The young woman at the end of episode 1 said the "carnival atmosphere" of the crowd, after confronting Weinstein, was eerie. If she spent some time observing chimpanzee groups in the wild and how they behave after prevailing in a confrontation, she'd know that it's not strange but typical. Everything on display here is basic evo-psych group dynamics. Weinstein, as a professor in the field, should have realized that all the reasoning in the world, all the appeals to sanity and rational dialectic, were for nothing. The mob had crossed a boundary and entered a mode of pure, tribalistic emotion where reason does not exist. Every attempt he made to reach them--in fact, every time he *almost* had some of them considering reconsidering--they would start chanting "hey hey ho ho" as a method of bringing those people back into compliance with the group. The group *cannot* permit the possibility that Weinstein is NOT a racist, can't afford for him to be anything but a righteous target--they're high on their collective power and if the way they are using that collective power is at all justified, the entire thing depends on him being a bad person. If they entertain the notion that he's not a racist, they must consider the possibility that their behavior is NOT justified, and then they are forced to confront the possibility that they are engaging in bullying, abuse and inexcusable levels of aggression and intimidation against an innocent person. The majority of the people forming the mob desperately want to see themselves as against the very behavior and attitudes they themselves are engaging in. Once they crossed the boundary from a heated disagreement (acceptable) to the smearing and physical intimidation of dissenters or neutral parties (unacceptable), they were committed NOT necessarily to their tactics, but to believing their tactics are justified. The physical and verbal escalation of that very behavior, particularly when Weinstein was beginning to get through to some of them, was done in the service of preserving that illusion of justification. It's all in the service of avoiding having to ask themselves, "Hans???... Are we the baddies?"

@@wolflinkin I think it's racism born of insecurity. Guesswork...but I wouldn't be surprised if most of the black students at Evergreen weren't accepted anywhere else. Probably from inner city schools, with all the baggage that means. Then finding their lack of education makes attending even Evergreen hard. (Not saying you can't get a wonderful education there, but it seems to be possible to kinda slouch through their system and end up with a pretty worthless piece of paper.) Must be extremely frustrating and I can see how young people, no proper adult guidance in sight either, go off track. We need to give poor people a chance to get out of their situation. People who are finanially well off don't start riots. That being said, I think just throwing money at inner cities isn't doing any good; just fattening the corrupt. Personally, I'm glad I wasn't there. I'm an asshole and can be quite the troll when riled. My empathy is only from a safe distance.

The idea of white students protecting people of color comes from the concept of "allyship" (i.e. subordination). They believe that a black student having to advocate on their own behalf is unfair because all of the black student's resources are already being consumed by their collective delusion that they live in a racist society. Thus, the white student allies are obligated to be the enforcers who attack on command or in response to any of the countless words and phrases that identify an individual as a racist.

As a guy who grew up in the Mississippi Delta (I lead off with this on many videos. Sorry if this sounds familiar.), I saw the products of countless years of true, bonafide oppression. And it was grotesque. But these kids are going in the wrong direction, and in a big way. It feels far less about equality and far more about an attempt to steal power. For, if power is how one sees all dynamics, then it becomes less about being on equal ground and more about claiming power over others. They are going the way some of my white ancestors did so very many generations ago. Ironic and totally not helping.

It should have never come even close to that far. These students were so desperately in need of discipline. They have no idea what they are doing. They don't have the maturity to know anything. They are just unruly children. The scenes we are seeing must have been the result of bad judgement by staff and administration going back a long ways. These children should never have been allowed to evolve into the monsters they became. Staff and administration failed them by not setting limits and rules and enforcing discipline.

