Apparently, Gareth Edwards didn't want to start working on the VFX until they had the final frames and footage that they were actually going to use in the movie, so in the end, it didn't have to cost like $300M for it to look this beautiful. He had a clear vision of what he wanted to make and didn't waste people's time. We really need more of these. 😅

Yup, the VFX work only started after picture lock. A rare almost extinct method of operation in Hollywood.

one great visual aspect that this film doesn’t get enough credit for is that the vfx just blends into the environment perfectly. Robots, architectures, cyborgs etc don’t stick out as vfx but as real elements that support the movie. So many long shots of scenery and atmosphere of different cultures that helps me immerse in the world that the director built, a lot more than other robot movies. It weirdly feels relatable

Hollywood is in a worse spot than it’s ever been. It’s nice to see somewhat original ideas for movies nowadays.
@OrionInSpace

Original ideas get made every year, it just so happens that not all of them get pushed as widely as something like The Creator or Oppenheimer or Barbie. Most of them become festival films or mainly looked at for Oscars but nothing more. I would argue Hollywood has had many spots of being bad in its history, we are just in the modern eras worst spot. Hollywood has always had its rough times.

Somewhat agree but I would like to challenge the idea that originality equals quality - and thus also that unoriginality equals second-rate. I of course love originality and the unpredictability that comes with it but for me, it comes more down to execution than the ideas themselves.

The movie I'm looking forward to most for the remainder of the year is The Holdovers, and I have seen no advertising for it outside of the single preview for it when I went to see Oppenheimer. I can only hope that it left an impression on a lot of people the same way it did for me, but that lack of marketing is not going to do it any favors.

@@Jrzopper Marvel have always been about their superheroes, and stuck to them, and their films worked for what they are. The problem is all other studios trying to constantly replicate something that is tough to do and failing. Marvel isn't asking anyone to make the same type of films. If people supported other movies on the same level as Marvel, both parties would benefit as neither would be oversaturated or empty

Also, fun fact! The movie was shot on a Sony FX3, a 4.000 dollar, super small, mirrorless camera. It also has very good light sensitivity allowing the crew to invest less in lighting in any scene. The way we shoot cinema is changing so rapidly right now!
@NelsonStJames
@NelsonStJames 8 ай бұрын
And of course if an independent shoots with that camera they would be told that it was "non-industry standard". If you're an independent filmmaker odds are you are already in the proccess of shooting cinema. The industry is the one that has to catch up, because it for the most part Hollywood got out of the business of creating cinema a long time ago.
@arnisbrown5848

It's a trip seeing the bucket full of a dozen FX3 with different setups they had on set ready to go at anytime. Although I think the point of why they opted for it budget-wise has been miscommunicated a bit. The cost of even an Arri Alexa (which is most times a rental anyway) is miniscule compared to a total film's budget. It's all of the additional required crew, labor, rigging, etc. that skyrockets with the highest end cinema cameras. Every additional minute on set is money. The FX3 with the DJI RS3 gimbal shoulder rig they used offered a pure solo DP run and gun no setup time required way of shooting. Kind of funny to think that for example Steven Soderbergh's iPhone rig for 'Unsane' probably costed more than the Creator on account of all the rigging and extra lighting they needed.

Everybody says they want original movies and they're tired of reboots, remakes and sequels and when someone puts in the work and does something original this is generally the response at the box-office. Especially if the film is by someone that isn't immediately recognized as a household name. The demographic that actually wants original well-made content is probably a lot smaller than people want to admit; the rest are just hypocrits spouting a line that people just say out of habit, but what they open their wallets for let's you know what they really want.

