"Nightshift" is a song by the American R&B/funk band The Commodores. Released in 1985, it was the group's first single recorded without Lionel Richie, who had left the band for a solo career. Instead, lead vocals were handled by Walter Orange and J.D. Nicholas.
The song was written as a tribute to two influential musicians who had recently passed away: Marvin Gaye and Jackie Wilson. The lyrics express admiration and respect for these artists and their contributions to music. The chorus of the song includes the line "Marvin, he was a friend of mine, and he could sing a song, his heart in every line," paying homage to Marvin Gaye.
"Nightshift" was a commercial success, reaching number three on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the United States and topping the R&B chart. It also performed well internationally, reaching the top ten in several countries.
The song's smooth groove, catchy melody, and heartfelt lyrics have made it a classic of the 1980s R&B genre. It remains a popular choice for radio play and is often included in compilations of 80s music.

Tone of the video is a celebration of Marvin and Jackie, not to be somber.

Oh, I have a special relationship with this song. I was still a child, couldn't sleep at night and turned on my radio. It was an old, big tube radio with such a beautiful dial light. It exuded something calm, soothing for me. And then this song came on the radio... A wonderful song for me to this day.

I came back to this song / video after Prince passed. I revisit it pretty regularly. It's beautiful, upbeat and a bit melancholy. That bass line and the repeated drops into minor key gives it the gravitas that's warranted. We're all going to be on the nightshift in due course. I'm glad you guys reacted to it - love your channel.

I always have connected this song with Tupac's "Thugz Mansion" where he wraps about seeing a Marvin Gaye show while drinking with Jackie Wilson and Sam Cooke then "some lady named Billie Holiday sang" "Just think of all the people that you knew in the past They passed on, they in Heaven, found peace that last Picture a place that they exist together" That's why the Commodores were smiling in this video.

This song came out in 1985. Marvin Gaye and Jackie Wilson both died a year earlier in 1984. This was a very timely song. This was their musical eulogy (a celebration of their lives).

Their first hit without Lionel, and their last. Beautiful composition, heartfelt lyrics, but not sappy in any way. That's tricky to achieve in tribute songs, but they nailed it. (for sappy, check out Righteous Bros.- "Rock and Roll Heaven", ugh) Bruce Springsteen did a tasteful cover of this on his last album Only The Strong Survive.
