It's the closest thing we'll get to seeing an 'old school" Drum Corps in HD. Classic. Timeless. Marines.

For those concerned about the "quality" of performance vs. DCI, you should know this routine was probably first introduced to this corps a couple weeks (if that) prior to this performance. They are so busy traveling from one gig to another, giving so many different types of performances, they did not have the entire summer to establish a DCI type performance. Also you should keep in mind the number of musicians is considerably less than traditional DCI, yet their sound is incredibly balanced and pure and rivals many of the sounds coming from corps 2 or 3 times their size. Every Marine is first and foremost a rifleman. While it is great we still have an active corps in our armed services, understand these musicians are indeed Marines. They have been trained and continue to train to defend our country. DCI is incredible to watch and enjoy, and the discipline from these young men and women needed to put on these amazing shows is truly awesome. Just don't underestimate what the Commandant's Own and our other Marine Corps Bands do for us, and our country, or the talent needed to be a member of these elite bands or Corps.

The drill show was put on the field back in February, but after that, dedicated rehearsal time is pretty rare due to numerous other commitments. Getting just an hour or so per week is common, and that's often used to shore up key points. Scheduling gets adjusted prior to high-visibility performances like this one.

Plus, they're using G bugles not Bb band instruments. More power due to both balance and these horns. I'm not talking about the quality of the manufacturing of the instruments. I don't know the science behind it, but there was a serious drop-off in sound when they went to Bb instruments. Maybe it's because they don't want to blow out their microphones. LOL

I'm alumni of the Boston crusaders drum corps of 1979, we fielded a horn line of 25 people and when everyone is playing and in tune together the sound can compete with the sound of corps can match the same sound of a corps twice it's with ten or so players marching without playing. The sound is also as clean as any I've heard including our horn line that year

I'm a "squid", but I can't help but admire the precision that only "jarheads" are capable of. G horns are so much better than the band instruments that are taking over the activity ( no amplification necessary). A while back I questioned whether these Marines were "bandos" recruited solely from DCI corps' to be in this unit and were not battle trained. Boy, was I set straight! Check out the medals on some of these guys/BAMs. They are fully trained Marines who have to re-qualify periodically and are capable of putting down their instruments and picking up a weapon, ready to serve wherever needed. I've heard arguments trying to justify inclusion of trombones and other instruments as being "what they're used to." How many of this unit had ever played a two-valve G bugle before? Adapt! Just as many of us went from a G-bugle to one with a valve. Then, a rotary valve or a slide was added. A second valve? Crazy! Then there were three. But, they were still bugles.

In the early 70's I played 3 years with the Yankee Rebels. We had 4 members of the Marine Drum Corp that would come over to Baltimore when time allowed to attend our practices. These guys were exceedingly friendly, and man could they play a bugle. Due to 3 mellophone players moving away, I volunteered to switch over from 1st Sop to the Mellophone. I was managing, doing well enough to fill the empty void, but I just wasn't satisfied with my playing. One of the Marines named Tony could play the shine off of one and started giving me help. (Most of it was crappy breathing tech. for this horn) I lived just outside of DC at that time. Tony gave up many of his free nights and occasional weekend day and came over to my house and worked with me. I never got as good as Tony, but was able to make that horn sing in about a month. The Corp was happy and I'll never forget Tony's kindness. He was a credit to the Marines and what they stand for sure.

I agree. I used to love the corps back in high school but hadn't followed them for a couple years. I recently checked them out and was so disappointed in what they've become over the last 15 years. They're all spandex and sequine laden drag shows with performers rolling on the ground and poll dancing around the guard flags. Even the cadets dropped their traditional uniforms and turned into a marching drag show...

Are you an idiot? over 3/4ths of the Marine Drum and Bugle Corp are former DCI Members so DCI is what MADE THEM. Show some respect.

orichic51 well no shit, you're not gonna have some guys with no good Marching experience perform in a DCI show for the marines

mmMMmm. bugles! though, I was kinda hoping a soprano bugler would whip out the piccolo solo, LIKE A BOSS, right from center field. and of course, it would be crispy and clean, from a Marine!!!

My Dad is a retired Marine, I myself work for MCCS now, ive seen these guys live a couple times at 8th and I and once in 29palms... Amazing!! 1 thing that was never explained to me though, Im glad they get to wear their medals and ribbons they've earned but how come nobody wears their rank on the sleeve like The MGysgt does

The best answer I know is that both the Presidents Own and Commandants Own (these guys) have both regular Marine Dress Blues and the dress reds like these for performance purpose. The Blues have their ranks but the reds are unit specific and I believe don't have the rank for uniformity purposes. The Drum Major is made to stick out and is the senior enlisted member of the unit by billet anyway. On a side note the rank the DM is wearing is the mess dress chevrons and they only make those for SSgt and above. The Presidents Own Band are the same. No rank on the red uniforms of the band members but the DM, ADM, and officers wear rank. Again, the only explanation for this that I know of is old tradition and uniformity purposes.

So clean, so crisp, smooth, and I wish DCI would take notes because all those extra props do nothing but take away from the visual…maybe it’s because I’m 51 but wow it’s nice to see this without all that extra crap…color guard yes, rolling props no thanks…pretty brass without all the screams!!! So pretty and well done!! 🎉🎉

@BrandonPryorMusic you can get medals professionally mounted so the whole medal would not move, it would be like putting cardboard on the back of it but not actually doing that
