We are learning about the features of innate immunity, and one that is often overlooked is the complement system. This is a very complicated ensemble of proteins circulating in the bloodstream that activate each other in a specific sequence that results in immune system engagement to kill pathogens. It's quite involved with multiple possible pathways, so this will take a while, but let's dig into this important system now!

This is the best video on complement I have seen. I'm not an immunologist or even a student. Just a librarian who is fascinated by the immune system. Thanks!

@@fidelkipkoech5555 I've always said, I'll stop learning maybe, just maybe three days after I'm dead. ;) No reason to not study various things, as knowledge is power. Back when I was in the Army (retired in 2010), I ran into not one, but two cases of pheochromocytoma. One was recognized late, the soldier was to begin treatment after field training, but expired from a ruptured AAA. The other, I pieced together what was going on, asked doctor to do me a favor and run a couple extra tests and there it was, he had pheochromocytoma. His problem was quickly addressed and he returned to duty. So, that trivia can and does save lives. Diagnosing things, just Boolean flow really. I do Boolean algebra and regular expressions in my head as part of my job. :) Annoyingly, basic math tends to give me trouble, but that's what calculators or if I had to, fall back to a slide rule is for.

I look forward to more from you, as you definitely posess great talent. P.S.: on page 18 there is a helium atom representation with the subtext implying that it is in colour, when in fact at least my edition is grayscale. Just a (hopefully) helpful note.

I'm so glad that you're making these lectures. I considered months ago that the US population (from high school and up) needs to learn how the immune system works. If we know how the immune system works then we will all understand and agree on something like a vaccine. Thank you for spreading this information.
@spvillano
@spvillano 2 жыл бұрын
Indeed, the problems with COVID seems to be that leukocytes are being infected, interfering with their response, while innate responses are also being blunted. By the time the immune system notices that the infection was unaddressed, it went into scorched earth mode (to oversimplify it by a lot) and that's the cytokine storm of COVID-19 and the Spanish Flu.

Hey, really like your videos, especially the ones where you debunk conspiracy theories. I recently saw something about Tesla's radiance energy curcuit. It is suggestet that this would be able to supply everybody with free energy but companies dont want us to know about it because we should pay for their energy. Maybe that could be a video idea. Keep on the great work!

Professor dave I learned a lot from this video, but I have just one question. I know that there are a variety of proteins that regulate the complement system. Some of these proteins like C1 inhibitors displace and inactivate many proteins. however, Do any bacteria produce these proteins as a defense mechanism
