Hence men dismiss romance novels as crap. Also, men get tired of having to live up to the image of being strong all the time. It's really exhausting. So a common male fantasy is of a woman who is not only physically sexy, but also gives a man the space to be weak (or to relax) when he needs to be... something like a mother figure.

The 'explosive chemistry', the destiny thing, and the 'something about you' are all part of initial attraction and not part of a lasting bond. It's very rare for the sexual excitement to last in any marriage or long-term relationship. I've read some female romances and this is the take away I got. The man has to kind of be perfect. He has to look great, have status and be desired by everyone. It also helps if he has a bad boy persona. He is super competent, but you never really see that in scene. I think its just assumed by his status. What you see in scene is that he comes off as extreme incompetent and the mere presence of the woman some how fixes everything. I've also noticed that he is supposed to be some power house of a guy such as a super busy CEO or ruler of a kingdom but also have so much free time that he is essentially spending just about every waking moment of his day wooing her. As if he has so much wealth that he can check out of his duties for a half year for the sake of romance. Also i've noticed that with many of the female characters they don't really do much of anything but the author tries hard to make them look super hard working and competent. Instead they are more waiting for things to be done to them. They are the objects of romance and not the romancers. My big take away from it all is that its all about making her feel feelings. That was the big core of it all. As silly as some of the stories got, or how lame the man was acting or whatever it is the reader was supposed to believe the one thing that stays constant is that the woman is feeling feelings from it all. And so if you as the guy aren't making her feel feelings then you're for sure failing at romancing.

The way I heard it described once was that women want the most powerful and wild man that they can control. Maybe I'm splitting hairs here but I feel the need to point this out. These things attract and arouse women because of the feeling it gives them. I like romantic elements in stories, but the main story and conflict need to be somewhere else. In my novel the main couple has lots of things trying to pull them apart, though they work hard to stay together anyway. It's not a romance novel, but it does have some of those underlying elements. My fantasies can be hard to pin down, though they would probably pin me down.

When that happens women (and men) start to feel restless and are susceptible to straying from their stale relationship in hopes of finding their spiritual and sexual nirvana part deux.

I have never read a romance novel so I’ve never been one to say that they’re trash because I don’t know. I do have a fascination with the covers though. I have stood in front of racks of romance novels and studied the covers and found that they alone are very revealing. The guys tend to be in three categories: the Cowboy, the Scottish Highlander and the Billionaire. They’re all athletic-looking but not overly muscular and they’re body language towards the woman on the cover is always very dominant. I’ve seen one or two that even touched on an ownership theme. I was shocked once to see a romance novel by the magazine rack in a grocery store entitled, ‘Sold to the Greek Billionaire’ (good-looking, athletic guy wearing a tux on the cover). I laughed at the thought of what some SJW’s would make of the suggestion that, as long as the guy buying you is a hot, Greek billionaire; sex slavery might not be so bad after all! 😆 And yes, Primal Play does get pretty athletic!