There are some genuinely powerful and emotionally resonant images in this film. From the beautifully awe inspiring nuclear bomb blast/aftershocks to the simple but equally powerful and effective close up of a smiling childs face. I absolutely love the grainy celluloid-type textured visual look of this film, weathered, varying degrees of focus, imperfections and true realistic depth to the frame. For me it was a very refreshing middle finger to nearly every other blockbuster VFX movie that is prepackaged as this glossy, corporate commercial, with digital makeup covering everything. The Creator does struggle with some pacing and general storytelling issues, huge sections seem rushed through especially in the second half and I've noticed alot of people hung up on this. Basically what Chris Stuckmann is saying here, if more people will support original and unique cinematic storys and enough with the uninspired dull franchise bullshit, than studios MIGHT sense that there's a smart & nuance craving audience who is fed up with MOSTLY everything else in the blockbuster vfx market, not just (or) every comicbook movie, but for the most part we know which one's deserve attention and huge amounts of money and which ones will cause some stir or meaningless internet chatter but then be forgotten within a year or two. We get what we pay for, what we vote for with our time & money, putting the effort into going out to a theatrical experience and supporting the Cinema.

Chris, I saw The Creator yesterday with my GF and we loved it. It was not just that it was a very immersive and believable world that Edwards created. It also wasn't just the cast and the acting which was extremely tangible and emotionally driven. Or the Plot, which was intense and immersive. It was all of that and many more things. The young central actress, Madeleine Yuna Voyles, in her first film role was just perfect and it will be fun to see how she blossoms into her acting career. It was also the first time I noticed how much John David Washington sounds like his father and is definitely going to have an amazing career. The ending had us both tearing up. I also felt like there could have been more time added to the film, with certain scenes feeling like they'd been edited to allow for time constraints.

It's so important that movies like The Creator continue to be financed and exist in the moviegoing marketplace, to break up the homogeny of what's out there. Granted, not being tied to an existing IP doesn't automatically guarantee that something will FEEL original, let alone be a good movie. It can be hard to market things that are technically original properties, but look like combinations of things we've seen before in a way that makes them seem novel. I wasn't super interested in seeing the film at first, but when I became aware of the radically unconventional way it was made, suddenly it became a must-see. It's just amazing that something this technically impressive can be made on such a modest budget. It sounds like the VFX process was also WAY more well thought-out than the average blockbuster. Whatever shortcomings it has narratively, the industry should be taking a big lesson from Edwards here

I saw it on opening night and it was great. To be honest I already anticipated how "tropy" it would turn out to be but I still wanted to give Gareth the support he deserves. Aside from the story elements, the pacing is also not the strongest with this one (I adored his pacing in Godzilla, a slow burn paired with well crafted set pieces). But the visuals and sound design is well worth my money. I haven't had a spine chilling moment in the cinema for a long time but Gareth gifted me one with a scene featuring a certain song...I could feel my organs syncopating with what I was looking at and was utterly impressed.

I saw this on Friday and I really liked it. It definitely did feel a bit rushed in some parts and I think it could have easily been another 20-30 minutes without feeling like a drag. Some movies are better if they tie everything up quickly and others are better if stretched out and allow the story to breathe. It was still very entertaining and it's visually GORGEOUS. The sound design was also damn good as well whether it was 'Nomad' warming up or the pitter patter of little robot feet. This movie looked like a $200M budget movie. I was a bit hesitant on seeing it at first because I don't think the marketing really did much for it, but it exceeded my expectations. SPOILERS AHEAD: Entering the same film festivals as Gareth Edwards here in the UK when I was younger, I have always been invested in his career trajectory which has been monumental. Knowing his special effects background and the budget he had to play with on this film, I was so excited to see what he done. The world building of this film is stunning and the effects slot in seamlessly with the physical action. I loved the way in this film you go into the first 20 mins with the usual thoughts of AI = Bad but throughout the film your thought process is reversed and with the plot aid of a young child you finish the film completely flipped 180 emotionally. That’s a super hard thing to do! I’m surprised more aren’t likening the plot to Rogue One - enemy has a super women, you need to retrieve it before they use it ;) I don’t think Gareth’s intention was to ever reinvent the wheel of Sci Fi but to mere create a supremely polished Sci fi film that hits the right notes and THE CREATOR does this perfectly :)

