Hi Catherine, Thank you so much for your awesome comment! I don't know any video games...I'm a bit old and missed that trend. I did, however read the Hunger Games and saw all of the movies so I would love to do that series. I'm really into sci-fi and dystopian/ speculative fiction.

Melisandre is one of my favourite characters from GoT. I know these 2 state of minds so well myself. Delusional self-confidence, then investigating the truth while full of doubt, yet so much more humble. What a paradox! Breathtaking costumes. Thank you for showing all of this in detail. I love the soothing background music, too. It fits her mystical character.

Awesome, but i'm also expecting also a series of male's costumes. I mean, Oberyn Martell, Joffrey, Tommen, Tyrion, Jaime... or a mini series about little characters with great costumes like Lysa Arryn, Ellaria Sand, Myrcella Baratheon, Brienne, Ramsay Bolton... Anyways, great job.

They did such a good job with the hexagon symbolism. It’s such a great visual reminder that all these characters are connected by Rhollor. It’s not part of the books at all, but the show was greatly improved by those little details.
@Costume_CO
@Costume_CO 5 жыл бұрын
I'm not aware of that connection. What is it?
@majesticmicrobes60
@majesticmicrobes60 5 жыл бұрын
Costume CO all the priestesses who wear that symbol, also wear red, and it shows the viewers that they’re followers of R’hollor. Rhollor is the lord of light, the deity worshipped in the religion melisandre is a part of. In the books they only wear red, and some of them wear rubies. I think the hexagon symbolism was a nice touch. Quaith, melisandre, kinvara, and the priestess Tyrion encounters, all have it represented in their costumes, and they’re all followers of Rhollor.

As an amateur costume designer, I'm learning so much! I love it. Could you do the costumes for Arya Stark? It'd be great to see her transition from precocious kid to stone cold killer through costume. Also, could you analyse the costumes of Downton Abbey? There are so many amazing pieces that need commenting on. You can start Mary Crawley, arguably the best dressed of the lot, and go from there. Oh! And also the costumes from Netflix's The Crown, the most expensive TV show ever! Also since it shares a costume designer with GoT, could be a nice segue.

Great video(s)! Keep up the good work! Do you think that there's an homage to Kubrick's "The Shining" in Mel's costumes? The iconic hexagon figures (from the hotel carpets), the naked female ghost of room 237 who appears in both young and old/decayed age and the overall psychic/"shining" aspect of the character?

There's a theory/explanation as to why the Lannisters dress very Asian/Japanese like. It might be due to the possibility that the Lannisters were actually inspired by the Targaryens - judging from Viserys' costume, he was old enough to remember Targaryen court fashions when his father and brother were alive. His tunic has a very Japanese kimono like cut, which is completely assymetric throughout, which unlike the Westerlands style which becomes symmetrical after they meet. Perhaps the Asian style and clean lines were to show how alien the Targaryens were to Westeros, emphasizing that they had originally come from Essos. And the Lannisters are just mimicking their style in their own way to show their loyalty - Tywin had served as Hand to the Mad King as well as his household serving in the Mad King's court for years and Cersei was originally going to be wed to Rhaegar, Viserys and Daenerys' brother, before the Mad King's erratic behavior drew the families apart. By wearing fashions similar to the Targaryens, they showed that they fully supported them before Robert's Rebellion began. And the possibility of the Targaryens having a very Asian look could be possibly due to the Valyrian Empire having trade with Yi Ti in the past - it's mentioned in the books - and it's possible that the Yi Tish and Valyrians exchanged knowledge and of course fashion when Valyria was at it's height. And perhaps after the Valyrian empire has fallen, Yi Ti is becoming a dominant force in Essos and quite possibly be inspired the Far East side of Essos with its fashion and culture. I throughly enjoyed this video and all the other videos you've made for Game of Thrones! I can't wait to see the other characters, especially Tyrion and the other male characters (maybe Varys?) in the future! I love your knowledge on the construction of the costumes and all the good tidbits such as embroidery, symbolism and how it all ties together into the look and the character themselves!
@Costume_CO
@Costume_CO 6 жыл бұрын
Awesome comment Tommy. I have seen this theory before, and I did mention in my Melisandre vid that YiTi according to George RR Martin is based upon Imperial China and the look is Han Dynasty. So that begs the questions, how did the Lannisters dress before the Targaryen influence?
@tommyluong6984
@tommyluong6984 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, I'm excited that Yi Ti is inspired heavily by Imperial China and I would love for them to make a spinoff series or seperate series based on Yi Ti! And I think in Season 5, Episode 1, we get a glimpse of what the old Westerlands/Lannisters used to dress like judging from young Cersei and her companion. Her friend, Melara, could be dressing in the old styles of the Lannisters and Cersei could just be recently adopting the Targaryen influenced style.
@Costume_CO
@Costume_CO 6 жыл бұрын
+Tommy Luong Yes, I know that Wikia says that, but I don't entirely agree with their assessment. I looked closely at Malaria's costume and it is Asian inspired as well. It's just that it has a detachable placket on the front. You can check it out in the Costumes of Westeros Part III.

Thank you for another interesting video. In the future I wonder if you could write out the names of items as you're describing them onscreen (for example: the name of that 12th century medieval gown.) Or if you have the time, subtitles would be wonderful as well! I mostly watch your videos for entertainment, but if I want to do some quick research, I realize I am terrible at guessing the spellings of some terms you've used.

Have you considered doing a video about Beyoncé's tour and music video outfits? I know it's not exactly your area of expertise, since is not a TV show or movie, but I think her outfits are something truly worth talking about. I particularly love the outfits from her Mrs. Carter Show World Tour. They evoke the idea of queens throughout History, from Victoria to Nefertiti. The costumes from her latest tour, Formation, as well as the music video of that song have a Southern Belle / 1800s Plantation vibe and they all share the same type of shoulder design. Later on she incorporated African-inspired outfits, including the one she wore at the Grammys that resembles goddess Oshun (also similar to the outfit in the Hold Up music video).

As an accomplished seamstress and a student of the history of clothes and fabrics I can appreciate your references, but I think perhaps alluding to history misses the points a) as this is an act of pure fiction and fantasy and b) we look to the costumes as they evolve in line with each characters' purposes. I do like your detailed explanation of fabrics, embroideries and other construction details.
@Costume_CO
@Costume_CO 7 жыл бұрын
Well, we will have to agree to disagree then. While this is fiction and a fantasy as you point out, George RR Martin has based the World of Ice and Fire series upon the real life events of the Wars of the Roses and the Hundred Years War. And while Clapton herself may have abandoned the books descriptions of costumes, all of them have some source or period that they are drawn from. As far as me explaining the silhouettes and their influences, many of my cosplay viewers appreciate it so I will continue to do so. If you prefer, you may fast forward through those parts so that you won't feel bored.
