having split jerked 110 at 61kg bw, when I attempted to squat jerk my 90 i got pinned at the very bottom with the bar overhead and just couldn’t stand up without feeling like my scapula was gonna explode

that's why not everyone can squat jerk, also it looks much more elegant to look at than a split jerk in my opinion

I'm not an expert at squat jerks by any means but do them regularly in training (admittedly not with the same insane weights Shi does). However I've had loads of lower back problems of late and squat jerks are one thing that doesn't really aggravate it and sometimes even seems to help.

No doubt that the GUY is still a BEAST, and a tough competitor - BUT, when you analyze the PRE-COVID era Shi vs. present day Shi it's crystal clear that his overall strength just isn't the same. His cleans are much more "grind-y" now - and this depletes his ability to squat jerk as much weight consistently as before. Having said that, he should STILL go to Paris (along with Fabin and Dayin) as he COULD still win Gold - if Rizky, Bohzidar and the Latvian guy falter.

they aren't sending Dayin... its Fabin.. GigaChad... and probably Shi if he is fully recovered... even if he isn't.. he still could win.. he's pretty much got the snatch gold on lock...

He had a pretty bad case of patellar or quad tendinitis over the last couple of years it seems. A year or two ago he was almost collapsing after lifts holding his knees so I think he's just beat to shit at this point

Yeah, fake struggling just to be sure to really not qualify for Olympics... He should have faked miss his lifts so he wouldn't have qualified despite secretly having the bars to make gold. What a mastermind he would have been, Sun Zu would have been proud !