I think the problem is that the movie dialect is run by people who regularly watch movies, which isn't the majority of the population that actually make up the box office, so you're only hearing from the people who are already helping funding these movies what they think the problem is versus what the actual problem is, and why executives are reluctant to make original films. So from an ordinary viewer's point of view, a guy who just keeps rewatching a small collection of movies and occasionally watches a handful of never before seen movies (not always a new movie) per year, these key components are the reason I believe movies as a whole are kinda dying lately: the inconvenience of paying for the theater, films becoming about the artists and not the audience, and the audience's lack of trust for filmmakers and studios. Prices for everything is going up, so how many people can realistically afford to pay the gas and tickets under an already tight budget? In cases like this, the cheaper alternative will always prevail such as waiting for the movie to come out digitally. Secondly, more and more do I hear artists lashing out at the audience for not liking their film, or that the selling point of a film is the artists involved/the originality of the film instead of the quality and entertainment of the film itself. From what I perceive when filmmakers these days talk about their films, it really seems to be more about the artist, or artists, and filling their desires in the film rather than filling the desires of the audience and what they would like to see. It doesn't seem like these complaints from filmmakers are about studios rejecting ideas that they think audiences would like to see, it instead seems like rejecting ideas that they solely believe is interesting to them. From a product manufacturing point of view, before a product is even made, market research is done to see what is there that people invest in, and what isn't there that people would like to invest in which is what begins the development of a new original product. Again, from what I perceive, it sounds like the filmmakers are making uneducated pitches about movies they believe to be interesting to someone like themselves rather then something they have seen a desire for in the audience that doesn't exist yet. Lastly, I don't believe the people trust filmmakers or studios anymore. The reason I keep rewatching movies instead of watching new movies are because I know what I'm trading in for my time (and sometimes money). With a new movie, there is a risk of a lot of time and money. As mentioned in this video, Barbie was a success, but that's because people knew what to expect with it in terms of themes, and the overall feminist message. But most of the time, these new movies advertise one thing to you, but when you watch the movie, it is completely different in terms of tone, messages, and what you generally expect. Overtime, I have trained my brain to raise red flags over the most general things in these movies' advertising campaigns, including what the artists say outside of the film since my second point outlines that these films are more about them now than the audience, and thus everything regarding their mindset and ideology will be felt in the film. So imagine paying a ticket only to not enjoy the film, maybe because it has a poor screenplay, messages you don't agree with, or a tone you didn't sign up for. It stings a lot more than missing out a movie based on your general red flags, which are then later confirmed by people who have seen it. Studios and filmmakers are getting wise to this sort of thinking, and so I do believe they play a bit of a deceitful game to not scare potential customers away, which to my point, isn't honest. I believe this is why a lot of originality is lacking from Hollywood films and why studios are more easily persuaded to make a film that is a product of other films or IP: because an original film has the baggage I explained in my main three points, but an un-original film has the baggage plus the selling point of familiarity which automatically makes it more appealing. If filmmakers and studios keep messing up these films that essentially have blueprints laid out for them, why would I have any confidence in their ability to make an original film with no prior blueprint good? My suggestion to filmmakers who want to make original films is to pay attention to what these other filmmakers who are allowed to make original films did in order to get to where they are (ironic since they always talk about a filmmakers past, but always chalk up their ability to make original films as luck or out of their ability.) Christopher Nolan, for example, knew WB was looking to make a Batman movie and knew what the audience wanted in terms of tone after the taste of Batman and Robin were still in audience's mouths, so he played the best of both worlds to make his vision come to life. The idea didn't come out of a vacuum of inspiration, it came out of legitimate business reasoning- something that I believe artists today are missing because they feel entitled.

Amazing points, do I have to slightly disagree about the point; "it really seems to be more about the artist, or artists, and filling their desires in the film rather than filling the desires of the audience and what they would like to see" Because lets be honest, algorithms and market testing is something of the 21st century, nowadays everything is trying to be calculated and put into some demographics statistics, how every movie can hit the four-quadrants. I'm sorry but the point is not to give people what they want, but to give people what they didn't know they wanted. No one was reading the public in the 70s and said 'people really want an Aliens film, or Jaws, or Halloween, or Saturday Night Live or Exorcist'. Sure it reflects the society at the time, but movies FIRST are ideas pitched by artists, and then become molded to fit for general audiences and public accessibility. That appeal to audience only comes later in script-doctoring. Movies just don't have the pop-culture impact they do anymore because we have so many other forms of stimulation, we have so much technology at our fingertips, we have our computers and phones and instant gratification on youtube or tiktok or instagram. We have content and algorithmically-specified entertainment, just for us. So original films can never be successful in the same way they used to because everyone now has short-form entertainment that appeals to them specifically, and can be rapidly consumed. Back in the day movies were significant things, because our world was quieter, we weren't constantly stimulated every part of the day with the digital world, so something like Exorcist had a much larger impact because there was less noise to drown it out, now a movie can be good but it's not an event. So whether an original movie is good, unless its spectacle action it can never make that same impact on our over-stimulated brains as with people from time-periods where the movie screen was the only place to get that sort of stimulation. I'm sure you might disagree but you say that as a movie fan, it doesn't apply for general audiences that aren't that invested, and so can find equally exciting things on their phone.

