You have found something that I have been trying to explain to amp makers for a very long time: 15" speakers are amazing for guitar!! The amount of air that they move is spectacular to the point of almost being theatrical. More, the speakers themselves are more than capable of handling the frequency of a regular guitar extremely well. Why no one that I've seen is currently making 15" cabinets for guitar is beyond me. Also, you mentioned how it is you are able to feel the notes. YES!! Quick story: the first time I ever saw the Eagles was in 1977. They had Community Sound cabinets flown from the roof of the venue and there was a bank of them pointed right at my chest. They opened with 'Hotel California' and every single note coming from Don Felder's 12-string neck punched me in the sternum. It was the most miraculous experience of sound I've ever encountered...!

@@muthapluckinnathan > how do 15" speakers sound when at low volumes. probably not very good. Studies show that speakers' tone does not change no matter how loud or quiet they're run, UNTIL they're pushed to the point their excursion is maxxed out. The same is true for transistor amps. In contrast, of course power tubes sound utterly different depending on the gain. (To test this, put a mic on a speaker with a transistor amp, record it at 0.1 watt and 1w, 10w, 100w, and you can subtract the signals in your DAW and there's nothing left, because the recording is exactly the same. Try again with tubes and its quite different.)

Just discovered your channel. Dude, much respect. I went down the road of wanting to be a professional musician exclusively too. I'd have massively regretted not trying. It didn't work out in my teens and early twenties. Had to work different full time jobs. Never time to write or record. All changed when i was 26, joined a highly paid and constantly busy wedding band. Its an incredible feeling to earn money from your passion. I have plenty of time to write and record my own tunes also. Shoutout to all the musicians trying to make it, or just play music. Stay hungry and stay passionate.

Back in the 80s I was in a surf/ garage band and I was playing through a Fender Twin Reverb 2 head {Rivera designed 105 w, with channel switching} into one of the big Bandmaster cabs with 2 JBL K120s. I could crank clean channel so loud and stay relatively clean , that soundmen were always telling me to turn down ! The other guitar player in my band had a 400w Boogie bass head and a 4x12 Ampeg cab and my Fender could keep up no matter how loud he turned that boat anchor up. Never needed a distortion or O.D. pedal with that amp, the lead channel had great tube distortion at any volume. But for clean and loud, easily as good as this (great sounding) Dual Showman, and fantastic reverb as well.

In one band that I was in our Hammond B3 player ran his B3 through a Leslie tone cabinet and/or a Dual Showman. Usually I played through a Twin Reverb, or a Marshall stack, or a Sound 40w combo with a 15" JBL DR-103. I still have the Sound amp. Most of the time now I play through a 1965 Blackface BandMaster with Eminence Legend speakers in the cabinet. A 1965 BandMaster is like half of a Dual Showman and some guys convert them to Dual Showman specs. The only thing that I've done to mine is tired component replaced and the speaker replacement.

Yeh, that's sweet! I am blessed to have a '67 Showman head, with a single twelve Showman cab loaded with an orange frame JBL in a tone ring; and a 2X12 blonde Tonemaster cab, loaded with orange frame JBL's; AND a 1963 reverb tank. Sounds pretty good, but I also need to take it to the doctor for upgrades, like new 6L6's, rather than the 5881's that just won't handle the plate voltage this beast puts out! Those JBL 15's are amazing guitar speakers, only rivaled by the original Celestion BlueBells, (totally different usages, of course).

100% agree on the amp sim thing. They are getting really good at replicating the sound, but they can never replace the *FEEL* of a tube amp. A kind of feeling that can't quite be put into words or understood without just experiencing it for yourself. Nothing beats the pure guitar feeling of plugging straight in and being in a good sounding room with the amp as loud as you want it.

"human's hear with they're eyes" - glenn fricker on a tone aspect.... nah if you compare the waveforms are a b test it there is no difference with something like a neural dsp. on the cool factor..... absolutely, the tube amplifier is cool tech from the past and its what we base our tones off of most of the time. having something physically is cool to touch the instrument and adjust it.

A modelling amp is like taking a pic of a beautiful scenery and showing everyone how identical it looks to the real scenery . A tube amp is like being there in the midst of the real scenery. People can argue that the pic looks identical to the real scenery. Only someone who is in the real scenery knows that the pic cannot capture the feel of the being in the midst of the real scenery....but someone who hasnt experienced the real thing will never know.

It's like drum machines. Absolutely, those things can nail beats with quartz-watch precision, which is technically correct. And hit with the same force every time. Similarly, an amp sim is some theoretically perfect amp (and cab, and room). But it ain't the same. Rock is slop - glorious, glorious slop.

The only thing that's "missing" from modelers IS the volume. That is up to the individual and their situation. Technology has blessed us with cranked tones at near-whisper volumes. Tones that are identical to the EQ of real amp/cabinet combo of your choice. However, nothing can substitute for volume. Especially in the "feel" department, and even more so when it applies to feedback.

My father bought the very same rig for me back in the early 70's......I had never seen anything like it....my first amp was a Gibson Skylark combo, and the Dual Showman rig was quite a "upgrade"!!! Sooooo LOUD and clean....but I wanted a "rock" sound....as in overdrive/distortion.....and with the Showman, all I could get was CLEAN & LOUD! Back in the early 70's, there wasn't a lot of pedals like there is now.....I ended up with a Big Muff.....with the amp, I'm sure it was a great "pedal platform".....but the 2x15 JBL's did not sound good with the Muff....but it was what I had, so I rocked on! With the Chuck Berry thing, a lot of it was to get a little extra money out of promoters. I know quite a few cats that used to play with him and if the venues didn't have the DSRs, they would be fined. He did totally like the amps and always used them in Stl because they just kept a set at the venue he had his residency, but he would usually use whatever you had. SIR in NY had a pair in house just for when Chuck would tour the East Coast because every venue along the way rented them for him. That's the tip of the iceberg for Berry stories, though.

