After week 1 of the 1977 NFL season, when the Detroit Lions lost to the Chicago Bears, Lions head coach Tommy Hudspeth decided that it would be a good idea to bash his punter, Mitch Hoopes, in the postgame press conference, and pin, quite literally, the entire loss on him. What followed was an absolutely chaotic scene, where the players revolted against their head coach, the head coach had no idea what to do, and Hoopes had some not-so-nice things to say to the man in charge. This is a breakdown of the 1977 Detroit Lions, and the chaos that arose after opening day

I recognized the name Mitch Hoopes immediately; he had a punt blocked in SB 10 that helped change the momentum of the game, giving the Steelers a safety and a free kick.

Hudspeth was wrong to say what he did where he did. That's a conversation you have behind closed doors with your coaches. Cutting Hoopes was the right move, though. He was clearly worse than a replacement player by that point. Doing it after his press conference and later walk back made Hudspeth look like an idiot, but it was clearly the right thing to do.

I looked at Tommy Hudspeth's coaching record, and it's horrible. His time at BYU and UTEP, when he only had two seasons over 500. What's funny is the notable future head coaches that were on Hudspeth's staff with the Lions, Bill Belichick, Joe Bugel, and Jerry Glanville.

He fired Glanville as offensive coordinator after one season because of his run and shoot offense. The Lions seemed to be able to score at will, but the defense couldn't stop anyone. Owner WCF hated the offense. He wanted to see good old smash mouth football, not this fancy throw the ball to everyone kind of play.

Back in 73 Utep lost to Utah 82 6 and Colorado Stae 74 26!!! They didn't win a game all year and got clobbered by ridiculous scores! How Hudspeth landed as a head coach in the NFL is beyond me!! We in El Paso were cracking up!

This unofficial Official Jaguar Gator 9 historian will remind everyone you made videos about the following: 1. Hoopes getting his punt blocked for a safety in Super Bowl 10, continuing the Steelers comeback against the Cowboys that started under unusual circumstances. 2. A fake punt called by the Lions in a game against the Saints in 1988.

Hudspeth was just one in a long line of comically bad Lion coaches. But to be fair, what ended Hoope's pro career was that he wasn't very good at his position.

I never saw Hoopes play, but watching this tape now his body language & his technique (?) are ugly to say the least. You're right on the block. That was inexcusable. Hudspeth sounds like a jerk at the minimum. I was happy to read the other comments about how his college career went. Lol.

Mitch Hoopes is a 3-step punter. From what I've read that was the standard until Ray Guy turned up and started taking only two. It's part of why Hoopes was getting blocked. But geez, you look at the punts in this video and they're barely covering 35-40yds and that can't be because of hang time as the coverage unit haven't reached the returner

Hoopes was no great shakes as a punter, but Hudspeth did himself no favors in the locker room with how he handled that situation. I can understand why Hoopes had nothing nice to say about the Lions' so-called coaching staff and why the Lions ran Hudspeth after that season.

Hudspeth in 1981 would replace Willie Wood ( Prior to his HOF induction) as coach of the Toronto Argonauts after Woods' 0-10 start. Would finish the season for them with 2 Ws and 4Ls one of which was a 61-7 blowout loss to the Warren Moon led Edmonton Eskimos.