The Creator was so good! Loved it, one of the best movies I have seen in a long time, Gareth Edwards directed an amazing movie, the production, action, music all top notch, felt so fresh, John David Washington stole the show in the movie 👏👏👏

Saw it with my friend in IMAX just yesterday and we both really liked it! The middle sorta dragged a bit but the first and 3rd acts were really captivating and the score was fantastic. The VFX were also some of the most realistic I've seen in a while

I adored this movie! You're so right that it did cobble together bits of other popular movies and stories, but I was still thoroughly entertained. Had some real jaw-dropping moments and edge-of-your-seat action sequences. Plus plenty of emotional payoff, great performances, great visual effects, and great score. I really hope it makes a tonne of money, because I need to see more bigger budget original movies like this!

Well said, subscribed based on your take on this movie and why we need more movies like this. I feel people arent recognizing who pivotal this movie is and what it could mean for future media. I hope it does well.

Wathing 55min long „making of” (included when buying digital or Bluray edition) is a must! One of the best behind the scene I have ever watched - their approach, Gareth attitude and skill, camera they used (the consumer fx3 model that even I have on my shelf), and more…

My wife and I saw it last night and really enjoyed it. I feel like it was a very character driven movie which is not often the case with dystopian sci-fi. Usually the draw is a unique concept and crazy visuals but like you mentioned the plot felt familiar and the visuals (while beautiful) weren't stunning and made to be the main focus of the movie. The relationships of the movie made it so good and well worth watching multiple times.

I enjoyed it! I felt the 3rd act was a bit rushed but the actress that played Alphie as well as John David Washington were fantastic. Its given me a new comedic punchline for everything "we don't have that in the fridge" haha which I loved. I did notice some of the other sci fi influences but it looked beautiful and had great actors. I'm glad they're putting out some original stories :)

I support your take on new ideas and how they are treated. I'm reminded of Jupiter Ascending. It felt like most people were really dedicated to hating everything about that movie. It wasn't the greatest thing I've ever seen, but it WAS interesting. I totally wanted to know more about the world they established. It's commercial and critical failure was surely seen by studios as a message from the public. "If you give new ideas a chance, we will hate it." It's really too bad, because that wasn't even the studios "giving it a chance". They were actively seeking an original IP, and they got burned for it.

This was my most anticipated movie of the year, not only because I wanted to support an original sci fi movie, but also it simply looked more intriguing than every movie this year. And I did not leave disappointed in the slightest, I went in expecting influences and I haven’t seen a lot of the influences of this so that aspect didn’t affect me negatively. I loved everything about this, obviously the visuals were incredible, but I loved the characters and the story as well. Wished certain aspects with Maya and Nirmada were fleshed out more, but I loved the messages throughout and how it ended.

I just came back from the film and there was only one other person in the film. Now this was at 5pm, the perfect time to get off work and watch a film. I was very disappointed that I only had one other guy to share an incredible film with. We got to spread the word on this movie because Chris, we'll get more films like this if we go and see them and spend money on them.

Had high expectations for this movie. But about 2/3rds of the way into the movie, it seemed to not care if certain things made sense anymore. 😞

saw this movie yesterday and it was visually stunning and learning about its budget wowed me even more cuz it felt a higher budget movie. people still dont seem to aware about this movie though, they didnt push it enough and marketing wasnt even that good.(especially in India, not sure about other countries) people need to see more movies like this.