I'd read a long time ago that Clapton played Dual Showman's at the "In Concert" album (later released as an alternate version titled "Live at The Fillmore", different night) but the best pics I've seen show a pair of Sunn Coliseums into a Marshall slant cab. He did use Showman's during the D&D era, though. And Dick Dale claimed to have co-invented them with Leo.

You should really get an LP or something with humbuckers in it for some of these demos as well. Don't get me wrong, the strats always sound killer, but I'd love to hear how humbuckers get that amp (or don't) to break up more than a single coil can. Old Gibsons through old Fenders are a magical recipe as well.

Always remember, Fender meant for the guitar to be played/recorded in a large, loud mix/band, rather than solo in more of a "Jazzy" Les Paul sort of setting. When you hear them in context, the "ice pickynes" becomes a benefit that cuts through the mix, in a good way.

Disclaimer: Headphones on KZfaq...thing sounds awesome! It’s harmonically rich, and kills it with pedals. Cheaper option than a Two Rock? When I first started playing guitar, I loved playing my bass players Traynor 30 watt tube bass amp combo. 1 x 15 in a closed back cabinet. That thing was awesome for guitar! Old Pro’s, and other guitar amps with a 15 sound great. Speakers and speaker cabinets make a huge difference with tone.

Welcome to your new home Matt! Hope it is all you hoped it would be and even more! Now, about your sound: yes, that is the cleanest Fender Amp/Cab combination I think I've ever heard. However: unless you have a couple of "hulks" for roadies to haul it around; you won't make it past your second gig without the services of an awesome chiropractor!!! I'm a Strat / Twin-Reverb guy myself; but the twin still isn't the lightest amp around either, but it beats the heck out of hauling around that Dual-Showman / Bassman 2x15 combo every other week! - Naw man, I'm just yanking your chain! - Although after watching as many of your vids as I have, my bet is you might keep the head and pair it up with a 4x12; but that 2x15 behemoth would be a monster behind your bass-player (and you won't have to worry about hauling it around anymore)!!! (Plus, on the positive side, you could always set up a deal with him to let you record through it whenever the situation comes up!) Ok; concisely, you're right, it's perhaps the best Fender AMP sound I've ever heard, but you gotta' admit, Stevie Ray, the "First Wife" SRV Strat, and that Vibroverb amp launched the sound that is still out there somewhere orbiting Saturn or somewhere! (You play amazing for a guy your age, and you've definitely got Stevie's chops, I just can't wait to see what you'll be pulling out of those fingers in another 3 - 5 years! - You keep it up, and you'll OWN the Texas Blues scene!) So... Here's to thick calluses and a set of "just right" broken-in strings! God bless you, Matt, and NEVER QUIT ROCKIN! - Just go for it!!! Footnote: I'm 58 y.o. and still jam almost everyday! (Or at least as often as possible!) 🎶😎

Thanks Michael. I think you're right. This one will be reserved for recording and maybe I will get a smaller cab so I could use the head live. SRV did get an incredible tone from a 15 and a vibroverb but I think Cesar Diaz did modify them with bigger transformers.

@@MatthewScottmusic Cesar Diaz... Now there's a name I haven't heard in a long time now., early 2000s if memory serves... Wouldn't you love to be able somehow bring him back for a month or so, hand him an awesome set of tools, and have him "do it to it"! - What would also kick-ass would be able to grab a lesson or two from him! What an amazing technician / musician. (Thanks for bringing his memory back to mind; makes me want to go spin "Johnny Nash - I Can See Clearly Now", or maybe "Frijid Pink - House of the Rising Sun"). See; told you I was an old geezer! ... Still, if I ever have the funds and the right circumstances, (Circumstances - good song by Rush.)! - I would still love to get my hands on a Diaz '64 Vibroverb Custom, a late 60s / early 70s Strat, and jam until I puked... Then, that I would be sufficiently warmed-up, I could get down to some SERIOUS jamming! Here's to sold out gigs and concerts, and beautiful groupies my brother! God bless again. 😊

He's pretty much nailing THE Strat tone. It's like the holotype. That clear, mids-forward chime ringing out like a bell on the clean. That nasally honk when you push it a little more and start breaking up the amp. Then, when hit it really nard, the notes pour out of the amp like liquid silk. I know, I know, the iconic Strat tone is the Hendrix-tastic Strat into a Marshall, but I really think this is the amp that was made for the Strat. 6L6 valves, smooth and clean.

As you may know, SRV started out playing the Fender Vibroverb with a 15” speaker. He preferred a 15” speaker. It’s tone is close to this Dual Showman reverb. The main difference is that the DS Reverb has two 15” speakers in a closed back cab, which gives more bass tones.

For awhile I had a Fender Tone Master with both 4x12 and 2x12 cabinets. It had a similar clean tone to your DS. I bought an external Fender Reverb unit for it. I sold it to Dave Grohl. As a young man in the early 1970’s I had a black face DS. It had great tone but was to large to carry, and too loud for bar gigs. A Fender Twin was more manageable.