*sighs* Right now, I'm holding in my hands a book titled "The Case Against Free Speech" by P.E. Moskowitz. In a nutshell, it's an argument in favor of redefining the limits of free speech, given that it is (allegedly) a tool used by the Right to "push their agenda" and (verbatim on the inside front flap) "free speech is impossible in an unequal society where a few corporations and the ultra-wealthy bankroll political movements, millions of voters are disenfranchised, and our government routinely silences critics of racism and capitalism." Inside the book is a chapter on Evergreen. It's not very long and it glosses over much, but it starts by framing Evergreen against a backdrop of white supremacy incidents in Washington (Identity Evropa pamphlets, the Patriot Prayer rally). Comments from Naima Lowe are sprinkled throughout the chapter, as well as some anonymous students, but none from Weinstein, Stacy Brown, or others actually targeted by the protesters. It also pins blame on Weinstein for appearing on Tucker Carlson, thereby empowering conservative and far-right commentators to inflate the incident. It ends by implying that more harm was done to Evergreen, Naima and the student protesters than to Bret et al. He walked away with $500,000 after all, right? I only bring this up, Benjamin, because if it wasn't for your efforts, how many of us would know the true complexity of this incident and some of the frankly frightening behaviors/beliefs exhibited by these folks who truly believe that this so-called equity ideology is the only way to end racism. If you didn't hold the flaming receipts, the assertions of folks like Moskowitz (Evergreen is just another example of white right-wingers exercising their privileged power) would be harder to refute. It's hard enough now, when genuine incidents of white supremacy/hate crimes get rolled together with alleged incidents of racism like Evergreen and Oberlin. The thing I personally find most disturbing about Lowe & co. and the author of this book is that they never seem to question the need for violence and fear in order to bring about their desired changes. They seem to be very comfortable with the prospect. And we can't let people so enamored with their perceptions of injustice and how to solve it get away without taking a good long look into the darker recesses of their minds and the ugly outcomes of their actions. If they're so convinced that they are "on the right side of history," why do the tactics used and the warped thinking remind me so much of all those movements in history that have landed their proponents squarely in the wrong side?
@annyceday
@annyceday 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the clarity of your thoughts. Often we are left with a reply of one sentence without the substance of any examination. As tough as this is to watch at Evergreen it is very hard to dismiss the global assumption that this polarization is and has not been happening since time began. There is and always will be a hierarchy in societies and silencing of dissent, hence the darkness of peoples minds and not looking in the mirror. Seeing the outcome of actions being justified is the way a bully understands that they are not doing anything wrong even in hindsight. The abused become the abusers in this instance.

I've been dying to read that. As a leftist (who went to Evergreen a decade ago) I knew of this brand of student activism and, uhhh, found it wanting. Its really exploded into race/identity/privilege essentialism since then. The right-wing comments on these videos are a good example of how damaging it is to the credibility and efficacy of egalitarian democratic politics. I don't even know if I'd describe this as left-wing. Its a Fox News fever dream. This isn't violence like they would say, its harrassment and intimidation. And its is SO individualized (perhaps betraying its neoliberal underbelly??). Its focused on this one fucking professor! seemingly not focused on institutional demands even though the term "structural" is thrown about willy-nilly. Not tactical. Not strategic. wtf

How this incident grew from these first few videos to eventually being on the national stage is mind blowing. 30 years ago, hell even 15 years ago, nobody would have lost any sleep over this and the adults would have calmed the children down. TL;DR: A former student of Brett Weinstein decompresses pent up feelings about the trauma of the protests. Thanks for posting these, Benjamin. I'm a former student of Brett and his wife, Heather. I traveled with them through Ecuador, and having left their tutelage, I now consider them as something resembling dear friends. At the time that the protests broke out, I was a junior at Evergreen. It was really hard to watch the campus devolve into madness at that time. It's still hard to watch. I feel my stomach twisting into knots and I remember the fear and isolation I felt when all of this was happening. I keep coming back to your videos, despite the pain they cause me, because I think it's important that people are able to see what happened there, and I want to be sure that the story is correctly told. You've done a really good job documenting and compiling the story of the Evergreen protests. You've done a great job. As a personal note, looking back on the events: Before the meeting in the fourth floor of the library, the day after the initial protest, the "meeting" for which Brett was in attendance (I was as well, but my part in the events was small and insignificant), I urged my classmates to go into the "meeting" with gentleness and compassion, and with the mission of understanding, not judging. Apparently, my words were too harsh for a large portion of my classmates, as several of them stopped speaking to me after that. Still, I urge the same now. These students were young and stupid, as was I. I still am. There are some forms of stupidity for which experience is the only cure. Hopefully, some of those students will see the harm they caused, and learn to be a little less reactive, less volatile. To the audience of this and similar stories: Remember that all of this trouble started because a group of people decided that they knew the character of Brett Weinstein without ever having spoken to him. Think on that before you decide you know the students who fell victim to group-think. They were young. They still are. They have a lot of time left to learn.

@@detrean I do understand that theirs is a dangerous philosophy. I also understand that violence and hate does not eradicate widespread belief. When I say that they are children and that they have time to learn, I mean that in those videos, they were acting on emotion, and none of us have any idea how many of them regretted their actions the next morning, or week, or year. Just as Brett was trying to propose, dialectic is our best means of effective communication with those whose ideas and opinions do not correlate with our own, and one cannot enter into a dialectic with a caricature (sticking with the language used in the videos). In the comments, people accuse the students of being idiots and having never had a thought before. Those types of comments serve only to dehumanize the students, which proves their point, at least in their eyes. If we are ever to course correct, we cannot approach the issue as aggressors.
