Since being elected to office in 2013, Seattle City Councilmember Kshama Sawant and her socialist party have been locked in a bitter battle against the city’s moneyed elites, who have poured hundreds of thousands of dollars into a corporate PAC called “A Better Seattle” and saturated television and digital platforms with negative advertising. Sawant is hated because she is effective. Following a three-year struggle against the richest man in the world-Jeff Bezos-and his political establishment, she and her allies pushed through a tax on big business that increased city revenues by an estimated $210 to 240 million a year.
Her leadership and her party provide an example of effective resistance to the war being waged on the working class and the poor-but, as she explains in this episode of The Chris Hedges Report, every victory has been won in spite of entrenched opposition from Democrats. Instead of depending on the Democratic Party establishment, Sawant says the only way to make advances in the class war is through class struggle and mobilizing ordinary people.
Chris Hedges interviews writers, intellectuals, and dissidents, many banished from the mainstream, in his half-hour show, The Chris Hedges Report. He gives voice to those, from Cornel West and Noam Chomsky to the leaders of groups such as Extinction Rebellion, who are on the front lines of the struggle against militarism, corporate capitalism, white supremacy, the looming ecocide, as well as the battle to wrest back our democracy from the clutches of the ruling global oligarchy.

@@edward9862 Your reply is silly and historically uninformed. We have free education now, up to university. And university was also free here in the past, and is still free elsewhere. Ditto healthcare. The key is: free at the point of use. Yes, we have to pay for it. But we pay for it FAIRLY at the point of taxing, then distribute these social goods likewise fairly. I lived in England for 10 years. I saw with every paycheck how much they took out for the healthcare system, based on my income level. After that, my use and everyone's use of the system was "free." So please educate yourself before pronouncing on these vital matters.

I just completed a one year fight to force my landlord to offer a renewal lease upon the expiration of the old lease. There are 10 low income tenants in a 99 unit building. Our landlord thinks that the only reason for a lease is to impose restrictions and to raise rents. During the pandemic when our low income apartments were under a rent freeze he refused to give us the protection of a one year lease, therefore, the tenants reverted to month-to-month status. In my state month-to-month tenants can be evicted with no reason and with no compensation. So we fought and he tried to respond with a six month lease. Unacceptable to long term low income tenants. We fought on and found several mistakes the landlord included that were prohibited under the inclusionary housing program that governs these apartments. We organized and won the fight on all ten apartments. We got a reduction in rent, we got an annual lease, he had to fix the mistakes and he included a clause that guarantees that we won't have to fight for annual leases hereafter. He also finally made improvements to some apartments that he had been denying or fighting about. Kshama Sawant is absolutely the best legislator at any level in this country. I salute her determination, smarts and her articulate defense of working people. Hooray Kshama!

@@bertanelson8062 This was a corporate landlord who, together with other big landlords contribute heavily to the election campaign of the local legislator for the area. We endangered our tenancy for sure when we fought and won our lease fight. But it had to be done because the landlord was so unfair and lied to us all the time. He hiked our rent, over charged us for services and did everything to make money he wasn't entitled to under the agreements he signed. The county officials didn't want to help either but we made such a racket they finally intervened. Fear is the worst thing we faced. It made me physically ill some times because I knew that without this apartment there was absolutely no other place to live that I could afford. But on the other hand, I was suffering from repeated allergy attacks, asthma, hives and generally ill health from the filthy uncleanable wall-to-wall carpeting. It had been saturated with dirt, actual soil from a huge construction project accross the street. Since I only had two windows in the apartment, one in the bedroom and one in the living room, and I had to keep the windows open for cool air during the construction for two years, everything blew into my apartment when piles of earth from digging out basements stood uncovered for months accross the street. Demolition blew stuff in too and who knows what was in that mess. The old apartments were rat infested and they took refuge in our building too. What a terrible two years, not to mention the noise and constant trucks, even at midnight. We fought the midnight deliveries of construction materials too. So one way or another we had to fight because we couldn't live in the apartment with those dirty wall-to-wall carpets we couldn't clean and the rats too. All this with no lease? It was too much. We wore the officials and the landlord out. We showed we would fight even if we were threatened and bullied. It was finally easier to give in than to have constant hassles with us and all of the other tenants too, even the ones who wouldn't join us. We kept organizing among all of the tenants. We promised we would take this to court and we had proof of all the lies and overcharges. We saved every one of our leases for 16 years with every one of the incorrect and unfair clauses. We had every notice and failure to notify date and instance for 16 years. We had correspondences and records of conversations and written notes for 16 years. We built a case against this landlord so strong that their own corporate lawyers were afraid to go to court to face a judge. Detail. That's how we won. Detail and determination!

