Pee Wee Herman revitalized the song when he did the "Pee-wee Dance" to it in his 1985 film 'Pee-wee's Big Adventure.'

Can't hear this without seeing Pee Wee in my mind on that bar swinging his arms back and forth. Great scene.

I think part of it becoming a big hit is the fun of shouting out a word after every verse.

The national anthem of rock instrumental oldies!

I would say that "Walk Don't Run" by the Ventures was the epitome of instrumental rock...

This song was HUGE in the late '50s, as evidenced by the crowd reaction. And it just never goes away, showing up in a massive number of movies, TV shows, commercials, sports arenas, parties, reunions, picnics, wedding receptions, bar mitzvahs, and on and on. It has entered the realm of legendary all-time classic.

One of my favorite oldies. I also love Santo & Johnny "Sleep Walk". It's an instrumental but it is so beautiful.

They were a Surfer type band, like the Safaris, Dick Dale 🎶😳😬

I remember learning this on guitar when it came out. A few months ago my grandson, who was in twelfth grade (just graduated), told us he and friend sang Tequila at a school talent show. I laughed and went downstairs and grabbed my guitar, came back up and said "OK, sing it for us" and started playing it. He said "It's just one word". I said "I know, I want to hear you sing it if you can remember it!" 😂

My favorite memory of "Tequila" is going to a Golden State Warriors basketball game (1988).

Damn, Harri, haven’t heard the original in years!! Classic

Harri, the perception of music in the 50s has not changed today; if people like a song, it becomes a hit at any time. People then and today differed only in one thing, technological capabilities.

Do not underestimate the power of marketing. If a song does not get any attention, people will not know about it. Still, too many crappy songs become huge hits, mainly just being a fad.

This was one of the great instrumental bands from the 50's-60's. The Champs were an American rock & roll band & most famous for their Latin-tinged instrumental "Tequila". They also did "Limbo Rock" & "El Rancho Rock". The Ventures also had a lot of great instrumental hits such as "Walk, Don't Run", "Telstar", "Lonely Bull", "Hawaii 5-O" theme etc. The group The Surfaris had a big hit with "Wipe Out".

They weren't on the recording of Tequila or on this video but by the time Limbo Rock was recorded the band included future greats Glen Campbell and Seals and Crofts.

My story is of being in a bar on the evening of December 31, 1999, shortly after it turned to 2000. The sound system played "Tequila" and I thought "Yeah, why not? Special occasion." I elbow my way to the packed bar only to find myself competing for the barman's attention with maybe half a dozen others, all wanting tequila. It made me realise why marketing works, hah!

Poor audio but great to see a live version from way back then 😃 Check out Lord Rockingham's XI "Hoots Mon" (1958) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fbuDodyLtra-nIE.html and The Mar-Keys "Last Night" (1961) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/at-Rg6V6zrTaY2w.html Who needs complicated instrumentals??

Great song. Studio version first. I am sure every band wants to put its best foot forward and live versions were anything but that back in early rock and roll. That is unless one doesnt really care about the MUSIC!

Are you comparing the version you know to this awful sounding video? The Champs are the only ones I know doing this song, and OF COURSE the studio version sounds much better (and it’s probably the version you remember).