I am sympathetic to what you are saying. But, even if a viable third party emerged and got power, they would not have infiltrators? Essentially, the Dem. turnaround could happen to the other party or at least bribes for voting a particular way would not disappear. Crucially, unlimited money in politics would still wreak havoc on another prominent (new) party.
@coolmodelguy6304
@coolmodelguy6304 Жыл бұрын
@@rogerrabbit7778 - I agree with what you are saying about infiltrators. What is needed is way to root them out, destroy their camouflage. I think the unlimited money is part of the solution. Unlimited money equals unlimited "free speech", drowning the Free speech" of those without money. That is hardly the path to "liberty and the pursuit of happiness". The problem is, all of that "unlimited money" was procured through a fraud pulled on the American people, and it shows up in government records. Starting in 1947, financial assets (or as I refer to it, "wealth") started out with a larger pool of value than the economy in size, a 2.88 to 1 ratio. Since then, wealth has grown faster than the economy by an average of 0.645% per year. Does not sound like much, but it pulls all the annual economic gains into this "pool" of wealth, and then extract even more from us citizens and the rest of the world. This system is rigged to keep the ruling class on top, has been from before WW2 started. We need to understand this simple fact, the wealthy steal everything from us. Wealth cannot be generated from outside of the economy, yet it has, by borrowing massively from the future. $13 trillion was how much wealth gained last year, that is 66% of our entire GDP. Real wealth cannot grow faster than the economy, and the total sum of wealth cannot exceed the GDP. Anything else is a fraud economy, anything else will create the suffering we now see around us. Every problem we have as a society is a result of this fraudulent wealth grab. To understand this, people must understand some basic math. You cannot have a gargantuan pool of money that does nothing but grow. That is useless and leads to despotism. We've seen it. We are living it. Get people to understand that, and infiltrators will be easy to identify.

What I find so puzzling, as a child then teen in an abusive environment in the 70s,, my body instinctively KNEW to speak truth to power. I stood up to and spoke TRUTH to an abusive "parent" for years. The worst of it was that "I" was the one those around me criminalized and shamed for doing that. "I" was the one people treated like I was "wrong" and made excuses for the abuser in "power", To THIS DAY people do it! The Working class mentality was/is to Bow to "authority" no matter HOW incompetent or abusive. "power" was always Right and the subordinate was automatically "Wrong". This is WHY this country is where it IS. I didn't need anyone to tell me to defend myself. It's IN our DNA. This country Wants people bashed into submission and easy to control and it happens right in the "home". It's part of US "Regime Change" around the world. I have resisted ALL my life against Illegitimate "authority" due to what I lived as a teen into young adulthood sharpening myself on the TRUTH and being RIGHT that I was Guilted by others to be "wrong". Am I the Only one who dealt with this? I think not. I have resisted for decades because I thought that's how Americans Lived. I was Wrong. I was by myself.

She mentioned that the leadership in Seattle told her that the city ran by their rules. Reminded me of something I read about slick willie after he was elected in '92. Reportedly, a contingent of wall street types, led by Jamie Dimond met with him in the oval office and told him that if he tried to govern on what he ran on, he would fail. So he bent the knee.

The thing that truly terrifies me is that a large proportion of the working class do not have an intellectual understanding or a visceral awareness of just how badly they have been ignored, mistreated and disrespected. It is truly egregious, and it SHOULD be a source of embarrassment and shame for our "deciders" (G.W. Bush terminology) that they have been so unable to manage this nation effectively.
@asbeautifulasasunset
@asbeautifulasasunset Жыл бұрын
The deciders have no shame. They are doing exactly what they want to do - extract profit from Americans through taxes and business interests while screaming about freedom and how bad regulation/government is for everyone (really their business profits). Mitch McConnell is not ashamed of his actions. They are all preconceived, planned and very deliberate. People who cannot penetrate their lies are caught like fish with their bait in their mouth and their pockets are drained. Foreign policy is another means to destroy while special interests profit.

I find the following more appropriate for the topic at hand: "I am convinced that if we are to get on the right side of the world revolution, we as a nation must undergo a radical revolution of values. We must rapidly begin the shift from a "thing-oriented" society to a "person- oriented" society. When machines and computers, profit motives and property rights are considered more important than people, the giant triplets of racism, materialism, and militarism are incapable of being conquered."

Minimum wage fight has become worthless with non-stop rising prices and inflation, which people weren’t responsible for, but rather stupid elite-led politicians, staged pandemics restrictions, hostile relations with countries like China upon which we depend on for household items, and unnecessary wars. As for restructuring laws between tenants and landlords, it would be more effective just to penalize landlords for every eviction made against poor people through tax penalties, and appropriating funds and alternative housing for the poor. Homelessness has become a threatening problem in the US and the city zoning regulations are so harsh against RV living and other public park sleeping. Of course, if there are not enough housing units for the homeless, the least the city could do is to leave the homeless or the poor alone. There is so much to be done and anything is better than nothing. Yet, we must understand that any minimum economic reform is way below the the decent living standards, not because we don’t have the resources, but rather because special interest continues to have preference over public welfare even among the working class, which is toxic. Even the victims of this inhumane system happen to resist change. Very troubling.

Yes, the root problem is consciousness--I am separate from you, therefore I will get what I need, regardless of you--. Until we have a fundamental shift in that view, we will continue to repeat this situation.
@dalisabe62
@dalisabe62 Жыл бұрын
@@bertanelson8062 indeed. If we address the problem from an ethical or moral perspective, things will be completely different, because social injustice is a moral mandate and seldom you find someone to disagree, but when it comes to greed and private property and wealth amassing, somehow all that becomes functional and good to have because according to some economists like Melton Friedman greed and social injustice drive the “free market.” In other words, it allows for slave labor out of desperation to make a living and the difference would be net profit pocketed by the owners!
